Broken Oath: I Left, He Regretted-Chapter 179: We’re All Adults—I Know What He Wants
Katherine Sheldon sighed lightly.
Over the years, she had meticulously maintained the image of a virtuous wife and loving mother — gentle and sensible in front of her husband, kind and forgiving in front of her son, never letting on about her ambitions for power and gain.
Earlier, she had made her point clear enough: Timothy Xavier’s downfall was the perfect opportunity for Ethan Xavier to solidify his position.
Yet her son was still caught up in his romantic entanglements.
"Mom, please leave. I want to be alone for a while." Ethan Xavier stood up with his back to Katherine, his voice full of exhaustion.
"So, when do you plan to return to the company?" Katherine was unwilling to give up, adding, "Don’t forget, you are now the president of the Xavier Group. With such a big scandal hitting the company, the stock price plummeting and public opinion against us, it’s unreasonable for you not to help your father handle things."
Ethan Xavier frowned even more deeply, and there was a hint of impatience in his tone: "It’s not the first time the Xavier Group has faced such a crisis, and it’s not the first time Timothy has brought shame on us. Didn’t they handle things well before I was here? Right now, I really have no interest in dealing with anything. Please, just leave!"
Watching her son’s desolate and irritable back, Katherine’s eyes flashed with a trace of helplessness. Ultimately, she said nothing more and gently closed the door.
Although she didn’t press Ethan Xavier, her mind was already made up. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Timothy Xavier’s public wedding fiasco had caused such a mess for the Xavier Group, and it was a great chance for her son to seize the moment and consolidate his standing. She couldn’t let it slip away easily.
...
In the kitchen, Katherine asked the servant, "Is the ginseng soup ready?"
The servant replied respectfully, "Yes, ma’am. It’s just finished. Would you like me to serve it now?"
"No need."
Katherine waved her hand, "Put the ginseng soup in a thermos, have the driver get the car ready, and take me to the Xavier Group."
She intended to use visiting Douglas Xavier as a pretext to find out just how severe the punishment Timothy Xavier faced this time would be.
As the car pulled up in front of the Xavier Group building, she heard a shrill voice shouting at the entrance.
Through the car window, Katherine saw Sophia Kendall in a wrinkled red cheongsam, being blocked by several security guards at the door, losing her composure and yelling, "Let me in! I want to see Douglas Xavier! Get out of my way, you useless dogs!"
The head of security wore a mocking expression, his tone firm: "Former Chairman’s wife, there’s no exception at the Xavier Group. Without an appointment, no one sees the chairman."
"Bah!"
Sophia Kendall was trembling with rage, pointing at the security guard’s nose and cursing, "You bootlicking scum! Was it that old witch Katherine who told you to do this? That whore stole my husband, and her son stole my son’s presidency position. She’ll get what she deserves, one day she’ll be struck by lightning and punished!"
The security head sneered, "President Xavier taking the presidency was anticipated by all. At least he never embarrassed the company by pulling a stunt like fleeing a wedding."
"Shut up!" Sophia Kendall’s eyes were red with fury, "When my son takes back the presidency, you’ll be the first to be fired!"
In the car nearby, Katherine’s lips curled into an imperceptible smile as she discreetly pulled out her phone, recording the entire scene.
She sent it to her personal assistant, along with the message: "Use an anonymous account to post this video online. No need to stir things up, just let the netizens watch."
Having done this, she opened the car door and stepped out gracefully.
Her silk gown shimmered, exuding an air of elegance and nobility, in stark contrast to the crazed and shouting Sophia Kendall; anyone would see Katherine as the more dignified of the two.
"Sophia, what are you doing here?" Katherine asked blandly, as if she had just stumbled upon the scene.
The security head recognized Katherine at once, adopting a respectful demeanor and hurriedly explaining, "Chairman’s lady, we didn’t handle our duty well, I’m sorry for disturbing you. Please don’t hold it against us; we’ll get this crazy woman out of here immediately!"
"No need." Katherine waved her hand, her tone still gentle, "Sophia is just worried about Timothy, which is why she lost her composure. There’s no need to make a fuss, just be careful not to hurt her."
Despite her words, the two guards holding Sophia Kendall’s arms showed no sign of letting go. Instead, they tightened their grip.
"You bitch! Stop pretending!"
Unable to break free, Sophia could only curse at Katherine, "You must be overjoyed now, aren’t you? Did you egg Douglas on to fire our Timothy from the company? Let me tell you, don’t even think about succeeding!"
Katherine’s face showed the perfect amount of surprise, her brow slightly furrowed: "Oh? Timothy is going to be fired? I really had no idea. Sophia, don’t get so worked up, it’s not worth harming your health. How about this, go home and wait, I’ll go in and talk to Douglas, see if there’s anything that can be done."
Without giving Sophia a chance to speak again, Katherine turned and calmly walked into the chairman’s private elevator.
The elevator doors closed slowly, cutting off the noise of the cursing outside.
The gentleness on Katherine’s face faded instantly, her eyes turning cold.
Outside, Sophia Kendall glared fixedly in the direction where Katherine disappeared, her eyes as red as blood.
This Xavier Group, and the position of Chairman’s wife, these were all supposed to belong to her and her son!
But now, Katherine and her son had taken them step by step!
She was unwilling, truly unwilling!
...
In the chairman’s office, Douglas Xavier had just ended a video conference with the shareholders, his face extremely dark.
At that moment, another trending notification popped up on his phone — a video of Sophia Kendall causing a disturbance at the entrance of the Xavier Group, behaving disgracefully.
Douglas was livid; they’d been divorced for years, yet that woman continued to disgrace him.
Right then, Katherine walked in gracefully carrying the thermos.
"Douglas, why do you look so upset?" she approached with light steps, her voice gentle.
Douglas slammed his phone on the desk, pointing at the screen, and said through gritted teeth, "See for yourself! That uncouth woman is embarrassing herself and bringing shame to her son along with her!"
A fleeting smile crossed Katherine’s eyes before she quickly replaced it with a composed expression, gently patting his back: "Don’t let it upset you. Sophia is just worried about Timothy, she lost her cool."
"She’s just stirring up trouble!"
Douglas was furious, his chest heaving violently, "And her son is just as bad! The mess he made of the Xavier Group, it took us so much effort to stabilize the situation and get back on track, and then he pulls a stunt like fleeing the wedding! The way people looked at me at the wedding today, as if I were a joke! I wanted to find a hole to crawl into!"
Katherine said nothing, only opened the thermos and scooped out a bowl of warm ginseng soup, handing it to him.
"Timothy really crossed the line this time, disregarding the company’s reputation, not to mention how hurt Zoe must feel."
She spooned a bit of the soup, offering it to Douglas’ lips, "Here, have a little to warm your stomach. You’ve eaten nothing but breakfast today, if you make yourself sick, who will hold the company together?"
Douglas took a sip of the soup from her hand, his anger subduing slightly.
Suddenly, something came to his mind, and he asked, "By the way, where’s Ethan? The company is in chaos, the PR department is working overtime to handle the crisis, so where is he?"
At those words, Katherine’s eyes flickered with a touch of guilt, but she deftly covered for Ethan: "With everything that happened today, Ethan was overwhelmed by what he read online, so right now he’s reaching out to his network, trying to get all the posts attacking Timothy taken down. I hear he even reached out to Julian Sinclair, planning to sue the most vocal accounts."
Douglas heard her, and let out a deep sigh, filled with sentiment: "You really know how to raise a son! Even though Timothy treated Ethan so poorly, Ethan still cherishes their brotherhood, which is no small feat! But if you ask me, Ethan shouldn’t bother with the punk; he should let the netizens tear him apart so he learns his lesson!"
Katherine lowered her eyes, feeding him the soup, while still carefully observing Douglas’ expression, tentatively speaking: "Mr. Xavier, I know you’re angry right now, but Timothy is still your son. Earlier, I ran into Sophia downstairs, and she mentioned... Timothy was fired from the Xavier Group?"
Douglas paused and sighed deeply, "Fire him? Easier said than done!"
Katherine’s heart sank instantly, feeling a vague sense of disappointment.
She didn’t expect Timothy to stir up so much trouble and still not be kicked out of the company?
Douglas explained, "What he holds in his hands are core clients and resources impacting The Xavier Group’s lifeline. Once he’s fired, several of The Xavier Group’s key projects will immediately collapse! So, you should often remind Ethan to focus more on The Xavier Group’s business. Ignore that good-for-nothing brother, improve his own skills, and hold the important clients and resources in his own hands—that’s what truly matters. Otherwise, how secure could his position as President be?"
Katherine clutched her fingers tightly under her sleeves, her nails almost digging into her palms.
She originally thought Naomi’s appearance would be the straw that breaks Timothy’s back.
Escape from the wedding, backlash from the public, shareholders calling for accountability—each one enough to ruin him beyond redemption.
But in the end, she found out all these events merely skinned him, while the core resources truly supporting Timothy’s foothold in The Xavier Group remained untouched, as unshakeable as Mount Tai.
Katherine took a deep breath to barely suppress the hostility in her eyes, her face still maintaining a gentle appearance.
Afterwards, Douglas occupied himself with dealing with the various problems The Xavier Group faced due to Timothy’s wedding fiasco and had no time to spend with her, so he sent her away.
As soon as Katherine returned to the car, she immediately texted Naomi, "Is it convenient to call now?"
Soon, Naomi called her back, "Ms. Sheldon, what’s up?"
"Are you still with Timothy? How’s the situation?" Katherine went straight to the point, her tone carrying a hint of urgency.
"He’s in the study," Naomi’s voice was calm and unperturbed.
Katherine paused and said, "I heard Timothy is holding the crucial client resources of The Xavier Group. When can you get hold of them?"
Naomi frowned slightly, speaking lightly, "I just returned to his side; such important things can’t be accessed so quickly. I can’t give you a specific time. But if I obtain them, I’ll hand them to you."
These resources are useless to her, but if they could help Ethan to establish a firm footing in The Xavier Group, at least it wouldn’t betray his initial act of saving her from peril.
However, Katherine was particularly dissatisfied, fearing that Naomi might be coaxed by Timothy’s sweet words to forget her original intention.
But for now, Naomi was her only ace to overturn Timothy, so she couldn’t offend her, thus patiently reminding, "Make sure to hurry. Timothy’s foundation in The Xavier Group is too deep; if we don’t take him down now, he’ll quickly bounce back."
"Okay," Naomi responded briefly.
At that moment, the study door suddenly pushed open, and Timothy appeared at the door.
Naomi’s heart sank, quickly covering the panic in her eyes, calmly hanging up the phone.
"Who were you talking to?" Timothy approached, a trace of doubt flashing in his eyes.
Naomi looked up, a subtle smile floating to her lips, "I know a media person, wanted to ask if they could help delete the negative news about you online. I don’t like those people talking about you like that."
Timothy’s heart warmed instantly, gazing deeply at her, saying, "Naomi, I don’t care what others say about me, as long as you don’t think that way, everything I do is worth it."
After speaking, he handed over the documents in his hand, "I just asked the lawyer to draft the divorce agreement; I want to hear your opinion on the custody part."
"Custody?" Naomi raised an eyebrow, her tone carrying a bit of surprise.
Timothy nodded, speaking with concern, "I’m afraid you might mind not having children. If you like, I’ll take Doris’s custody over, and we’ll raise her together; if you don’t like, I’ll leave the custody to Zoe."
Naomi lowered her eyes, her tone flat, "Children are just annexes; having them is not important. Besides, your ex-wife’s child is already so big, I probably won’t be close to her in the future."
Timothy said, "In that case, I won’t take custody. As for the other property distribution, see if there’s anything you want to change."
Naomi inexplicably felt unworthy for Zoe.
Zoe had married Timothy for so many years, hidden marriage and child-bearing, compromising for the whole, yet the outcome was this way.
At divorce, the husband even seeks another woman’s opinion on custody and property distribution, rather than his rightful wife.
Suppressing the anger and disgust in her heart, Naomi looked up, still maintaining an indifferent appearance, "Just do as you see fit. It’s not my place to involve in your and your wife’s matters."
...
Elsewhere.
Until night completely fell, Jenna hadn’t sent Doris and Sharon back, only sending a message, "Gave you and Julian plenty of world for two, enjoy the sweet time!"
There’s nothing like passion and intense emotions behind.
For this absurd wedding, I got up at four in the morning for makeup and styling, went through the runaway drama, and was utterly exhausted.
After a hot shower and a bowl of noodles Julian personally cooked, I had no energy left and collapsed onto the bedroom bed, sleeping deeply.
When I awoke again, the window was a galaxy of stars.
I tiptoed out of the bedroom; the living room only had a warm yellow floor lamp on, soft light enveloping the man on the sofa.
Julian sat there with a laptop on his lap, his fingers flowing smoothly over the keyboard, emitting slight tapping sounds.
The gold-rimmed glasses on his nose made his brows appear more focused and profound, both abstinent and alluring.
I stood quietly not far away, he was too absorbed in his work to notice my presence at all.
I subconsciously eased my breathing, afraid to disturb this tranquility.
I don’t know how long it was before his gentle voice reached my ears, "Seen enough?"
His tone carried a subtle hint of amusement.
I snapped back to reality, my cheeks instantly heating, eyes avoiding him, feeling a little flustered as I looked at him.
Julian chuckled softly, set the laptop aside, and walked toward me.
The warm yellow light fell on him, outlining his broad shoulders and narrow waist.
Approaching, he lightly brushed my slightly disheveled forehead with his hand, the temperature at his fingertips causing a flinch in my heart.
"You’re quite the sleeper," his tone filled with indulgence.
Thinking of sleeping from noon till nightfall, I felt particularly embarrassed, stammering, "Sorry, I was too tired."
The air suddenly fell quiet.
Julian said no more, just looked down at me, his deep and mysterious gaze slowly falling on the collar of my loose sleepwear, carrying an indescribable tenderness.
My heart pounded uncontrollably against my chest, even my breathing became somewhat rapid.
We’re all adults now, of course, I know what he wants to do?
