Chapter 148: Chapter 134: What Is There About You That I Don’t Know

She really didn’t know what to do about him.

She wanted to love him but didn’t dare to love again, leaving her conflicted and in pain.

Neither of the two, so deeply in love, had realized that every external obstacle only served to pull them closer. Only by going through such trials could they truly understand who belonged in their hearts.

Take Julian Donovan, for example. If she hadn’t left three years ago, their dynamic might have remained the same—her loving him humbly, him looking down from on high. But now, his willingness to lower himself, to love her and pursue her, was undoubtedly the best development their relationship could have had.

Perhaps a few more trials were needed before she could cast aside all her lingering resentment and find the courage to be with him.

「Inside the car.」

The sudden dimming of the light made Joy look up and out the window, where she saw the figures of two adults blocking her view. Dylan shot a glare at the large hand clasped unapologetically around his mother’s waist. He reached out his own small hand and turned Joy’s head to the side. "Don’t look, Joy. Dad is so annoying!"

"Mmm..."

Joy hummed obediently and lowered her head to play a music game on the iPad Dylan had just handed her. Dylan leaned over the seat, watching her pretty, rosy-cheeked face. He asked her tentatively, "Joy, do you know how to say ’Dad’?"

"Dad..."

Joy murmured the word without looking up from her game. Dylan quickly pressed on, "So, Joy, do you know who your dad is? Has Mom ever told you?"

Joy glanced up at him, then out the window. Without saying a word, she looked back down at her game. Dejected, Dylan slumped back into his seat. ’I really wish Joy was Mom and Dad’s kid too.’

’No, this won’t do!’ Dylan sat there, his little eyebrows knitted together. ’I have to find a way to get a paternity test for Dad and Joy. Dad’s a coward. He’s probably suspected it for a while too but doesn’t have the guts to find out. I’ll just have to be the one to face the results.’

Naomi Shaw handed him his overcoat, but he stuffed it back into her hands. "I’m not putting it on yet. I’ll just have to take it off again once I’m in the car!"

Then he turned and walked away. Clutching his overcoat, Naomi got into the car, her face burning. She couldn’t bring herself to look at the two children.

Dylan watched her pretend to look out the window, her cheeks flushed. He pressed his lips together, hiding a smile. ’Mom definitely still likes Dad. Otherwise, she’d be furious that he kissed her, not annoyed and flustered like she is now.’

Julian Donovan returned a moment later. After telling the movers they could leave, he got into the car. Once settled in the driver’s seat, he turned and handed a set of keys to her in the back. "I found these on the cabinet by the door. Do you need me to return them to Sean Donovan for you?" 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

"That won’t be necessary!"

She snatched the keys irritably. ’Who needs his help to return them?’ It was all his fault. He had completely humiliated her, and now she couldn’t even face the children.

Julian Donovan gave her a long look but said nothing more as he started the car and drove off. ’Selfishly, he didn’t want her to see Sean Donovan ever again, but he also knew she needed to settle things with him for good.’

Halfway to their destination, it suddenly dawned on Naomi Shaw. ’I never told him my new address, so how does he know the way?’ A thought suddenly struck her: ’No wonder the rent for my new place is so low. Did he have something to do with this?’

She immediately frowned and asked, "How do you know where I moved? I never told you the address!"

Julian glanced at her indignant face in the rearview mirror, a smile playing on his lips as he drove. "Is there anything about you that I *don’t* know?"

’When did she get so sharp?’ he thought. ’She saw right through me.’

Naomi Shaw was furious. ’He’s really sticking his nose into everything.’ "You manipulated the rent, didn’t you? I’ll pay you back for whatever you covered!"

Julian completely ignored her offer to pay him back and smoothly changed the subject. "Since you’ve already moved out of Sean Donovan’s house, you might as well quit your job at the Donovan Group. Come work at Mercy. They’re both hospitals, after all."

’Even though she’d moved out of Sean Donovan’s house, she was still working in Sean’s hospital. As far as he was concerned, the farther she was from Sean, the better. If she came to Mercy, she’d be working right under his nose. Let’s see where she could run then!’

Quitting was something Naomi Shaw had never considered. She had moved out simply because she didn’t want to owe Sean Donovan too much, not because she wanted to cut him out of her life completely. She still considered him a friend.
