Carrying a Jurassic on me-Chapter 1328 - 647 - New Year Trivia_2
Chapter 1328: 647 Chapter New Year Trivia_2
In fact, there were rumors that the head of the Public Security Bureau in a western county had once declared, "If someone catches a thief and beats him to death, I’ll take the blame and ensure no one pursues it."
As to whether it was true or false... everyone who heard it believed it to be true. That’s because the director who said this was a local, not to mention his ancestors were well-known figures during the warlord era, even mentioned in history textbooks.
For ordinary folks, hearing about someone embezzling a certain amount of money felt quite distant from their lives. What really mattered to them were the local ruffians, petty thieves, and village bullies.
Just like last year’s World Cup, many people in the city cared about it, right? But people in the countryside thought it was just a bunch of cowards, who acted tough behind closed doors but were pushovers outside. The term they used was "domestic tyrants" typically referring to those who were inept outside but were harsh with their wives and kids at home...
Rather than worrying about that, it would be better to worry about whether a few high-educated teachers could come to our schools next year. Or even caring about those girls who had previously won ’five consecutive championships,’ would be better than caring about a bunch of wimps, right? At least it was all good news, and everyone enjoyed chatting about it, feeling content.
In essence, nowadays people in the villages are merely earning their living through small businesses like selling vegetables, rarely bothering themselves with other grand concerns—it’s like nibbling on radishes and leisurely worrying about trivial things.
Anyway, the thief incident before the New Year was now in the past.
Yan Fei was eating his meal and started making plans again, "Brother Hui, come over after the New Year, and when you have time, start setting up our small library. Let Xiao Pu and Gangzi help you. Spend wherever necessary and make a proper reading room for the place. If we have more books in the future, we’ll open it up to the village for anyone who wants to learn and read."
Zhang Hui nodded, "No problem, it probably won’t cost much. I’ve thought about it. After the New Year, I’ll scrounge around the Agricultural Technology Station; I’ve got a fair amount in my place too, including textbooks from when Xiao Pu and Gangzi were in school. We could put all that in our library. We should have quite a bit with all bits and pieces gathered!"
Originally, everyone was supposed to go home for the New Year, but the cattle farm couldn’t be left unattended, so most people didn’t go. Zhang Hui and two of the veterinarians arranged it so that the three of them would take turns going home, ensuring that someone was always there just in case.
The New Year was important, but considering the gold coins they got from the farm before the New Year, spending less time at home wasn’t too big of an issue. Zhao Pu and Liu Gang, both from rural backgrounds, graduated in the same year. Because they couldn’t be placed in jobs, except for a small number whose ’families had ways,’ the majority ended up wrapping up their belongings and going off to work.
For these two, to reach their current positions and show off a bit when they went home, the entire village would be envious, probably turning some eyes red. So, working a bit harder and busier was not a big deal at all—many would love to take their places.
The small library mentioned by Yan Fei, and the library talked about by Zhang Hui, was actually just a plan to set up a reading room on the farm. All the materials Yan Fei collected and the books everyone had found would be put there for everyone to access.
Most of the materials were technical, which was good for those on the farm to read more often.
Mainly, it was because the originally planned dried meat factory was canceled, and the buildings stood empty. Yan Fei simply decided to convert it into an activity center for the farm. Eventually, we would set up some ping pong tables and a couple of basketball hoops to foster corporate culture!
Although it likely wasn’t necessary—as if anyone had the time, they’d probably prefer to just lend a hand. Everyone was young, and they all had some sort of ’swordsman dream!’ Besides, everyone was used to practicing martial arts together in their free time, so developing an interest in ping pong might take a while.
"Some expenses are worth it, we can afford that bit of money," Yan Fei said with a smile, noticing Zhang Hui’s relaxed demeanor.
Zhang Hui laughed, "It really won’t cost much. Just let me handle it under the farm’s name when finding the books, it’s very easy. For instance, those magazines and books on veterinary science are abundant at the Agricultural Technology Station, hardly anyone reads them. Our veterinary station has plenty, too. I’ll look for some at the old station master’s place; he’d be happy to let everyone read those books. A lot of them were forcibly sent down from above and have been feeding mice!"
"That’s fine, I’m leaving the task to you to handle it," Yan Fei said, realizing it was basically making use of what would otherwise be waste. "Brother Fa, how are things on your side? Is Chen Liqiang coming over?"
"Could he not come over?" Pang Fa replied. "If he didn’t, I’d cut off his supplies. If he came, he’d still have his clients; if he didn’t, wouldn’t he be a fool? Besides, he wouldn’t know when he might get a promotion at the pharmaceutical factory, maybe not till the cows come home, while here we’d let him manage a big chunk of work, at least he’d be a leader, right?"
Yan Fei nodded, "That’s fine. We’ll talk about it if there are any problems that can’t be solved; anyway, it’s not far."
Pang Fa jumped into the conversation, "Actually, there is one thing – about the car. I was thinking we shouldn’t bother getting a sedan. Everyone knows the situation at the station; as a minor factory head, there’s no need for me to show off. We might as well get a van, something convenient to drive and not heartbreaking if it gets dented or scratched. We need to add a few vehicles to the station anyway, why don’t we handle this together after the New Year?"
"Do we really need to save that little bit of money?" Yan Fei countered.
"It’s not about saving money; if I really wanted to show off, I’d drive your Mercedes-Benz back home. The key point is that it’s unnecessary," Pang Fa explained.
"Well..." Yan Fei hesitated for a moment. "Let’s still get a small car, just a cheaper one. And the station’s purchase of vans shouldn’t be delayed. After the New Year, let Heizi handle it with you and buy two vans as well."
After finishing, he looked towards Yan Wenhai, "Mom and Dad, why don’t you both get a car, too? It would make going to and from work more convenient, especially on windy and rainy days."
Yan Wenhai shook his head repeatedly, "No need, no need, what do I need a car for? The big leaders at the station drive official cars and even the minor leaders don’t have their own cars!"
"They are they, and we are us," Yan Fei glanced at Lin Xiumei’s expression and made up his mind. "Later, you and mom go with Brother Fa, and pick any car you like and buy one. Never mind the big or minor leaders; our money is earned legitimately, right, Mom?"
"Exactly, exactly!" Lin Xiumei supported her son. "It’s a car our son gifts us, who can criticize that? But... maybe we should just forget it. Owning a car means buying gas, and if it breaks down, repairs cost money. It’s such a waste!" freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"With your son here, are you still worried about affording gas?" Yan Fei gloated, pandering to his mom. "Just relax, mom. Later, let dad drive you to work and pick you up afterwards. Anyone who sees it will surely say, ’Look how filial their son is, even buys a new car for his parents to use.’ Tell me, wouldn’t that also give me a lot of face at home?"
"That’s... true," Lin Xiumei’s eyes squinted with joy at the thought, not knowing quite what to say.
"Think about it, if I were this rich, and you were still cycling to work every day. People might criticize me, saying I drive a Mercedes Benz worth hundreds of thousands, while my parents still cycle to work; what an unfilial son!" Yan Fei continued to stir the pot. "But if we buy you a car, no one could say a word, right?"
"Yes, yes, yes!" Lin Xiumei’s heart was already moved, sweet talk from her son only made her happier.
"Ah..." Yan Wenhai, as the head of the family, seeing the looks on his wife and son, opened his mouth but eventually just bowed his head and focused on eating.
However, Yan Chao, who had followed the conversation, was very excited, "Dad, are you going to drive me to school then?"
Yan Wenhai muttered, "For that short distance, do we really need to drive?"
Lin Xiumei immediately felt displeased, "What’s wrong? Our son talks about buying us a car and you seem unhappy. People would envy having such a son, and you’re still not satisfied..."
Yan Fei chuckled heartily.
