Chapter 38: Strike Zone

Due to the tall grass, it was difficult to tell where the other participants were. However, it was obvious to Ethan that neither side was empty.

The Thunder of Four Howls occurred too rarely for those who wanted to take part to miss it.

To complicate matters further, everyone knew when the next Thunder of the Four Howls would occur, as it was easy to tell by the full moon and the weather. So, besides Ethan and Klaus in the north, there were also many people in the east, west, and south ready to fight for a chance to face the Lost Knight.

Step. Step. Step.

Klaus rushed forward, approaching the Grim Knight. The knight paid no attention to him until Klaus got close enough.

With the next step, they both swung their swords as the blades collided with each other. Then, again and again, each time ending with a cascade of sparks covering the gray ground.

Ethan was in no hurry to confront his opponent. They needed eight grim shards, which was no small feat, and the storm was growing stronger. The next thunder strike wouldn’t allow him to hide behind a tree.

’Hmm.’ Ethan glanced over his shoulder at the dark fog thickening into walls. ’That’s what Klaus was talking about. We won’t be able to get out just like that, and I think it will be even harder to get in once the trial starts. ’

Then, he realized that he was just in time. If he had delayed or decided to wait for Menir to wake up instead of leaving a note on the table, he would have simply missed the beginning.

By the time he arrived, the Thunder of Four Howls would be in full swing, preventing anyone from entering.

Like Klaus, Ethan remained vigilant. He didn’t want another arrow flying into his head, but now he had another task as well.

"So, who’s going to attack first?" Ethan asked, glancing at the Grim Knight.

There was no answer.

The Grim Knight stood in his place as if Ethan weren’t there. It wasn’t that the Grim Knight didn’t respond to the taunt, the monster didn’t even look in Ethan’s direction.

’Wait, could it be that they’re blind? One of them cut the arrow, but that can be done with sharp hearing as well.’

A blind but powerful enemy was not something Ethan was used to facing. Before becoming a Carrier, he never fought monsters, only ran away.

To test his theory, Ethan picked up a rock and threw it to the side.

However, the Grim Knight did not react, as if he did not hear anything.

"I see... So you’re deaf as well. This is going to be a little more complicated." Ethan hummed before picking up another rock.

This time, Ethan threw the stone so that it flew right in front of the Grim Knight. There was no chance that the stone would hit the monster or even scratch its armor.

But the Grim Knight, without hesitation, cut the stone in half.

Then, Ethan understood how these guards worked.

’He can’t hear or see, but he can feel. He will attack anything that gets too close, but how can I use that?’

Coming up with a plan, Ethan nodded and moved forward.

Each step was short and slow. He knew there was a clear distance beyond which the Grim Knight would immediately attack him. He was ready for it.

Whoooooosh.

With his next step, the Grim Knight attacked without hesitation. Since Ethan was at the very edge, the knight had to make a piercing lunge.

The sharp tip of the sword moved straight toward Ethan, who reacted quickly and spun around. The blade whizzed past him as he found himself directly in front of the Grim Knight.

Before the knight could react, Ethan grabbed him by the head and plunged a dagger into the slit in his helmet.

The Grim Knight trembled, the clang of his armor resounding as a dark mist emerged from his body, condensing into a small crystal the size of a fingernail.

"So, is this it?" Ethan asked as he grabbed the crystal.

[Grim Shard

A small fragment containing a piece of the power of the Lost Knight, a great swordsman who repeatedly shows himself to the world during storms to fight and return to his chamber.]

Ethan frowned. He learned from Klaus that the Lost Knight was the final monster at the Desolate Meadow, but he didn’t understand how the Thunder of Four Howls could repeat itself over and over again.

’I mean, if this event happens constantly, then someone must have defeated the Lost Knight multiple times, right? Doesn’t that mean the Lost Knight must be dead?’

Unlike most, Ethan only had to understand all the details of this trial. However, neither he, Klaus, nor their rivals had ever seen the Lost Knight. They only knew that he would appear immediately after the fourth thunder strike.

A rustling sound came from the tall grass as Klaus appeared.

He held two grim shards in his hand.

"Oh, you managed to get one. Hah, I was worried you’d turn out to be a weakling." Klaus smiled.

Ethan raised an eyebrow.

"Agh? I dodged your attack. Doesn’t that say a lot?"

Klaus waved his hand as if it didn’t matter.

"Nah, it was a bad shot. I understand that even more now. Besides, just because you have good reflexes doesn’t mean you know how to fight. Look."

Then, he pointed to the ground.

Confused, Ethan lowered his head as his eyes widened.

Streams of blood ran through the tough blades of grass, soaking the cold ground. The Grim Knights weren’t the strongest monsters for the First Rank Carriers, but their swords remained dangerous.

One precise swing was enough for the blade to pass through the neck and sever the head of one of the participants.

Apparently, this was what had happened somewhere in the field, but there was another possibility.

Not all participants were eager to fight the Grim Knight to get shards, because they could take shards from others.

That was exactly what several figures moving toward the unsuspecting Klaus and Ethan were planning to do. Their grins were malicious, and their curved daggers were covered in blood.
