Cannon Fodder in an Era Drama — I Survive with Acting-Chapter 27: A Rare Good Girl
"No, that’s not right, Fei Jin. How can you have such low self-esteem? Do you really think you’re not as handsome as they are?"
In her eyes, Fei Jin was much more handsome than the vast majority of movie stars. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
It sometimes made Song Qingya wonder if this world gave special treatment to its male leads.
Luo Fuman and she were in complete agreement on this point.
Luo Fuman slammed his hand on the table and said excitedly, "Exactly! I’m not just talking nonsense, am I? Back when you came to visit me in the hospital, all the young nurses would sneak over just to look at you. You remember that, right?"
"Oh? Did something like that really happen?"
A faint hint of jealousy colored Song Qingya’s tone.
"It seems Mr. Fei is quite popular with the ladies. But I guess that’s not surprising."
"Right, right, right! He’s just that charming! Qingya, you really have a way with words. That’s so much better than how I’d put it!"
Luo Fuman chimed in.
The two of them went back and forth, singing Fei Jin’s praises and lauding him to the skies.
Fei Jin just smiled helplessly, deciding to let them carry on.
The conversation flowed more and more easily.
Later, as the conversation turned to the past, Luo Fuman’s eyes filled with nostalgia.
"Back then, artillery shells rained down like a storm, and I was buried by sand and rubble in an instant. I was lying there, thinking, ’This is it for me.’ I never imagined he’d risk his own life to dig me out of that rubble."
"He finally managed to pull me out and then carried me on his back for over ten kilometers on a rugged mountain path. Can you imagine that? A mountain path! Without a single sip of water. I begged him several times to put me down and leave me behind, but he refused to let go."
"It was at that moment that I suddenly understood. This man was absolutely dependable, someone worth following and fighting alongside until the very end!"
Luo Fuman said, his voice thick with emotion.
Song Qingya rested her cheeks in her hands, listening with rapt attention.
"And then what? What happened after that?"
"After that, we made it to the base. They sent me to the hospital to recover. When I was lying in bed and asked to see him for a chat, they told me he had just recovered himself and had already gone back to the front."
Luo Fuman slowly recounted the experience.
At this point, Luo Fuman turned to look at Song Qingya.
"You know, that quality of his is a double-edged sword. Qingya, you’ll have to watch him more closely from now on. A man who doesn’t know how to look after himself needs someone by his side watching over him to keep him safe."
Hearing this, Song Qingya immediately nodded.
"I will. Don’t worry, Old Luo."
Seeing her response, Luo Fuman let out a visible sigh of relief.
"Good! Hearing you say that puts my mind at ease."
By the end of the night, he was completely drunk, but he still clung to Fei Jin’s hand, praising endlessly, "She’s a real gem, a wonderful girl. You’d better not treat her wrong."
Fei Jin knew Luo Fuman’s character well.
He could tell at a glance that his friend was drunk.
But he still nodded solemnly and made a promise, "I know what to do."
However, even so, Luo Fuman still seemed worried.
Luo Fuman, emboldened by the alcohol, said to Song Qingya, "Qingya, don’t think I’m being a nag. Everything I’ve said today comes straight from the heart."
As he spoke, he gestured a few times in the air with his hand.
"I’m listening to everything you’re saying."
Song Qingya nodded seriously.
She knew that every word Luo Fuman was saying right now was for her own good.
"He’s great in every way, but he’s introverted and doesn’t talk much. Getting a word out of him is like pulling teeth! But don’t hold it against him; he really does care a lot about you."
Luo Fuman’s voice dropped to a lower tone.
"Of course not. Fei Jin is wonderful to me."
Song Qingya smiled gently.
Song Qingya truly felt that way.
Since she’d arrived here, Fei Jin had fulfilled every duty expected of a husband, and he’d done it perfectly.
Song Qingya couldn’t help but feel emotional.
’Actually, I think I’m pretty lucky to have met someone as wonderful as Fei Jin.’
’Otherwise, what if I’d landed in some physically and mentally abusive, heart-wrenching, gut-twisting story? That would have been miserable.’
Song Qingya couldn’t help but feel a secret sense of relief.
’There are so many male leads in these stories who fly into a rage, their eyes turning red at the slightest provocation.’
’A good man like Fei Jin, who could actually talk things out calmly, was a breath of fresh air.’
Fei Jin had been deeply moved every time he heard Song Qingya defend him today.
Hearing Song Qingya’s words, Luo Fuman, who was beside them, was on the verge of tears.
Wiping his eyes, he urged them to continue eating.
"Sigh, you two, hurry up and eat. Don’t let my words ruin your appetite."
Just then, the restaurant’s chef, wearing an apron, walked out of the kitchen with a helpless look on his face. "This old fella, he’s drunk again! You’d better get him home quick. Any later and his wife will chew him out. She definitely won’t let him drink again after this."
"Got it, thanks for the heads-up."
Song Qingya replied cheerfully.
’I didn’t expect him to have such a formidable wife at home,’ she marveled inwardly.
"Let’s go. Do you know where Old Luo’s house is?"
Fei Jin’s voice was gentle.
"Mhm."
Song Qingya nodded lightly.
She had been a guest at Luo Fuman’s house with Fei Jin a few times, so she was fairly familiar with the place.
Fei Jin looked at Song Qingya, a trace of warmth spreading through his heart.
After getting married, he had actually thought about inviting Luo Fuman to their home for a get-together.
But at the time, Song Qingya had been too sick to entertain guests.
So the matter was temporarily put on hold.
Fei Jin asked in a low voice, "Next month, can we invite Old Luo over for dinner?"
"Of course."
Song Qingya answered without hesitation.
She said happily.
"I’ll buy the groceries in advance then!"
Song Qingya was in a particularly good mood.
Today, Fei Jin’s favorability toward her had increased quite a bit, and she had earned a lot of points.
These points could be exchanged for a one-day professional cooking skill boost.
It would be a perfect opportunity to let Old Luo taste her cooking and show off her new skill.
By the time they finally managed to get a completely wasted Old Luo home, it was nearly eleven at night.
The streets were nearly empty.
"It’s so late. Let’s find a place to stay for the night."
Fei Jin suggested.
Although with his status, he could have easily called for a car to pick them up.
But he was the type who didn’t like to trouble others.
On this point, he and Song Qingya were very much alike.
’Back when she was in the entertainment industry, her colleagues all called her an oddball. They would gossip behind her back about how she had an assistant but never used them.’
’She insisted on carrying her own bags and drinks, and they accused her of just trying to cultivate a down-to-earth image.’
’But to Song Qingya, assistants were people too.’
’Why should some young woman who just graduated have to be at her beck and call 24/7?’
’She couldn’t be bothered to argue with them. There was no point when their values were so different.’
But between her and Fei Jin, there was a rare and precious understanding.
’If only they could be this compatible in... other areas, too...’
