Building An Empire Starting From The Labor Camp In Exile-Chapter 290: Five days later
Five days later.
Valtor stood at the border wall. He was dressed in his golden armor, but he wore a fur cloak above it so he wouldn’t scare their guests.
His mouth curled as he thought about the word. "Do we really have to treat them as our guest? They want us dead."
Commander Petel grunted. She was also standing atop the wall she was charged to protect. It was a massive thing made of smooth rocks and a special type of stone that glowed with blue light of its own.
It was the biggest, largest wall in the Soryu territory. On the walls are words of power that have been woven into them, keyed to a particular enchanted necklace that hung around Petel’s neck, the true symbol of the eastern army commander.
The enchanted tool could be used to raise the defensive and offensive technique in the wall. The wall was also so thick that it could fit ten houses built side by side.
Rumors have it that one of the ancient clan leaders of the Soryu Clan, one of the few leaders after the founder Soryu himself, built the wall, and he wanted to build it to encircle the whole of the clan’s territory. But the amount of money spent was so expensive he had to stop.
It was said that the wall was put together by knights even higher in rank than the Master Knights, and they were higher not in the Hinterlands but among the High Clans.
Commander Petel gripped the necklace’s enchanted tool as she was reminded yet again of the burden she carried. She never expected to be a commander. It was a dream she couldn’t even try to dream, and yet.
She looked at Valtor. "They want us dead just as we want them dead. To be honest, I want to put some units together and go to the border side just to know what they are planning, but I doubt I’ll see anything."
Valtor shook his head. "You weren’t there during the time of the previous clan leader, right? Time of Thorold. We did some war on the Akatsuki. They came right here and demanded we pull our wall back and give them fertile lands. One thing they are good at is disappearing. They know how to make escape. But they are also strong warriors.
"If this was Thorold, he wouldn’t have allowed them to come here at all."
Commander Petel looked at him sharply. "It seems you are not in support of His Lordship’s order. Do you really not want him as the clan leader?"
Valtor waved his hand. "What does it matter who seats the chair? As long as they put the clan first and pull us into glory. Although Clan Leader Thorold did well, he still managed to destroy everything that he built. He was a warrior, true and true."
"And the new clan leader?" Commander Petel asked. Her eyes were calm as she asked, but if someone were to look deeper into her eyes, then they would have seen how calculating she was.
It could be said that she was now too loyal. And even though Valtor was the Master Knight there, he shivered. After all, he knew how dangerous a commander like her could be, especially when standing on her wall. But still, he spoke his truth as he knew it. "Clan Leader Atrox is a warrior and a politician. He schemes and he rules. I have yet to see the effect that will have on our clan."
Just then, they felt a strong, strange essence coming from the other side. A carriage came into view, slow, rocking from the rocky ground.
The ground after the wall isn’t immediately desert, and it might take half a day’s journey to be finally able to see one.
Valtor grunted. "They even brought a Master Knight? What a way of making themselves known. Let’s see. This young master is an Errant Knight."
The carriage made its way over and almost touched the gate before it stopped. Valtor smiled. "Well. My job begins."
"I doubt you’ll get to do much since he has a Master Knight protecting him already. Anyway, best of luck to that."
Valtor turned around and jumped down from the high wall and hit the ground hard enough for him to sink in. He climbed his way out and the door was thrown open.
His hand itched to bring out his hammer but held himself back. Instead, he waved and bowed. "Welcome to the Soryu Clan, Young Master Svenjar Akatsuki."
The carriage door opened and a woman with long legs and limbs climbed out. Her skin had been baked by the sun, but she was still very beautiful. She dressed in very small clothes that covered little, and her hands were adorned with different gold and multicolored bangles.
She bowed very low in return. "The young master sends his greetings."
Valtor was shocked. This is the Master Knight? Her image did not fit her title...
He stared at the carriage in suspicion that he did his best not to let show on his face. "I am the Overseer of the Capital. As such, Young Master Svenjar will be in my care."
The woman opened her mouth, but before she could say anything, a voice snapped out of the carriage.
"Shut up, you bitch! Hey, Gold Hawk, when do I get to see this Atrox? I heard he’s a very powerful Errant Knight, so much so that the ranking elders have taken notice of him!"
Valtor gritted his teeth so hard sparks nearly flew out. Gold Hawk? Atrox? What disrespect! This little brat!
But it was the woman’s expression—the woman that was a Master Knight—she bowed her head timidly.
Valtor blinked. Just what is going on? He’d never seen a Master Knight submit like her before. It’s an unnatural thing, and it made his blood boil. He wanted to reach into the carriage and snap the boy in two.
Am I really going to have to deal with this guy for how long...
Valtor took a deep breath. "We can start going now, if you don’t mind, Young Master."
His answer was a snort, but the woman nodded. "He has given orders for us to move."
Valtor turned, his expression ugly as he led them towards the flying ships they would be taking.
