Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 153: You had me worried there
Valerie and Tiana, after walking out of the doctor’s office, lurked around, wondering if Valerie’s suspicions would be affirmed and truly, they saw someone walk in. It was a lady and they didn’t know if it was the person after them or just a regular doctor’s visit.
"Not only were they following us, but they also wanted to know why you came to the hospital." Tiana muttered, causing Valerie to grit her teeth.
"I’ll go check." She said, but Tiana held her back, grabbing her hand and halting her from moving any further.
"I’m not letting you go. It could be dangerous." She said but Valerie stubbornly pursed her lips.
She took one good look at her and then turned to stare at the doctor’s door. Tiana would never let her go in this situation.
She sighed and relaxed her shoulders.
"Alright." She said. "For all we know, it might be a mistake on our path and that could just be a random person, but if that was the person following us all along, we’d just be letting them go."
"That’s the only thing we can do right now." Tiana said and also sighed. "If that person is dangerous, we have no means of protecting you, and if anything happens to you..." She shook her head. "I would never forgive myself. And I know a tad bit of people who would also blame me for not keeping an eye on you and letting you act recklessly, so..." She looked into Valerie’s eyes. "Safety first."
"But that person..." She clenched her fists. "Her frame looked familiar."
"Familiar or not. We know that they’re trying to get information on you. For now, we should hope the doctor keeps to his word and not tell anyone that you’re actually pregnant." Tiana explained. "Whoever sent them is definitely your enemy."
Just then, Valerie’s phone rang and she checked the caller ID to see it was Max. Her eyes widened, feeling she had been discovered.
But she didn’t know that yet. She had to stay calm and answer like nothing was wrong.
"Hey, thought you were busy." She said, licking her lips and acting completely normal.
"Valerie, I’m at the hospital." He went straight to the point and her eyes widened. She looked at Tiana, who was oblivious to Max’s words, and she sighed.
"Alright, we’re on our way down from the third floor. We... We’ll be down shortly." She said and cut the call.
"What happened?" Tiana asked and Valerie shook her head.
"Max knows we came to the hospital." She said and Tiana palmed her face.
"That father of mine... Didn’t I tell him not to worry the boy?" She exclaimed and looked at Valerie. "Don’t worry. I know you want to give this news to him as a surprise, so I’ll rake it from here. We’ll just tell him we came to get a checkup."
"Max won’t believe I volunteered to come to a hospital just to get a check-up." She said, rubbing her arms and then folding them. "He knows I still get shaken just from being here."
"But you came with me to get a check-up, did you not? Around the time when I just entered his life. And at that time, you were in a worse situation than this but you still managed to come to the hospital." She explained and Valerie nodded. "If we tell him we came together because I didn’t want to come to get a check-up alone, he won’t ask further." She said and then darted her eyes aside. ’He may blame me for putting you in harm’s way, but it’s still something.’
She looked at Valerie. Seeing the worry in her expression, she sighed and patted her head.
"If it’s too much, we can just tell him you’re pregnant and all will be over." She said. "It’s not like he’ll be any less surprised about it."
"We don’t need to go that far." Valerie said and started walking ahead.
Tiana followed and started walking beside her.
"So, when you said that person seemed familiar, did anyone come to mind?" She asked but Valerie shook her head.
"Not really. It might’ve just been me overthinking it. But if not, if it’s someone I’ve seen before, I might just recognize them once I see them again." She said.
They took the elevator and as soon as it opened, they saw Max.
"I..."
Valerie’s words did not leave her lips before Max rushed in to embrace her. He hugged her tight and said,
"You had me worried there."
Valerie, stunned for a moment, blinked her eyes. She didn’t expect him to react like that but of course, that was the kind of guy he was.
She hugged him back and said,
"Nothing happened to me. You don’t need to worry."
Max broke the hug after successfully attracting the attention of the people around them. They were staring at the couple and wondering what was going on.
"Where are they?" He asked. "Where’s the person following you?"
"Still upstairs." Tiana answered. "We didn’t approach because they could be dangerous."
Hearing this, Max sighed. He hugged Valerie once more and said,
"I’m glad you didn’t act recklessly." He said, and Valerie darted her eyes aside. She almost did act recklessly.
If not for Tiana stopping her, she would’ve marched towards the Doctor’s office in an attempt to expose whoever it was that had been following them.
"But... What brought you to the hospital anyway?" Max asked and they both flinched. "You’re not sick, are you? You’d never come to the hospital even if I asked."
"She came with me to get a check-up." Tiana quickly spoke up. "She was bored staying at home so she agreed to come with me. But for precaution, I made sure she kept her nose mask on at all times."
Max stared at his mother for a while with a suspicious gaze and then towards Valerie.
It was a plausible explanation but something was telling him there was something else.
"Why don’t I believe you?" He suddenly asked.
"Because you’re paranoid." Valerie said and caressed his face. "I’m fine, as you can see. The check-up didn’t take long either. So, let’s just go home now."
Max sighed and wrapped his arms around her neck.
"Don’t scare me like that." He said. "When Gramps told me to come get you because there was a suspicious person following you, I was worried. But then he told me you were at the hospital, I grew confused and anxious. But you’re fine, thank God. Why didn’t you call me right away?"
"I didn’t want to disturb you while you were at work." Valerie said.
"Valerie, this concerns your safety. No matter what, making sure you’re safe is my first priority. Screw work. Do you think I’d be able to work if anything happened to you?"
"Yeah, you wouldn’t." She leaned on him. "I’ll call you next time. I promise."
"Good."
"But wait, what’s the second priority?" Valerie asked, and he grinned. He leaned in and whispered in her ear, causing her to flush in embarrassment.
"Pervert." She muttered and he laughed.
"You wanted to know, so I told you."
"Bit hoe can that be your second priority? What happened to work?" She asked while pounding his back.
"That’s just that. It’s not my priority." He said, smiling softly at her. "You and everything that has to do with you are my priority."
Touched, she blushed.
"You’re so weird."
"Only for you, my wife." He said and pecked her cheek.
Tiana rolled her eyes. She, as well as all the onlookers, suddenly felt like they had become the official third wheel to these couples that were lost in their own world.
What a beautiful thing to fall in love, right?
They got out of the hospital and Valerie finally took off her nose mask, breathing in the fresh air of the atmosphere.
She sighed.
"You good?" Max asked, and she nodded, smiling at him in response.
Max parked his car not too far from the hospital, so they walked a few steps before getting there.
Max was just about to open the door when he paused, feeling something was strange.
There were extra fingerprints on the door handle and they were quite visible. Like, whoever did it wanted them to know the car had indeed been tampered with.
"Valerie, would you mind stepping back a bit?" He asked.
"Yeah, why?"
"I feel the car’s been tampered with."
