Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Flowers for Summer Lancaster

It was nine o’clock. Kenneth Yates was at home, idly watching TV, but his mind wasn’t on the show. His thoughts were consumed by Summer. He grabbed his coat and decided to go find her.

「The Lancaster Residence」

Gregory Lancaster and Audrey Adler were in the living room watching television. Summer had come home today, a fact that made Audrey deeply unhappy. She complained that Summer hadn’t brought any gifts and was just there to eat and drink for free. Gregory, however, was delighted. Summer rarely came home after her marriage, and he missed her. Just then, they heard the sound of a car engine outside. Gregory checked his watch. It was almost ten. ’Who could be here at this hour?’ he wondered.

They went to open the door and saw Kenneth Yates stepping out of his car, his arms full of gifts. At this sight, Audrey’s face lit up as she welcomed him. Kenneth had never visited the Lancaster residence since the wedding. Even for the traditional newlywed homecoming, Summer had come back alone. As a result, none of the maids recognized the man with such a remarkable presence and dared not offer to help him with the gifts. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

"Kenneth, what brings you here?" Mr. Lancaster spoke first.

"Summer came home, didn’t she? I was worried, so I came to check on her. She hasn’t been feeling well lately." Kenneth sized up Gregory Lancaster. With his healthy complexion and vigorous movements, he didn’t look sick in the slightest. ’Summer actually dared to lie to me?’

Audrey Adler’s eyes were fixed on the gifts he was carrying. "Kenneth, please, come in and sit down."

"I’ll be in in a moment. These are some health supplements I bought for you." Kenneth handed the items over. Audrey accepted them, and as she saw that each one was incredibly valuable, her smile bloomed.

"Father-in-law, Mother-in-law, you two go on ahead. I have something to take care of. I’ll be in shortly."

"Of course. It’s cold out here, so come inside as soon as you’re finished." Gregory was inwardly intimidated by him. Despite being much older than Kenneth, he couldn’t ignore the man’s innate, commanding presence. ’The Lancaster Group was saved only by this marriage alliance,’ he mused. ’Afterward, Kenneth ignored us completely. Lianne Vance must have been the one who protected us. Otherwise, knowing Kenneth’s temperament, he would have certainly ruined our family. And why wouldn’t he? We all worked together to drive away the woman he loved.’

After they went inside, Kenneth took out his phone and dialed Summer’s number. He had to call several times before she finally answered.

"Kenneth Yates, will you ever stop?!" Summer exploded. She was so sick of him. He would constantly provoke her, only to ruthlessly kick her away again.

"Summer Lancaster, what kind of flowers do you like?" Kenneth ignored her anger.

"Roses!" Summer shouted, wanting only to hang up the phone as quickly as possible.

"In that case, look out your window."

’Out the window? Could he be here?’ Summer rushed to the window and threw it open. When she saw Kenneth standing below, holding a bouquet of champagne roses, tears welled in her eyes. She hung up and hurried downstairs.

"Kenneth, what are you doing here?" Her tone had softened considerably. Kenneth remained expressionless. This was the first time he’d ever given flowers to a woman. Dominic Thorne had told him it would make a girl happy, so he had bought champagne roses—a variety he happened to like himself.

"I came to see how you lied to me," he said curtly, handing the roses to Summer.

Summer lowered her head, avoiding his gaze. ’He must already know that my father isn’t sick.’ A pang of guilt hit her. It was so cold outside, and she had made him wait for so long. She’d rushed out in such a hurry that she was only in her pajamas, and the chilly air had already turned her cheeks red.

Kenneth wrapped an arm around her shoulders and guided her inside.

"Kenneth, have you had dinner yet?" Summer couldn’t help but worry about him. Kenneth shrugged. "No. Are you going to make me something?"

"Just a minute. I’ll go make some porridge."

Kenneth sat on the sofa and observed his surroundings. There were many photos on display, but they were all of Gregory Lancaster, Audrey Adler, and Yvonne Lancaster. There were no pictures of Summer—not a single one. ’What kind of life did Summer lead here?’ he wondered. ’This place doesn’t feel like her home at all. There’s no space here that’s truly hers.’
