Chapter 232: Aziel Vs Lucien [1]

Aziel rested his cheek on his palm, staring blankly at the professor’s drone-like explanation of advanced elemental dynamics.

Man... When’s this gonna end?

He wasn’t exactly dumb, but sitting through hours of mana theory was borderline torture.

And to make matters worse?

Alden was still missing.

Aziel hadn’t seen him since that message after the ruins incident.

No texts. No weird jokes.

Not even a sarcastic "I lived, bitch."

The bastard just vanished.

So Aziel did what he could.

He threw himself into training. Hard.

He’d clawed his way to the peak of the Advanced Initiate Rank, and he could feel it — just a bit more, and he’d crack into the next stage.

Almost there, he thought. Just a few more training sessions.

"Class dismissed."

Finally.

He shot up from his chair, already tossing his notebook into his storage ring.

Amyra and Nyx had already dipped — classic.

Cecilia was halfway through the exit.

"Oi, Cecilia, wait up!" Aziel called out.

She didn’t stop.

Didn’t even turn.

His eyes twitched.

She must not have heard me.

He tried to convince himself because denial is free, and delulu is solulu.

Aziel made a beeline to catch her — and ran into a wall.

Not an actual one.

A Lucien-shaped one.

"Hey," Lucien said, his tone flat. "I need a word."

Aziel blinked. "Yo."

He didn’t hate Lucien.

Barely even knew the guy, honestly.

Cecilia had mentioned him a couple of times. Said he was odd but not bad.

Aziel had spoken to him maybe twice. He always gave off weird vibes, though.

Like the type to burn your house down over a few words about Seles.

But whatever.

"Sure, buddy. What’s up?"

Lucien didn’t move.

"I want a duel."

Aziel blinked again.

"...You what?"

"I said," Lucien repeated, his eyes cold, "I want to fight you."

Aziel tilted his head.

Not because he was scared.

Just confused.

Lucien wanting to fight him made zero sense.

He wasn’t even near the top three.

Aziel was ranked ninth — and even that felt like a stretch sometimes.

"You serious?" he asked.

Lucien didn’t flinch. "Dead serious."

"Why?"

Lucien’s voice was ice. "Because you piss me off."

Aziel stared at him. "What?"

"Your face. Your voice. The way you act. It’s all irritating. I don’t like you."

... Okay then.

Did Seles dump him or something?

"I mean... cool?" Aziel shrugged. "But I’ve got other plans."

He started to walk around him, but Lucien stepped in front again.

"Cecilia must be blind to tolerate you," Lucien said casually. "Or maybe... she’s just as trashy as you and that bastard Alden."

The air shifted.

Aziel stopped mid-step.

Slowly turned.

"...What did you just say?"

Lucien smirked. "You heard me."

"You can call me weak. Worthless. Whatever you want." Aziel’s voice dropped even more. "But don’t you dare drag them into it."

His eyes, usually warm and laid-back, turned sharp.

"You want a fight?" He said, cracking his neck. "Fine. Let’s fucking fight." freēwēbηovel.c૦m

He raised his ManaSync and tapped the screen, sending a formal duel request.

Lucien accepted without hesitation.

__

Time: 5:00 PM.

Location: Combat Hall Beta.

Ranking Duel: Confirmed.

Aziel Ignaris (Rank 9) vs Lucien Celestrian (Rank 4)

__

It was official.

The duel was set to start in fifteen minutes.

Aziel turned without another word and walked away.

No dramatic threats.

No yelling.

Just quiet fury.

He didn’t care about Lucien’s issues.

Didn’t even understand half the crap he said.

But if anyone thought they could talk shit about the people he cared about—

They were gonna learn the hard way.

__

Whispers started spreading before Aziel even reached the main hallway.

By the time he stepped outside, many students had already messaged their friend groups.

[Lucien Celestrian challenged Aziel Ignaris to a duel. No cap.]

[Lucien vs Aziel? Huh?? Ain’t Aziel dating that Cecilia chick?]

[Bro this ain’t even about rankings. This sounds personal.]

Aziel could hear murmurs, but he didn’t care.

He walked past every staring student with the same blank expression.

His fists were clenched in his pockets. Not from fear.

But because if he didn’t keep walking, he might’ve gone back and decked Lucien before the duel even started.

And that? That would be against school code.

He could handle insults. He had for years.

Aziel was the "least talented" of the top ten — the fiery idiot with nothing but guts and a big mouth.

He’d heard it all.

But the second someone mentioned Cecilia or Alden in that tone?

That was a line you didn’t cross.

Not unless you wanted a fight.

Aziel passed through the main campus and entered the Combat Wing — a training complex on the far side of campus reserved for ranked duels and evaluation matches.

He entered the building where the combat hall was situated in silence and headed towards the locker room without hesitation.

The locker room was silent.

He stripped off his academy jacket and wore his combat suit.

Tied back his hair.

Took a deep breath.

Then another.

He’s stronger than me.

Aziel reminded himself.

Still, he didn’t feel scared.

But something else pulsed under his skin.

Excitement?

Adrenaline?

Rage?

Whatever it was... it was real.

So what if I lose? he thought.

That bastard crossed the line. I’m not gonna take it sitting down.

I would at least plant a solid punch on his face.

__

Meanwhile, Lucien stood calmly in the centre of the Combat Hall, his eyes closed.

His ManaSync buzzed nonstop with messages.

[Yo wtf, why Aziel tho?]

[Bro you better crush him. He’s ranked 9, he’s not even a real threat.]

Lucien ignored all of them.

They were just some idiots. Trying to please him because of his family.

He wasn’t doing this for popularity.

Or pride.

Or even Cecilia.

This was about the quest.

The system wanted humiliation.

He would deliver.

He wasn’t planning to kill Aziel.

No.

He would tear him down—publicly.

Break the illusion that Aziel belonged in the top ranks.

Then, and only then, would he be able to earn eligibility for a contract with the ancient spirit Kael’Zin.

Lucien’s hand sparked faintly with lightning as he walked to the centre of the arena.

__

Outside the combat hall, the crowd was forming.

The combat hall was getting packed with students.

Even a few professors paused nearby, interested.

A duel between two ranked students didn’t happen every day.

Especially not one that smelled this personal.

Inside the locker room, Aziel looked at his reflection in the mirror.

No nervousness.

No fear.

Just fire in his chest.

He tapped the ManaSync again.

There were many messages from Cecilia.

But he ignored them for now.

His eyes scanned the message about the duel.

[Duel time confirmed. Participant ready status: Yes.]

He turned, grabbed his weapon — a sleek katana — and walked out.

The hallway was silent.

The arena was completely opposite.

As soon as Aziel stepped into the arena, the murmur of the crowd slammed into him like a wall.

Hundreds of voices. Whispers. Shouts. Bets being placed. Speculations flying wild.

"Isn’t that the flame guy?"

"He’s ranked ninth, right? Dude’s gonna get wrecked."

"Nah, I heard he’s been training like crazy lately."

Aziel didn’t react.

He didn’t look at anyone.

Didn’t wave, didn’t smile.

Lucien was already waiting.

Eyes calm.

Hands behind his back.

Aziel stepped onto the platform without a word.

The announcer’s voice echoed from the mana-amps above.

"Official Ranked Duel: Lucien Celestrian vs Aziel Ignaris. Begin in sixty seconds."

Aziel rolled his shoulders and stared ahead.

Alright, buddy. Let’s see if you can actually back that mouth up.
