Chapter 75: Chapter 75: This Is My Friend

Francelia

Watching the trade show on TV, Thea Shaw clenched her fists, glaring fiercely at the woman on the screen.

"I told you so. Now do you believe me?" The man with his back to her turned off the television and spun around. "He’s not the same person he used to be."

"Noel Lynch, just give me time! I’ll make him go back to the way he was before!" Thea Shaw’s expression was resolute, without a trace of hesitation.

"Don’t make me fight a losing battle." Noel Lynch stood up and grabbed Thea Shaw’s chin.

A terrified expression crossed Thea Shaw’s face. "Trust me! Please, trust me!" Her panicked expression and rushed words were proof enough of how much she feared Noel Lynch. She was terrified of him.

The Trade Show

The company’s employees were all suffering in silence, as if they’d just been force-fed durian. They had privately speculated about the relationship between Summer Lancaster and President Yates countless times, spreading all sorts of nasty rumors. Who could have possibly guessed that she was the actual First Lady of the company! Most of them were terrified. They were all scared stiff of Kenneth Yates’s reputation; who could guarantee they’d still have a job at the company tomorrow?

Only Serena Monroe offered a look of heartfelt congratulations.

The event transitioned into a ball, but Summer Lancaster was still reeling from the announcement, unable to pull herself away from that moment. She sat alone on a sofa in the corner, lost in a daze. Her colleagues were all exceedingly respectful now, going out of their way to greet her. She wasn’t used to it. A large company like this was brimming with talent; everyone was proud, and everyone had their own agenda. An invisible sense of competition always simmered, especially among peers. As a result, they rarely interacted outside of work-related matters.

Perhaps it was because she’d been branded with the title of ’the President’s wife,’ but Summer suddenly felt uncomfortable with everyone’s warmth.

The very people who used to spread gossip about her were now coming over to strike up conversations, and even Kenneth Yates’s secretaries were being incredibly courteous to her!

"Why are you sitting here all by yourself?"

Summer Lancaster looked up to see Melody Donovan. "It’s nothing. I just... I’m still trying to process everything!"

Melody Donovan smiled and sat down beside her. "You should be happy. At least this proves he really cares about you." Melody picked up a glass of red wine from the table and took a sip.

Summer Lancaster was so swept up in her own happiness that she’d completely forgotten Dominic Thorne was here too. ’I wonder if they’ve seen each other,’ she thought.

"Have you seen... him?" Summer asked tentatively.

Melody Donovan’s hand, which had been swirling her wine, suddenly stilled. She gazed out at the ballroom through the crimson liquid, her eyes growing cold. "Yeah, I saw him." She set down her glass and forced a smile. "Heh. You’re the main character today. We won’t be crossing paths again, will we? I’ll bury him deep in my heart, in a place that no one can ever touch."

Summer grabbed Melody’s hand. "Melody, there are so many good men in the world. Why get so hung up on him? Someone will recognize how wonderful you are."

"Yeah, I’m sure there will be."

"Hey, sis-in-law, you should go dance with the big boss! He looks pretty lonely over there." Melody had her back to Dominic Thorne, but she visibly tensed the moment she heard his voice.

"And who might this beauty be?" Dominic Thorne said, walking around to face Melody. When he saw who it was, his expression faltered for a split second before instantly returning to normal.

"Long time no see." Dominic Thorne extended his right hand.

Melody didn’t say a word, her expression unreadable. Dominic had no choice but to awkwardly retract his hand.

"Dominic, what took you so long!" The curvy woman from before ran over and latched onto Dominic Thorne’s arm.

"Sary, perfect timing. Let me introduce you. This is Summer Lancaster, Kenneth’s wife. And this... is my friend, Melody Donovan..."
