Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Can She Dance?

Jace’s POV

"Hey, Tori. How are you?"

"I’m okay, Beta." Tori tilted her head back a bit, the corners of her mouth turning up with a laid-back look in her eyes. "I’ve been relaxing like I was told to."

"It’s a nice day out. Why don’t you be a sweetheart and take Tori for a spin?" Kas bounced in front of me, clutching my arm tightly. "Beta Jace, you know you’re the best brother ever, and I know you can’t say no to me."

"I bet it’s you who is itching to get out and have some fun." I put on a fake frown, my eyebrows scrunching up a little, but deep down I knew it wouldn’t faze her. "All right, but just this one time."

"Awesome! Thanks a million!" Kas’s eyes lit up like fireworks, and she embraced me tightly.

"What do you say we go out for a little jaunt with Kas?" I turned to Tori.

Tori nodded, her hair swaying with the movement.

When Kas saw Tori nod, her eyes sparkled with uncontainable delight. This was the first time Tori had done something other than relax in her room or wander the garden of the compound since arriving.

I spun around and made my way to the garage to grab my car. A short while later, I pulled up smoothly to the front of the pack house and leaned against the vehicle.

Tori came out wearing a simple yet classy outfit, her features hidden behind her hair. Kas was excited, chattering away about how she had carefully picked out and put together Tori’s outfit, beaming with pride.

"You look nice," I said, checking them out with sincere admiration in my eyes. "Both of you."

Kas whipped her head around and flashed a sweet smile at Tori, with a touch of affection. I moved over to the car and opened the doors for Tori and Kas.

Tori murmured a quiet "thanks" and slid into the seat with grace. Kas hopped in right behind her, all bouncy.

"Check it out! The Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster. There are five of these in the world, and Alpha Cayden’s got one." Kas’ eyes lit up like a kid in a candy store, her voice tinged with excitement and pride.

Tori’s eyes widened a smidge, her lips parted just a bit, and her face was filled with astonishment.

"Got a thing for cars?" Kas caught that glimmer of surprise in Tori’s eyes and leaned in a little, asking with genuine interest. "Can you drive?"

"No." Tori nibbled on her lip, a flicker of disappointment crossing her eyes before she composed herself and replied softly, "I mean, who wouldn’t like something beautiful? This car is just drop-dead gorgeous. I remember some rich dude at the diner I worked at talking about it."

"Looks like you know your stuff," Kas said.

I slid into the driver’s seat, grabbed the steering wheel firmly with both hands, tapped the gas gently, and eased the car out onto the road. Whenever I’m driving with other people, I keep the speed in check.

Tori let her eyes flutter shut, a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth as she soaked up the scenery along the road. The super flashy ride turned heads as we rolled through the town, setting off a frenzy of whoops and hollers from all the car enthusiasts.

"Cayden’s at a meeting. He made a point of asking me to take you out and have some fun. And he said if you dig this car, you’re welcome to take it for a spin." I peeked at Tori through the rearview mirror.

"Good lord, Cayden’s really sweet on you. This car’s probably one of his prized possessions." Kas gushed.

Tori pressed her lips together in a little smile. "Beta, do me a favor and thank Cayden for me."

The car rolled to a stop out the front of a clothing store. The manager spots the car through the front window and rushes out to greet us. "Beta Jace... I never thought I’d be lucky enough to see you here."

Kas scooted up close to Tori. "Most of the time, a regular store like this ain’t nearly fancy enough to get a visit from a big shot like Beta Jace."

As soon as we walked through the door, it was like a spotlight hit us. Everybody in the store perked up and their eyes went straight to us.

The store manager hightailed it over with a couple of clerks in tow, grinning from ear to ear, all syrupy sweet. "Hey there, Beta. Good to see you."

Their eyes flitted over Tori and Kas. Since they didn’t know Tori, they just gave her a quick once-over before zoning back in on me.

"All right, here’s the deal. Whatever these ladies want, they’ll get." I paused for a moment, then swiveled my head to look at Tori.

"Sure thing, Beta," the store manager blurted and got the clerks hustling right away.

Even though the clerks had no clue who Tori was, just seeing all the fuss and how I was treating her special, they couldn’t help but show a little envy in their eyes. I mean, there was no way I’d be going all out like this for just any woman if Alpha Cayden hadn’t given the word.

I said to Tori, "Hey, take a look around. If there is anything you like, please don’t hesitate to let the team know, okay?" With a smile, I added, "It’s not every day we get to go shopping like this. So go ahead and grab whatever catches your eye. Don’t worry about saving Alpha’s money."

"Who in the world is this chick? What’s so special about her that Alpha Cayden’s being so nice? Is she gonna be the next Luna or something?"

"Good lord, this is just nuts!"

"I’ll be darned. Who would’ve thought that cold-hearted Alpha Cayden would ever go out of his way to set up something this nice for a woman?"

Kas smiled, clutching Tori’s hands. "All right then! Let’s get to shopping!"

Tori’s lips curled up in a sweet little smile and she gave Kas a small nod. Then she started strolling around the store, checking out the racks of clothing.

Two well-trained salesgirls trailed behind her. Now and then, they’d use their sweet voices to go on and on about the special designs and fabric details of the clothes they were holding Tori just listened quietly, not showing any sign that she wanted to try anything on.

After a while, she leaned in said softly, "Oh, thank you. You’ve been nice to me, and I now have enough clothes. I don’t think I need to buy any more."

She was always so sensible. Kas couldn’t help but grab her arm and whine a little, hoping she’d pick out a few more things.

Tori smiled and shook her head firmly.

I knew in my gut that she didn’t want us to spend money. So, I had no choice but to bring up the Alpha and said, "If we don’t get something, I’m afraid I won’t be able to face him when we get back."

Tori raised her hand and scratched her head, looking a bit torn. In the end, she decided to take the gift from the clerk—two pairs of gloves from a fancy brand, one black and one pink.

She handed me the black gloves. Normally, I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing these, but looking into her sincere eyes, I took them and said, "Thank you, Miss Tori. The pink pair, are you going to keep them for yourself or give them to someone else?" I asked.

"I’m going to keep these for Jess." Tori’s eyes shone with gratitude. Then she turned to Kas and said, "Sorry, Kas. I don’t have any money right now. But when I do, I’ll get you the best gift ever."

She was just that kind and grateful, not having a clue that she had everyone wrapped up in her charm. And she didn’t realize that for a new girl in town, she had already earned a lot of respect.

"I’ll be your friend no matter what, even if you don’t give me a thing." Kas stepped up and gave Tori a hug.

Tori’s face lit up with happiness.

After we left the store, I took Kas and Tori to the amusement park. Tori was starting to loosen up and enjoy herself. I’m glad I had the chance to get her out of the compound.

It was getting late, and we were exhausted. I was about to take them home when Kas grabbed my arm and looked at me with those big, hopeful eyes. "Beta Jace, I want to go to the bonfire with Tori tonight. Please?"

Tori smiled shyly, wringing her hands together. “I think going to a bonfire would be fun, Beta Jace.”

My heart melted. I couldn’t help but think about the awful fate she was about to face—getting killed by Alpha once she had the baby.

I just couldn’t say no. So, I nodded.

When we arrived at the bonfire, it was busy. People were laughing and having a good time. The second Tori walked into the lively scene, with her pretty face and sweet nature, she won over a lot of the pack members.

Soon enough, someone came up with a big smile, handed her a homemade cupcake, and said, "Here, try this cake."

Tori was a bit taken aback, her cheeks a little pink. She reached out and took the cake, voicing her appreciation.

When the music started, Tori walked into the middle of the open space and started dancing. Her moves were light as a feather and as graceful as a swan.

Kas said she must have had some serious dance lessons when she was a kid with the way she was moving.

"Man, this lady can dance!"

"Never seen such a smooth dance. It’s amazing!"

When Tori was done, everyone clapped like crazy. If she had been born into a happy family, with her looks and talent, she could have had a wonderful life instead of being a breeder.

Tori, her cheeks red from dancing and the hair on her forehead sweaty, came up to me, breathing hard and her eyes full of joy. "Beta Jace, I haven’t had this much fun in ages. Thanks!"

I looked at her, feeling all kinds of things. I nodded and said, "Glad you had a good time."

Then Kas came over, grinning from ear to ear, and said to Tori, "You were awesome. If we get another chance, we’re coming back."

Tori nodded, her eyes full of hope. "I would love that."

But deep down, I knew chances like this were going be few and far between.
