Chapter 117: Chapter 115: Do You Have to See Me Die?

"He’s very mysterious and rarely shows up at the hospital, so no one knows who he is. Plus, their hospital management is incredibly strict. It’s impossible to dig up any information!"

Sean Donovan frowned as he spoke. A while back, that president had treated Joy. He had asked Anna who the president was and what his name was, but she seemed very reluctant to talk about him. She just said he was a nice person but that she didn’t know his name. Since he couldn’t get anything out of her, he had to give up.

Charles Donovan mulled it over for a moment.

"Let’s do this. First, schedule a meeting with the president of Mercy Hospital in my name. We’ll see how he reacts. It would be best if we can negotiate a deal. If not, we’ll figure something else out!"

"Okay!"

Sean Donovan agreed. Charles Donovan pushed himself up with his cane, ready to leave. Sean moved to support him. At the door, Charles stopped and gave him another grave look.

"About you and that girl... no matter how big of a scene you make, I will not approve. You know better than anyone what your motives were at the beginning! Also, the Donovan Group is in crisis right now. You had better find me a woman who can help the company through a marriage alliance!"

After saying his piece, Charles Donovan left, leaning on his cane without a backward glance. Sean Donovan shouted desperately after him.

"Grandfather—!"

But Charles Donovan ignored him. The despair in Sean Donovan’s eyes turned to defiance. Finally, he clenched his fists and turned back toward his office.

’What I love, I will obtain and protect at all costs.’

Naomi Shaw was shocked when she heard the news that Mercy was trying to acquire the Donovan Group. For the past few years, Mercy had been competing with the Donovan Group. The Donovan Group originally had the strength to contend with Mercy, but Mercy’s deep pockets and strong financial backing gradually put them at a disadvantage. Now that Mercy was moving to acquire them, the Donovan Group was powerless to resist. This hospital was the century-old foundation of Sean Donovan’s family. ’How devastated would he be if it were acquired just like that?’

Others didn’t know who the president of Mercy Hospital was, but she knew perfectly well. It was just that when Sean Donovan had asked her about it before, she hadn’t wanted to mention the man at all because of how things were with Julian Donovan at the time, so she didn’t tell him.

She immediately called Julian Donovan and questioned him angrily.

"Julian Donovan, why are you being so aggressive?"

’No wonder he had threatened her more than once before, telling her not to force his hand, not to blame him for being ruthless. So this is what he meant.’

In contrast to her fury, his tone was very relaxed.

"What? Does it hurt you to see your sweetheart in a difficult position? Then come back to me. If you come back to me, I’ll let him go, and I’ll let the Donovan Group go!"

Julian Donovan’s acquisition of the Donovan Group was always going to happen, sooner or later. From the moment Charles Donovan forced him to give up his inheritance rights, he had sworn to make everything that belonged to the Donovan Group his. This time, Sean Donovan publicly announcing his relationship with her had infuriated him, so he immediately issued the notice. Acquiring the Donovan Group was about winning back his dignity, and also about taking back his woman.

Naomi Shaw was so angry she was trembling.

"I never thought you could be so despicable!"

Julian Donovan didn’t get angry at her choice of words.

"I’ll say it again: as long as you come back to me, I will let them go. Don’t say I’m not giving you a chance to save the Donovan Group!"

Julian Donovan hung up right after he finished speaking. ’Knowing her personality, she’ll probably sacrifice herself. Heh. Call him despicable, call him shameless, he didn’t care. All he wanted was for her to come back to him. Nothing else mattered.’

Just as he hung up on her, the desk phone in his office rang. It was a call from his fiery little assistant, Reina Draper.

"President, Donovan Hospital is on the line. They say Charles Donovan would like to schedule a meeting with you."

"Charles Donovan?"

A wide, cheerful smile spread across his face. He tossed his entire body back into his large chair, propping his long legs up on the windowsill railing. Leaning there and gazing up at the blue sky outside, he answered lazily, "Sure. Go ahead and set a time to meet with them!"

"Should I have him come to your office at ten tomorrow morning, then?"

The assistant asked after flipping through his schedule. He chuckled softly.

"How could I do that? The old man is an elder, after all. Let’s do this: ten o’clock tomorrow morning, I’ll go to his nursing home to see him!"

’Charles Donovan would probably have a fit of apoplexy when he saw him. He didn’t want to treat him in his own hospital; he was afraid he might actually poison the man instead of saving him.’

The assistant said she understood and hung up. Julian Donovan closed his eyes, faced the sunlight streaming in from outside, and drifted into his thoughts.

His mother, Jean Coleman, had been a nurse at Donovan Hospital. She fell in love with his father, Adam Donovan, who was a doctor at the time. But Charles Donovan disapproved of Jean’s humble origins and forcibly broke them up. Jean was already pregnant with him at the time. Adam was forced to marry Vivian Sheridan, the daughter of a prominent family and Sean Donovan’s future mother. Vivian had been in love with Adam for years. The following year, Vivian gave birth to Sean Donovan.

But Adam Donovan was still deeply in love with Jean and couldn’t stand Vivian’s spoiled, aristocratic temper. One time, unable to take it anymore, he ran away from home and eloped with Jean and their son. The two hid in a remote village, opening a small clinic to make a living, until Adam was forcibly dragged back to Wincastle by men sent by Charles Donovan.

For Julian Donovan, that period in the countryside was his only memory of his father, and his only memory of a complete family. After that, Vivian Sheridan, enraged that Adam could never forget Jean, drove her car into a building on the side of the road in a suicidal rage, screaming that she wanted to die with him.

As a result, Vivian and Adam died at the scene. Sean Donovan, who was also in the car at the time, injured his leg in the crash.

From then on, he and Sean Donovan were like fire and water, hating each other’s guts.

Sean Donovan hated him. Sean believed that it was because Jean Coleman never completely broke things off with Adam Donovan that his own mother lost control and caused the tragedy.

And he, in turn, hated Sean Donovan. If not for his mother, Vivian Sheridan, willfully insisting on snatching Adam away, he wouldn’t have been called a fatherless bastard his whole childhood, and he and his mother wouldn’t have suffered so much. He’d heard that back then, Vivian had used quite a few tricks to get Adam. Not only did she bribe Charles Donovan, but she also schemed to get Adam drunk and into her bed.

After the car crash, Charles Donovan vented all his hatred on him and Jean. He made it so that no hospital in Wincastle, big or small, would hire Jean Coleman. Left with no choice, Jean found a job at a small private clinic in a residential complex, raising him with great difficulty on a meager salary.

From that day forward, he swore that one day he would stand before Charles Donovan in a position that would force the old man to look up to him. Now, he had finally done it.

After ending her call with Julian Donovan, Naomi Shaw went to the president’s office to find Sean Donovan. He looked terrible. She assumed he was just worried about the acquisition attempt by Mercy. She walked over and looked at him with concern.

"Sean, what are we going to do now?"

Sean Donovan gave her a reassuring smile.

"Anna, this isn’t something you need to worry about. Your only job is to be happy every day. Business matters are for men to handle!"

"But, Sean—"

Before she could say more, Sean Donovan cut her off.

"Anna, things aren’t as bad as you think. Go on back to work for now!"

Helpless, Naomi Shaw had no choice but to return to her post. The acquisition notice had sent a wave of panic through the entire hospital. Everyone was discussing whether they would be laid off if the acquisition went through, or how the Donovan Group would handle the crisis.

Charles Donovan never could have imagined that the so-called president of Mercy Hospital was none other than Julian Donovan, the very person he had been suppressing for years. When he saw Julian—dressed in a sharp black suit, carrying himself with a commanding, arrogant air—walk into the nursing home’s reception room, he was utterly stunned. His breathing immediately grew ragged, and he gasped as he pointed a trembling finger at him.

"How can it be you?"

Julian Donovan’s lips curved into a smile as he elegantly sat down across from Charles Donovan.

"And why shouldn’t it be me? Am I not worthy of this position? Just because my mother came from a humble background, you decided to negate everything about her, and everything about me? Is that it?"

The expression on Charles Donovan’s face was grim. The shock of Julian’s appearance had clearly hit him hard. With a trembling hand, he grabbed a nearby pill bottle, shook out several pills, and swallowed them before he found the strength to ask Julian a question.

"What do you want?"

"I don’t want anything. I’m just fulfilling my previous oath!"
