Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 98: She’s got a high fever
"I’m here to see Valerie." Max said to the secretary whose office was right outside Valerie’s.
As soon as the Secretary looked up and saw who it was, her face flushed. She had seen him on the screen a bunch of times but seeing him up close was completely different.
Her face flushed and her heartbeat accelerated.
’Is this...love at first sight?’ she thought but those silly thoughts immediately died down as soon as Mariam snapped her fingers in front of her.
"What do you think you’re doing?" She asked, knowing fully well that this secretary was ogling over her brother. "For someone who’s extremely busy, you seem to have all the time in the world to stare at your boss’ husband."
"Oh, uh... my apologies." The secretary said, bowing her head in embarrassment. "Miss Ross is in her office."
Max wasted no time and made his way to the door.
Mariam eyed the secretary before walking away. For some reason, she was disappointed.
She planned to work as Valerie’s assistant because it seemed her assistant was not very capable and could not be fully trusted but it seemed her secretary needed replacement as well.
How dare she have such eyes on a married man? She understood that her brother could be considered the most handsome man in the country but that did not give her the right.
Max had ignored that secretary because he honestly couldn’t waste his strength on her. He was already excited with the thought of surprising Valerie so he didn’t want such an incident to ruin his mood.
He opened the door to Valerie’s office but found her resting her head on her desk.
’Is she asleep?’ he thought and walked quietly towards her desk.
From afar, it would look like she was asleep, resting her head on the desk but the closer he got, the more he noticed how pale her complexion was and her abnormal breathing.
He stood next to her, only to find her wheezing heavily, cold sweat rolling down her skin, and an expression of anguish on her face. She looked like she was in pain.
"Valerie." He called, alarmed and Mariam rushed closer to see what was going on.
Max placed his hand on her head only to discover the abnormality in her temperature. It was dangerously high.
And then, she coughed.
"Valerie." He called out again.
"What’s wrong with her?"
"She’s got a high fever." Max said and attempted to carry her. "Thai is way past pharmacy medicine. I’m taking her to the hospital."
He lifted her off her feet and started heading for the door.
Mariam was confused. What could she do at a time like this? She looked at the things on Valerie’s desk. Was it really ideal to leave it all like that?
As soon as Max got to the door, it opened, revealing Valerie’s assistant, Stacy.
"Wha...what’s going on?" Stacy asked, confused as her eyes went down from the tall handsome man standing in front of her to her boss in his arms. "Miss Valerie." She called noticing how pale she looked. "Oh no, I warned her not to overdo it but she didn’t listen again."
Max glared at Stacy, figuring her out to be her assistant. The one who was not capable enough to assist his wife reduce such a heavy workload. He gritted his teeth.
This was no time to be nitpicking. Taking Valerie to the hospital was of utmost priority.
"Move." Max grunted but Stacy was a tad too sluggish so he pushed her aside and started heading for the elevator at full speed. His only concern was Valerie and no one else and making sure she was okay was all he cared about now.
Stacy watched Max hurry away. She looked at the secretary who was equally confused and bit her bottom lip. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
"It’s not my fault she fainted. He didn’t have to treat me so rudely." Stacy complained and started dusting her outfit. "I mean, I did my best by warning that haughty princess so many times. She just wanted to remain arrogant and act as she pleased. Tch, she thought she was superwoman, huh? Carrying on so much work without proper rest." She casually shrugged her shoulders. "Compared to that haughty princess," she licked her lips. "I think I’d be better suited for Maximus Stewart."
She laughed and looked at the secretary who stared in horror. Her expression confused her.
"What’s wrong? It’s not like this is the first time I’m bad-mouthing her. What’s with that expression?"
This audacious secretary had no idea that there was one more person in the office. Someone who should never have heard of her defaming and careless words.
Stacy suddenly started feeling chills from behind and then a hand dropped on her shoulder, causing her to flinch.
Slowly, she turned her head to see who it was, only to see someone similar to a devil’s incarnate, glaring darkly at her.
"I see." Mariam said. "So that’s the kind of person you have been this whole time."
"W-who are you?" Stacy asked but a slap went flying across her cheek, shooking her.
"It seems my sister-in-law got one hell of a workload thanks to someone." Mariam said, frakcingnher knuckles. "I’d very much like to beat some sense into you, hoping such a thing doesn’t happen again."
"Si-sister... In-law?" Stacy stuttered, her eyeballs shaking in fear. "Then, you... You must be..."
Mariam flipped her hair behind her neck and stood confidently with her arrogance reaching the roof.
"Yes, I am a Stewart." She said. "And right now, I feel so angry because my sister-in-law is in such a state. Was it you?" She asked, stepping closer.
Stacy instinctively stepped back and gritted her teeth.
This lady... She had to be Maximus’ sister. And if that was the case, then she was no more than 19 years old. But, could a 19-year-old possess such a terrifying aura presence?
She wasn’t ordinary.
She looked so mature and smart that she was even starting to question her own intelligence. To think she could not even stand up against a 19-year-old.
’I guess that’s why they’re so formidable.’ Stacy thought. ’I bet even the young kids have great business sense.’
The thought of retaliating came to mind. Since this wasn’t Stewart but Ross, having her act however she liked was too much.
But then thinking of the fact that Ross and Stewart were now joined by marriage... She’d be dead if she tried to retaliate.
"Are you ignoring me?" Mariam asked, squinting her eyes in disgust and Stacy shook her head.
"N-no." She said. "Not at all. I don’t dare to." She humbled herself.
"Then, answer my question." Mariam demanded harshly, her eyes glowing in disdain. "Why was my sister-in-law like that?"
