Chapter 630: Not A Stone Unturned

Riii— click.

The first ringtone had not even fully rung yet before Li Zhi picked up the handle. "This is Li Zhi speaking, how is it going?"

The whole office was plunged into an eerie silence as everyone collectively held their breaths, all the while stealing glances at their Captain who exuded thick murderous intent. He had been, since the report came in that the Master Manipulator was spotted in the hospital. What made things worse was the audacity of that bastard who walked around with ease amid the officers stationed on the floor, even making contact with Luo Xuan!

Li Zhi’s expression grew darker as he listened to the report on the other side. In the end, he offered no more than a stoic ’I see’ and ’thank you for your hard work’ before concluding the call.

The stifling quiet lingered for two more seconds before Li Zhi slammed his fist on the table, creating a resounding bang that jolted everyone present.

"Do you realize what kind of mistake you have committed this time? Huh?!" He snarled at the ashen-faced officers before him – the same guards who had come into contact with ’Nurse Yu’ at the hospital. The one who received most of Li Zhi’s ire was none other than the policewoman who had conducted a body check on Ku Jin.

"You had fucking one job..." Li Zhi chuckled with simmering anger. "And you couldn’t even get it right! Do you still want to wear your uniform, hmm? How about I send you back to the local bureau for you to do office work. Do you want that?!" 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Despite looking like she was about to burst into tears, the policewoman still tried her best to reply, "Replying to the Captain, this matter is entirely my fault. I didn’t expect him to dress as—"

"Excuses, excuses, I don’t need your goddamn excuses!" Li Zhi kicked the rolling chair beside him in the fit of anger, sending it crashing to the floor. "Do you think your excuses can mend your mistakes? Can they help you to track him down? No! So you’d better keep your mouth shut instead of telling me how you didn’t expect him to crossdress. He’s a master of disguise, for fuck’s sake! In the future, don’t go around boasting you’re part of the Violent Crime Unit if you let the criminal slip right under your nose! Damn it, he’s even in contact with his Boss..."

"Captain!" Another guard stammered, "I–I can swear they didn’t discuss anything specific. I’ve been keeping an eye on them all the time!"

"Are you sure?" Li Zhi sneered. "What about hand signals or eye gestures? Special codes only the two of them could understand? Can you say for certain that they haven’t exchanged information? Huh?!"

Li Zhi continued to unleash his furious tirade until the officers were reduced to trembling, shivering mess, while the female officer finally couldn’t endure the pressure any longer and shed tears quietly, not daring to make a sound for fear of provoking further ire from Li Zhi.

In the corner of the room, the core members of the Violent Crime Unit were munching on melon seeds as they watched over the spectacle. "Tsk, does Captain have to be so harsh?"

"Sigh, this is the main reason why he has and will always be single."

"He has a track record of making newbies cry at least once a month, you know."

"Well, they did mess up with the Master Manipulator. Even I am frustrated to death. But did that bastard really crossdress as a woman?"

"Wait a minute, have you guys forgotten the most important thing? How could XIU make that report when he’s supposed to be with the Prime Minister? Does it mean he—"

The hushed chatter promptly died down when Li Zhi turned to them with an intense glare. "What are you all still doing there? Go to the traffic police, zero in on the last location where the Manipulator’s car was seen, and analyze his potential routes! Even if you have to sample every tire mark on the ground, you still have to find his car! NOW!"

The gossiping officers immediately scampered away like headless chicken.

Li Zhi dismissed the guards he had scolded with a frustrated wave of his hand, "Go! Go back to your posts and wait for your punishment!" Then he looked around the office and barked out, "Where is Officer Mu?!"

"Here," Mu Yuze stepped into the office, his damp bangs clinging to his forehead. The rims of his eyes were still a little red, and the corner of his mouth bruised. But fortunately Li Zhi was too enraged to notice the tiny details. "What do you need me to do, Captain?"

"Ha..." Li Zhi ran his hair through his hair, cursing, "That bastard XIU is playing with us, isn’t he? He just happened to see the Manipulator when he went to the hospital? Bullshit, like I would believe in that coincidence! Head to the hospital and retrieve the surveillance footage. I want to know why he was there and who he met. Do not leave a single stone unturned, do you hear me?"

Mu Yuze nodded resolutely, "Yes, Sir."

Li Zhi swept his gaze over the office and from behind the partition screen, a thin and pale arm stretched out, imploring, "Captain, please let me go with Mu Yuze!"

Sighing, Li Zhi waved his hand. "The two of you, just go!"

Kang Guanyu did a little dance before hurrying to catch up with Mu Yuze, who had already walked away.

Meanwhile, Li Zhi directed his next set of orders, this time to Chen Lian. "Contact the Prime Minister and politely tell her to fuck off. If she still insists on hiding XIU, then don’t blame me for issuing an arrest warrant. Even if it’s midnight, XIU has to come here to give his statement! What does he think this place is, a fucking café he can stroll in and out as he pleases?!"
