Cards Of The Silent King-Chapter 54: NYX and the Dark Between
The alley did not exist on any map. Kaito stood at the entrance. It was between two buildings in the Grey District. The buildings were close. Too close. There should not have been space for a path. But there was. The air inside was still. It was colder than the street. The light from the sun did not reach the ground. It faded halfway down the wall. Kaito stepped inside. His shoes made no sound. The dust did not rise.
Kuro said: "This place is wrong."
Kaito said: "I know."
Kuro said: "It is not a crack. It is a gap. A space that was forgotten."
Kaito walked deeper. The shadows grew thicker. They were not cast by objects. They existed on their own. They moved like liquid. Kaito stopped at the end of the alley. There was no wall. There was only darkness. A figure stood in the dark. She was tall. She was made of void. Her edges blurred into the background. Her eyes were stars. They were small and white. They did not blink.
Kaito said: "Who are you."
The figure did not move. Her voice came from everywhere. It was soft. It was absolute.
NYX said: "I am the space between."
Kaito said: "You are an entity."
NYX said: "I am the pause. I am the breath held. I am the end of the line."
Kaito reached into his jacket. His hand hovered over the cards. He did not draw one. He waited.
Kuro said: "Do not engage. She is not like the others. She is older."
Kaito said: "I need to know."
Kuro said: "Knowing might unmake you."
Kaito ignored him. He looked at NYX. She drifted closer. She did not walk. She flowed. The darkness around her parted.
NYX said: "You carry light."
Kaito said: "I carry cards."
NYX said: "They are light. Trapped light. Bound light."
Kaito said: "They are allies."
NYX said: "They are prisoners. Some chose it. Some did not."
Kaito thought about Atlas. He thought about Kuro. They chose. But others were defeated. They were sealed. It was the way of the deck.
Kaito said: "Will you join me."
NYX said: "Why should I."
Kaito said: "The city is dying."
NYX said: "Cities die. Worlds die. Darkness remains."
Kaito said: "I want to stop it."
NYX said: "You want to delay it. There is a difference."
Kaito stepped forward. The cold did not touch him. The darkness did not hide him. She saw everything.
Kaito said: "I offer a contract."
NYX said: "I do not need contracts. I am already here."
Kaito said: "Then leave."
NYX said: "I cannot. This place is mine. But I am bored."
Kaito said: "Of what."
NYX said: "Waiting. The end always comes. I wait for it. You fight it. That is interesting."
Kaito said: "Fight with me."
NYX said: "If I do, you owe me."
Kaito said: "What do you want."
NYX said: "I do not know yet. When I know, you will give it."
Kaito said: "That is dangerous."
NYX said: "Everything is dangerous. You walk on a planet that spins through void. You breathe air that can choke you. You trust flesh that can betray you."
Kaito said: "I trust my friends."
NYX said: "For now."
Kaito did not argue. He knew the risk. He knew the cost. But he needed power. Vortelius was coming. Seraphine was watching. The Architect was planning. He could not fight them with only light. He needed the dark.
Kaito said: "Agreed."
NYX said: "Then take me."
She stepped toward him. She did not become light. She became ink. She flowed into his hand. She did not go into a card. She became one. A card appeared in his grip. It was black. It had no image. It had no suit. It had only a name printed in silver. NYX. The rank was Legendary. Kaito felt the weight. It was not heavy. It was empty. It felt like holding a hole in the world.
Kuro said: "You have bound the void."
Kaito said: "She bound herself."
Kuro said: "She said she wants something."
Kaito said: "I know."
Kuro said: "It will be expensive."
Kaito said: "Everything is."
Kaito put the card in his deck. It settled between Atlas and Kuro. It did not hum. It did not vibrate. It was silent. It was perfect. He turned away from the alley. The entrance was gone. The two buildings were touching. There was no space between them. The gap had closed. Kaito walked back to the street. The sun was setting. The shadows were long. They looked different now. They looked deeper.
Kuro said: "She is watching."
Kaito said: "Who."
Kuro said: "NYX. She is in the card. But she is also in the shadows. She is everywhere."
Kaito said: "Let her watch."
Kuro said: "You are playing with things you do not understand."
Kaito said: "I understand enough."
Kaito reached the main road. People were walking home. They looked tired. They looked human. They did not know about the alley. They did not know about the void. Kaito thought: She is a weapon. She was also a mystery. She was also a risk. But she was his. For now. He touched his pocket. The card was there. It was cold. It did not warm up like Ember. It did not weigh down like Atlas. It was nothing. Kaito thought: Nothing is useful. Nothing could hide him. Nothing could swallow an attack. Nothing could end a fight. He walked toward his apartment. The streets were quiet. The Grey District was sleeping. The cracks were sealed. For tonight.
Kuro said: "Jin is waiting."
Kaito said: "Where."
Kuro said: "The corner. Near your building."
Kaito looked. Jin stood under the streetlight. He was not moving. He was watching the road. He saw Kaito. He did not wave. He just nodded. Kaito walked to him. He stopped beside him.
Jin said: "You were gone long."
Kaito said: "I was working."
Jin said: "Did you find what you needed."
Kaito said: "Yes."
Jin said: "Was it dangerous."
Kaito said: "Yes."
Jin said: "Will you do it again."
Kaito said: "If I have to."
Jin nodded. He handed Kaito a bottle of water. It was cold. Condensation dripped down the side.
Jin said: "Drink."
Kaito took it. He opened the cap. He drank. The water was clean. It tasted like plastic and minerals. It tasted like reality.
Kaito said: "Thanks."
Jin said: "Tomorrow."
Kaito said: "Tomorrow."
Jin said: "Same time."
Kaito said: "Okay."
Jin turned away. He walked down the street. He did not look back. He knew Kaito was safe. For now. Kaito watched him go. He finished the water. He crushed the bottle. He put it in his pocket. He would throw it away later.
Kuro said: "He is loyal."
Kaito said: "Yes."
Kuro said: "It will be hard when he knows everything."
Kaito said: "He knows enough."
Kuro said: "Not about her. Not about NYX."
Kaito said: "He does not need to."
Kuro said: "Secrets break bonds."
Kaito said: "Truth breaks them faster."
Kaito climbed the stairs. He reached his floor. He stopped at the second landing. The step was empty. Hana was not there. He felt the absence. It was not pain. It was notice. He noted it. He moved on. He unlocked his door. He stepped inside. The room was dark. He did not turn on the light. He walked to the desk. He placed the new card on the wood. It blended with the shadows. It was hard to see.
Kaito said: "Come out."
NYX said: "I am out."
Her voice was in the room. It was in the corners. It was in the silence.
Kaito said: "Show yourself."
NYX said: "You are looking at me."
Kaito looked around. The shadows were deeper. The corners were darker. She was the room. She was the night.
Kaito said: "Stay in the card."
NYX said: "I am everywhere. The card is just a door."
Kaito said: "Close the door."
NYX said: "When I choose."
Kaito sat down. He opened the notebook. He turned to a fresh page.
He wrote: NYX. Legendary. Darkness.
He wrote: Terms: Unspecified.
He wrote: Risk: High.
He stopped. He looked at the pen. He put it down. He leaned back. He closed his eyes.
Kuro said: "You have a god in your pocket."
Kaito said: "She is not a god."
Kuro said: "She is close."
Kaito said: "She is a tool."
Kuro said: "Tools do not make deals."
Kaito said: "She did."
Kuro said: "Be careful."
Kaito said: "I am always careful."
Kuro said: "Not with her."
Kaito did not answer. He knew the risk. He knew the power. He knew the cost. He stood up. He walked to the bed. He lay down. He kept his jacket on. He kept the cards near. The room was dark. The shadows moved. They were alive.
Kaito said: "Goodnight."
NYX said: "There is no night. Only dark."
Kaito said: "Sleep."
NYX said: "I do not sleep. I wait."
Kaito closed his eyes. He did not dream. He drifted. He floated in the space between waking and sleeping. The night passed. The sun rose. The shadows retreated. Kaito woke up. He sat up. He stretched. His body was stiff. He looked at the desk. The card was there. It was black. It was silent. He picked it up. He put it in his deck. He checked the count. Fifteen cards. One was void. He stood up. He washed his face. He looked in the mirror. His eyes were dark. They were tired. He put on his jacket. He checked the pockets. The cards were secure. He opened the door. He stepped into the hallway. The building was quiet. He walked down the stairs. He passed the second floor. The step was empty. He walked out into the morning. The sun was bright. The shadows were short. Jin was waiting at the corner. He was looking at his watch. He looked up.
Jin said: "You are late."
Kaito said: "Five minutes."
Jin said: "I counted."
Kaito said: "Let’s go."
They walked together. The city was waking up. The hunger was sleeping. The void was waiting. Kaito touched his pocket. The card was there. He was ready. The day began.
