Chapter 110: You were talking to the willow tree...

Valerie felt touched by those words. It seemed her parents were deeply in love.

If they were alive, would they shower her with as much love as they showered each other?

She looked up at Margret who was staring at her with caring eyes. Seeing she was caught staring, Margret lowered her head right away.

"What’s on your mind?" Valerie asked.

"It’s just..." She raised her head and smiled softly. "You’ve grown into such a beautiful and refined lady." She said. "You look like your mother when she was still in her early twenties. An exact replica."

After saying those words, they fell into a sudden silence.

The wind broke that silence with its gentle flow and scattered her hair in the wind. Valerie swiped her hair behind her ear and said with a soft smile on her face as well,

"I’m thankful for that at least."

Max held her hand firmly and said,

"Things really have changed." He said. "You can hear more about your parents from Margret later, but for now, let us pay our respects to your parents."

"Ah, of course, I’ll leave you two be." Margret said and started walking away.

Once she was gone, Valerie turned her attention to the flower beds in front of them and slowly went down on her knees.

Max followed her and watched her bow her head.

"It’s the first time I’m coming to see you." She said and raised her head. "It was all thanks to the bad circumstances I was in but now, it’s all cleared up." She said. "I’ve grown up this far without dying and I’m married now."

As soon as Max heard that, he turned his head to the grave.

"Mother, Father, this is my husband, Maximus Stewart. The son of your close friend, Tiana Stewart." She explained and they both interlocked their fingers. "I heard you planned to engage both of us when we were born but because of the accident... " She paused. "Anyway, fate works in a peculiar way and we both find ourselves together." She smiled. "I’m filled with so much contentment right now and it’s all thanks to him."

She smiled at him. Max smiled back and took this as his cue to speak.

"Mother-in-law, father-in-law, I’ll make sure to take care of Valerie with all I have." He promised. "I’ll offer her the best life has to offer and make sure she never lacks." He smiled warmly at her. "I’ll make her happy."

As soon as he finished saying that, Valerie brought out her phone and said,

"And I know you won’t be able to go back on your words." She said and laughed. She was recording this whole time.

"Wait, do you seriously doubt me?" Max asked in disbelief and she laughed.

"No, I don’t." She said, still laughing. "But I seem to have done it out of habit."

"You and your habits." He pulled her to himself and she fell on him, still laughing.

She looked at the flowers as they danced in the wind and said,

"Mother, father, I used to hate you for bringing me into this world and then leaving me behind, since all I had was suffering and heartache. But not anymore." She said and got up with Max. "Now, I’m grateful that you brought me into this world to become the other half of this loving man." She bowed her head and he, too, bowed his head. "Thank you."

"Are you done?" Max asked and she nodded. "Then, let’s go and see that assistant of yours."

"Wait, she’s here too?" Valerie asked him and he nodded.

"There was a time I heard you murmuring in your sleep." He said as he led her. "I thought you were having a nightmare but it was actually a dream. A dream about Willow trees. And you were talking to the willow as if it were a friend."

"Did I have a dream like that?" She asked, unsure as she could not remember having such dreams as if late. "It was before the wedding fiasco." He said to her and she exclaimed,

"Ah. That dream."

"You were talking to the willow tree and then you called your assistant’s name." He said and she nodded.

Valerie actually had a dream like that. After knowing that Frankie was dead, she understood what she meant when she appeared in her dream and said she always wanted to sleep under a willow tree.

Frankie wanted to be buried under a willow tree. So the dreams of her that followed were dreams of a willow tree, whom she assumed was Frankie.

She talked to the tree and it indeed felt like she was talking to Frankie. The things she could not say to her when she was alive, she said all of it in her dream.

Valerie looked up and her eyes widened as she saw a willow tree up front. It was large and beautiful. Its falling leaves were dangling and fluttering with the wind.

"So," Maximus continued. "I figured her resting place had to be below a willow tree."

"Max, this is..."

"The resting place of your only friend." He answered and the wind blew once more.

Besides the truck of the willow tree... For a moment, she thought she saw Frankie standing next to it and smiling at her. And then she mouthed the words,

"It’s over."

The breeze blew harshly, allowing falling leaves and flower petals to blow around, reminding her of her dream and she smiled with teary eyes.

Frankie has seen her effort and is finally going to rest in peace.

"Thank you, Max." Valerie suddenly said, clinging to his arm and cleaning the tears from her eyes. "Thank you for doing this for Frankie."

"I didn’t do this for her." Max said and swiped her hair out of her face. "I did this for my wife."

She stared into his eyes, her heart feeling very warm. The way this man noticed every little detail in the things she did and took her words into consideration... She couldn’t have asked for a more loving and caring man.

He might be cruel and cold to the outside world, but as long as he was kind to her, he was the best man in the world.

"Nevertheless, thank you." She said and got on her tiptoes to plant a soft and quick kiss on his lips. She smiled and added. "You’ve done so much for me, that I can only do this in return."

"You want to pay me back?" Max asked, pressing their foreheads together. "Then don’t have that gloomy look on your face, never cry for random people. In fact, never cry at all. I forbid it. Always look at me with a smile, be happy, and lastly... Love only me." He said. "That’s the only way you can make it up to me."

"Alright." She said and raised her phone, once again exposing herself to have recorded his words.

"You... It seems I’ll have to punish you for this." He said. "If I let you go now, you’ll keep doing it."

"Wait, what do you mean punish?" She asked, wondering what he was trying to do while they were in the open. And then, he started tickling her.

Valerie, who didn’t realize she was very sensitive to tickles, ended up laughing like she had been sprayed with laughing gas while begging for mercy. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Margret watched from afar and smiled warmly. It’s good to see that they were living a happy life after all the problems.

"I hope you can see this." She muttered and glanced at the graves. "Your daughter’s all grown up."
