Chapter 79: Valerie hears the truth

Valerie searched for the scarf but could not find it. She wanted to keep it safe, as well as the things Max had given her, hoping to keep them safely as her precious and happy memories were with those things.

"Are you looking for something?" Frankie asked as she walked in with Valerie’s dinner on a tray.

"Yes, where’s the scarf?" She asked. "Did you take it to the dryer?"

"That, I folded it in the bag as well." She said, and Valerie paused.

"What?"

"I assume that was what was instructed of me." She said. "Did you not see it inside the bag?"

"I... I didn’t check." Valerie said and lazily sat on her bed with her hand on her neck. She remembered Max’s expression when he looked inside the bag.

The scarf was something he gave her out of love and care for her health yet it looked like she returned it. It was no wonder he had that broken expression.

"Did I do it wrong?" Frankie asked but Valerie shook her head.

"It’s okay." She said. The fewer things she had of him, the less she would think of him, right? She curled up in her bed and said,

"You can eat the food. I don’t have much appetite." She said. "I just want to sleep."

Frankie looked worriedly at her and sighed.

"Alright. But I already ate so I’ll take it to the fridge. Someone is bound to eat it after a while anyway." She said and headed for the door. "Goodnight, Miss."

Valerie’s heart ached. She was the one who did the hurting her she was feeling this much pain. She could not even begin to imagine how Max was feeling.

’I hope he comes to school tomorrow. I want to at least look at his face even if we can’t be together.’ she thought and hugged her knees.

The image of Max crying and confessing how much he loved her broke her and her heart quivered. She was moved to tears as well but her eyes wouldn’t tear up.

She was just sad.

The next day, while getting ready for school, Valerie heard a commotion from outside and asked Frankie what it was about.

"A servant was found dead." She said, and Valerie nodded like it was a usual occurrence.

"What was it this time? Which of their schemes failed that an innocent person had to die on my behalf?"

Frankie pursed her lips and answered,

"That is..." She slightly lowered her head in guilt. "The food I was meant to serve you last night, the one I had taken to the refrigerator... It was actually poisoned."

Valerie paused and then continued adjusting her uniform. Once more, another stroke of luck saved her.

"Then I assume that the servant ate the food?"

"Yes, miss." Frankie nodded.

"When will they learn to be content? I hope with this, they will finally learn not to take what isn’t theirs."

She picked up her bag and subconsciously wanted to pick up the scarf she would’ve hung up but realized it was no longer with her and paused.

"Yeah, that’s right." She muttered to herself and clutched her bag. "This is how it has always been." She raised her head. "You should hurry up and come to school as well." She said, and Frankie nodded.

It was quite early to be going to school but she liked going early. She’d walk and get on the bus, have enough of her alone time, and also so that Frankie wouldn’t be late, because she tends to put her things first before hers.

As she walked past Lucy’s room, she heard Victoria’s voice.

"She’s such a lucky brat." She said, and Valerie immediately realized that she was the one they were talking about.

It wasn’t surprising that they were the ones behind the poisoning attempt but were they stupid? Didn’t they know that her inheritance would be given to charity if she were to die now?

She was just about to walk away and ignore them when she heard her uncle’s voice and paused. Why was he in Lucy’s room as well?

"That poison was supposed to make her blind at the very least." Bernard said. "And with that, she would’ve signed the papers and transferred the property to me already. This is so infuriating."

Valerie was silent and she quietly took out her phone to record their conversation. Their plans were always crazy, but now they wanted to make her blind? Did they not know when to stop?

Then why did the servant die?

"It’s good we got rid of that servant." Victoria suddenly said. "If not, there would be evidence that we were trying to make that bratty heir blind. Just thinking of her infuriates me."

"Mummy, calm down." That was Lucy’s voice. "It’s too bad she didn’t die but don’t worry, I won’t let her ruin our happiness." She said, and Victoria stroked her hair.

"My darling daughter is so caring." Victoria said

Valerie was done listening. She hated it when they acted like a loving family. It made her sick. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

"You’re such a considerate daughter." Bernard said. "Ah, if only we had taken care of her back then along with her parents, this problem would never have existed."

Valerie flinched. What did he say? She looked at her phone and watched the numbers of the recording counting continuously. Did she hear that right?

"That accident should’ve finished them all off." Bernard said. "They were always acting all nice but I knew my sister very well. She was a petty and pretentious thing. She just wanted to keep it all and keep looking down on me, leaving only a branch for me to manage. Tch, I’m now the one owning it all, there’s nothing she can do from the grave." He cackled.

"Dear, let’s think of other ways to get that brat to sign the papers. The efforts we put into getting to where we are now should not be wasted because that brat managed to survive." Victoria said.

"Mummy, why don’t I try?" Lucy said and they looked at her. "I’ll push her to the edge. She’s so indifferent to everything that I want to make a devil out of her." She laughed and they all laughed.

"That’s actually a good idea." Bernard agreed to it."If they all believe she’s a bad child and can’t manage the company, she won’t be able to take over, even if she comes of age." They laughed.

Valerie ran out of there, back to her room. Frankie saw her rushing over and was about to ask what was wrong but Valerie pushed past her and hurried to the bathroom aftet tossing her bag aside.

She threw up a lot of liquid as her stomach had nothing in it. Her insides shunned. It was like she would throw up her organs as well.

It was disgusting. They were disgusting. Those people... She clutched the toilet bowl, her eyes tearing up in pain as she kept throwing up. She hated them. She hated all of them. She would make sure they suffered. She would make sure they paid for their sins.
