CEO, Your Wife Has Left-Chapter 99: You’re Only Responsible for the Sweetness
Summer Lancaster hadn’t gone far when she saw Kenneth Yates and Dominic Thorne. They seemed to be discussing something, their expressions grave. Just as Summer was about to walk past, she suddenly stopped. She had heard them mention Caleb Bell!
"Boss, we’ve wrapped up the investigation. They’re clever; all the transactions were made through foreign accounts. It took our people some time to trace everything."
"I knew it. Noel Lynch had no idea where I was, and Carls certainly didn’t know I’d gone to Francelia. How could they have known to come right for me? Someone must have leaked my whereabouts to them." Kenneth Yates frowned. ’Caleb Bell... So he’s finally made his move. That explains what he meant by "next time" the other day. Is he saying he won’t let me off so easily next time? What gives him the confidence to think he can get me again!’
"Boss, I never imagined Caleb Bell would cooperate with Noel Lynch. They shouldn’t have any reason to interact. And why would they both hate you?"
"I don’t know when they connected, but I know why Caleb Bell hates me!"
"What is it?"
"Summer Lancaster! He’s in love with her. He started holding a grudge against me after he found out she had already married me." ’Right. And it just so happened that Noel Lynch was preparing to make a move. Caleb must have investigated my enemies and found Noel at the perfect time. That way, he could get rid of me, protect his own reputation, and ensure Summer would never suspect a thing!’
Hearing this, Summer Lancaster covered her mouth, hardly able to believe her ears. ’Caleb Bell hurt Kenneth Yates... for me? When did this happen? Why didn’t I know? Kenneth never told me what happened in Francelia. He just said it was all work. Was that when it happened?’ Summer quietly slipped away, not wanting to alert them.
She walked back to her hospital room, completely preoccupied. Their words echoed in her mind: ’Caleb Bell is cooperating with Noel Lynch.’
’Who is Noel Lynch, anyway? And what in the world are they working together on?’
"Miss Lancaster, you couldn’t find Mr. Yates?" the nurse asked, concerned when she saw Summer return alone, looking rather dazed.
"Ah, no, that’s not it. When they get back, could you please not tell them I went looking for them?" With that, she went straight into her room, the knot of anxiety in her heart tightening.
The nurse outside the door was baffled. ’Those two are so strange.’ Another nurse had been on duty just before, and Mr. Yates had specifically told her not to let Miss Lancaster know where he was. But the nurses had changed shifts, and the new one, unaware of his request, had told her. Now, Miss Lancaster was asking her not to tell Mr. Yates she’d gone looking for him. The nurse could only shrug to herself. ’The lives of the rich are truly impossible to figure out!’
Summer Lancaster lay on the hospital bed, staring at the plain white ceiling as she sank into contemplation. ’Why didn’t he tell me what happened? Was he afraid I would worry? He’s wrong. The less I know, the more insecure I feel. I want to be a part of everything in his life... or at the very least, do whatever I can to help him.’
When Kenneth Yates returned, he saw Summer Lancaster apparently asleep. He smiled, sat down on the edge of the bed, and watched her. With her back to him, Summer’s eyes were wide open. ’Should I ask him? I just don’t know.’ She was completely torn.
She rolled over and sighed. "Kenneth Yates, aren’t we supposed to face everything together, the good and the bad?"
"You’re only responsible for the good," Kenneth Yates replied, looking seriously into her eyes.
The light in Summer Lancaster’s eyes dimmed. ’Maybe I shouldn’t ask after all. Everyone has secrets they want to keep, and besides, he already gave me his answer.’
