CEO, Your Wife Has Left-Chapter 90: The Final Indulgence
Kenneth suddenly wrapped his arms around her from behind, holding her fast in his embrace.
Summer was surprised, but then she relaxed and let him hold her, though her tears never stopped falling.
She could feel his warm breath on her neck. It was as if they had grown accustomed to this intimacy between them. Summer lifted her arm to hold his, closing her eyes. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
Kenneth spun her around and possessively crushed his lips to hers. Summer wrapped her arms around his neck, eagerly meeting his kiss. This only fueled Kenneth’s excitement. He swept her into his arms, kissing her madly as if he wanted to devour her whole.
She didn’t know how long they kissed. Summer felt her legs grow weak, but his passion showed no signs of waning. His hands held her fast as he continued to drink her in.
Kenneth finally released her, resting his forehead against hers. He stared at her from inches away, but she lowered her head, avoiding his gaze.
"Kenneth." Summer gently pushed him away and took a step back, putting some distance between them.
"What’s wrong?" Kenneth asked, his hand still holding hers as he watched her back away.
Summer tearfully shook his hand off. "Let’s just stop lying to ourselves, okay? You can’t forget her, so why are you trying to force yourself to like me? I’ve been trying to convince myself that you like me, but what’s the point? You’ve lied to me, and you’ve lied to yourself! Kenneth, we’re over..." Summer backed away step by step, her heart bleeding. She longed for his passionate embrace, but this had been their last indulgence.
’Wasn’t it true? They were both lying to themselves. They could numb their own feelings, but they couldn’t hypnotize each other into believing the lie...’
Kenneth stared at his hand, still hanging in the air where she had flung it aside. He froze, completely at a loss. ’He liked her! He wasn’t lying to her, and he certainly wasn’t lying to himself!’
When he looked up, she had already backed far away. But she was still staring at his face. She was afraid. ’In the future, every extra second she could look at him would be an impossible luxury, so she had to commit his face to memory.’
Suddenly, Summer let out a sharp cry. She hadn’t seen the rock behind her and had tripped over it. Just beyond her was a steep slope.
"Summer!" In a panic, Kenneth scrambled forward and grabbed her arm, pulling her into his protective embrace. He held her tight as they tumbled down the slope together.
Tears streamed down Kenneth’s face. ’This time, I can’t lose her again. We’ve already lost each other once. I can’t go through that kind of soul-crushing pain again...’
Because Kenneth had shielded her, Summer wasn’t badly hurt—just a few scrapes and bruises. Wincing, she scrambled to her feet, only to find that Kenneth had lost consciousness.
"Kenneth! Kenneth! Don’t you die on me! You’re not allowed to die... *sob*... Kenneth..." His head had struck a rock and was bleeding profusely.
Summer collapsed onto his chest, sobbing. ’He wouldn’t have gotten hurt if it weren’t for me. He wouldn’t be this badly injured if he hadn’t deliberately protected me.’ A wave of self-blame washed over Summer. ’It’s all my fault.’
Kenneth’s fingers twitched, and then he slowly opened his eyes. "What are you... crying for? I’m... not... dead!"
Weeping with relief, Summer quickly pushed herself off him and wiped the tears from her face. "Thank God, you’re okay! Wait a second... you didn’t just pretend to pass out to mess with me, did you?"
Kenneth managed a smile, his pale face drained of all color. "Did you think I carry spare blood packs with me on dates?" His voice was weak, and he gasped for breath.
"I’m so sorry, this is all my fault." As she spoke, Summer ripped a strip of fabric from her dress to bandage his wound.
