Chapter 142: Chapter 18 Half a Cucumber_1

(Nothing much to say, begging for subscriptions, begging for monthly tickets, continuing to update with blood!)

Sometimes luck comes and there’s no stopping it.

As soon as Yan Fei took his stance, not even having finished a set of boxing moves, a grey shadow suddenly sprang out from behind a small slope.

This was luck. He had spent quite a bit of time catching two wild rabbits at night, but now, when he wasn’t even trying to catch wild rabbits, one had offered itself up to him.

While it would take an average person a moment to react and identify what it was, Yan Fei, for whom catching wild rabbits had become second nature, didn’t have to think twice and started chasing it immediately.

The rabbit danced around in the woods, not gaining speed. Yan Fei, moving faster than it, leapt and hopped closely behind it, giving it no chance to escape.

As he chased it, he felt frustrated. If he weren’t being followed, he could have easily turned into Rapator and caught the rabbit much quicker.

While Yan Fei was unsatisfied, the cop behind him was beyond frustrated, almost feeling dizzy.

It was impossible to ride a bicycle in the woods, so after trying to push it and run for a bit, he simply dumped the bicycle and began to chase on foot. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a physical powerhouse. He had been busy all day and was even working overtime at night to review files.

Upon reviewing the files, his senior colleagues believed even more that Yan Fei was a suspect, so he volunteered to tail Yan Fei.

His senior colleagues had tried to persuade him that there was no need for surveillance, but they just needed to watch him from afar. However, the junior officer felt that he had to be clear about the situation. What’s more, there was talk of Laosan offering a reward to find the offender, which was already a big deal.

And so, he was here, hiding in a discreet place.

However, the night was quiet. The mosquitoes were out, buzzing around, providing him with constant companionship, enough to keep him from falling asleep.

He did not expect to gain anything, but then he noticed Yan Fei leaving his house.

When he saw that, he was overjoyed, feeling that his efforts had finally paid off.

Who would have guessed that Yan Fei was just coming here for his morning workout?

The rookie cop was now frustrated beyond belief.

All rookie officers hope to resolve significant cases; they hate idleness. He thought he was close to uncovering the truth, only to find that Yan Fei was just here for a workout.

Okay, so he had confirmed that Yan Fei practiced kung fu, but what use was that? There were plenty of people practicing kung fu these days, and Yan Fei was just one of them.

Because of the distance, he didn’t notice the fleeting shadow of a wild rabbit. He just saw Yan Fei suddenly take off and reflexively thought that something big was about to happen.

But there was no discovery, and he was left breathlessly chasing after Yan Fei, and eventually losing sight of him.

Dispirited, he dragged himself over to his bicycle and collapsed onto the grass. His mind was a blur.

As he was considering his next move, he heard rustling behind him.

Turning around, he immediately saw the man he had been tailing by the dim early morning light.

Yan Fei was holding a rabbit, still kicking, in one hand, and a cucumber in the other, munching away contentedly as he hummed a tune.

"So you’re also up early for a workout? However, you’re late. If you had come earlier, I might have split this rabbit with you." Yan Fei, having unexpectedly caught a wild rabbit, was in high spirits. He was munching on a cucumber that he had helped himself to from somebody’s vegetable garden, smiling as he greeted the young cop.

"Yeah, yeah..." The young officer was awfully frustrated, so much so that he wished he could snatch the cucumber from Yan Fei and gobble it down himself. Although the temperature had dropped at night, he was soaked in sweat from dealing with the commotion all night long. He too, was thirsty!

"We should split when we meet, I can’t split the hare with you, so let’s split the cucumber!" Yan Fei spoke while clamping the cucumber with his mouth, snapped the latter half off with a crunch, and handed the piece in his hand over.

The young officer was reluctant to take it, but his thirst from the sleepless night was unbearable. He no longer cared where the cucumber came from, simply said "Thank you," and started eating without hesitation.

Yan Fei swallowed the cucumber in his mouth, said goodbye to him, and carried the rabbit home. The young officer sat on the ground, gnawing on half a cucumber, and experienced the bitterness of a poor meal.

Well, it wasn’t exactly bitter. At least he had discovered how refreshing cucumbers could be.

Yan Fei had no idea about the perplexed feelings of the young officer left behind. All he knew was that he was quite happy.

After such an episode, he felt much better about killing for the first time, holding the wild hare and strolling home confidently.

Lin Xiumei and Yan Wenhai, since Yan Fei left, hadn’t been able to sleep, discussing Yan Fei’s situation in bed. Actually, they were already talking about it half the night after Yan Chao fell asleep yesterday. Nonetheless, they still couldn’t make a decision and ended up getting up early in the morning.

Only Yan Fei could leave his parents in such a predicament. If he were a few years older, this would hardly be a problem, but rather a good thing. But he was too young, leaving his parents at a loss.

Not long after the couple woke up, Yan Fei returned, holding a wild hare. Seeing this, Lin Xiumei immediately praised their son to the heavens.

Yan Fei had already been feeling awkward enough on his journey home.

The estate was already bustling with people early in the morning. Although Yan Fei didn’t visit often, he was still a familiar face. When they saw him carrying a rabbit, they asked where he bought it. Hearing that he caught it while exercising, each praised him.

Now, hearing his mother starting to compliment him again, Yan Fei hastily grabbed a kitchen knife and stepped out, intending to find a quiet place to slaughter the creature.

"Come, let me see. This rabbit is so fat, it’s not pregnant, is it?" Yanfei’s father stopped Yan Fei from leaving.

Yan Fei was at a loss for words: "Dad, this rabbit is a male."

His mother burst into laughter, dropping the vegetables she was picking through. Yan Wenhai’s face turned red as he cursed silently to himself. The boy could have at least been considerate of his old man’s dignity! To save face, he managed a weak laugh, "Oh, it’s a male, huh? I must’ve been mistaken. It’s rare to see such a chubby one. Give it here, I’ll take care of it!"

As he spoke, he reached out to grab the rabbit. The rabbit, which Yan Fei carried back by its ears, sprang erratically, nearly scratching Yanfei’s father.

"Are you sure you know how to do this?" Yan Fei doubted him.

Not only him, even Yanfei’s mom was skeptical: "Have you ever handled this before? Yan Fei would be better at it!"

Yanfei’s father was instantly wounded, deeply! He was provoked by his son and wife, but he stubbornly stood his ground: "It’s a small thing, anyone can skin it. Hand it over!"

Yan Fei only had the option to hand it over, and then watched as he carried the rabbit out the door. Faintly, he heard his father chatting with the neighbors, "My son went out for exercise this morning and caught a rabbit. I’ll go take care of it."

Yan Fei and his mom exchanged glances.

It was his mom who understood him, she said to Yan Fei, "You better go and watch, don’t let him let the rabbit run away."

Yan Fei nodded and quickly followed.

With his eyes wide open, Yan Fei watched as his father carried the wild rabbit to the edge of a ditch, holding the kitchen knife and making motions without actually doing anything. The wild rabbit struggled even more, and seemed to be on the verge of escaping.

Don’t assume it’s easy to hold by the ears, wild rabbit’s fur is quite slippery, plus the shape of the ears makes it not so easy to grasp.

Yan Fei quickly stepped forward and grabbed the rabbit, saying, "I’ll do it!"

Yanfei’s father felt embarrassed to insist further. Few of the early risers nearby had anything to do, and greeted him, intending to watch him kill the rabbit! But he didn’t even know where to make the first cut, persisting further would be too embarrassing.
