Chubby Mommy: Scheming Daddy, Surrender Now!-Chapter 427: I Just Have to Know
Ruby Sullivan sat limply on the low bench in the entrance hall, still in her trench coat, zoning out. If she hadn’t seen Ethan Sterling with his little girlfriend tonight, she wouldn’t be feeling so terrible right now.
She wanted to give herself about ten minutes to wallow in negative energy, and then crush these awful emotions like a can and throw them into the trash, never to bother with them again.
She heard footsteps and tilted her head to see Mama Bennett. She gave a small smile and whispered, "Did I wake you?"
Mama Bennett walked over slowly, "Did you eat anything tonight? How about I make you some porridge?" She didn’t know what the party Ruby Sullivan attended was like, but she could roughly guess the kind of social scene it might be. Going out for a night at some very fancy places and not really eating enough—mostly just coming back full of drinks.
Ruby Sullivan’s heart warmed at once, "No need, I’m full." She said, starting to change her shoes, intending to take a bath and have a good sleep.
"Then I’ll go run you a hot bath," Mama Bennett said, turning to leave.
"Mama Bennett!" Ruby Sullivan called out to her, "It’s too late, you should go to bed. I can handle it myself, thanks."
Mama Bennett sighed, "I just feel for you."
"I know, and I feel for you too, so hurry up and get some sleep." Ruby Sullivan got up and gently pushed Mama Bennett on the shoulder, directing her back to her room.
Only then did Mama Bennett smile, "Alright, alright, then I won’t worry about you anymore."
They had only taken a few steps when Ruby Sullivan’s phone, left on the low bench by the entrance, started vibrating. She hurried over to check, and to her surprise, it was Ethan Sterling.
She frowned slightly but didn’t hesitate. As soon as she answered, she heard a low voice on the other end, "Open the door." Ruby Sullivan was taken aback, and the call was already disconnected.
Even though she didn’t hesitate to answer the call, it didn’t mean she could face him calmly now.
Mama Bennett saw her standing dazed at the door and, after thinking for a moment, guessed who it was outside. These two kids, both too strong-willed—so strong-willed that they would rather silently give to the other, as long as the other was well. But they would never admit it aloud.
How does that work? People’s minds are so complex, even seeing each other day and night doesn’t mean you can fully guess each other’s thoughts. You have to make things clear for the other person to understand.
During the New Year, when her youngest daughter, who had stayed abroad to work, came to see her, she gave her a big hug. She suddenly felt that the expressive ways of foreigners, which often seem embarrassing, were actually not bad. Her second young lady stayed abroad for a long time, didn’t she? How come she wasn’t influenced by the openness of foreigners?
Well, not all foreigners are that open, like Bellaza, which is a very traditional and even somewhat rigid country.
She hurried over and pulled Ruby Sullivan to the side and opened the door.
Ethan Sterling had been prepared to wait outside the door all night. When the door suddenly opened, he was somewhat surprised.
"Come in quickly, it’s cold outside," Mama Bennett warmly invited, though keeping her voice down, her enthusiasm was not at all restrained.
Ethan Sterling’s tense mood eased significantly, and his rigid features softened.
"What are you doing here?" Ruby Sullivan stood at some distance, coldly questioning him.
Mama Bennett stood between the two, continuing to mediate, giving Ethan Sterling a wink, "Are you here for my sobering soup? I’ll make a pot right away, and the both of you can have a big bowl each. After drinking it, you’ll sleep well and won’t have a headache in the morning."
She said this as she patted Ethan Sterling’s arm.
Though both Ethan Sterling and Ruby Sullivan carried a faint scent of alcohol, neither had really drunk much tonight. However, at this moment, neither was willing to clarify this fact. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Ethan Sterling smiled, saying something surprisingly heartfelt, "Thank you, Mama Bennett."
Mama Bennett was somewhat flattered, "Wait here, it won’t take long." With that, she turned to the kitchen. Passing by Ruby Sullivan, she also patted her arm.
Ruby Sullivan knew she always wished for her and Ethan Sterling to reconcile, but she didn’t know what had happened between them or that Ethan Sterling already had a girlfriend.
"Coming to your ex-wife’s house at this time, aren’t you afraid your little girlfriend will get jealous?" Just thinking that he found a new girlfriend almost ten years younger made her feel super uncomfortable.
She could lose weight, but she couldn’t bring back the years she’d lost. She didn’t even know why she felt like she had to compete, but just thinking about it made her uneasy.
Ethan Sterling frowned, "I don’t want to wake the children." Saying that, he stepped forward, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her into the room, closing the door.
Ruby Sullivan shook off his hand angrily, "Ethan Sterling, have you had enough?" From pinning her against the wall at the hotel to chasing her home at this hour, was he trying to make her feel like he hadn’t let go of anything?
Ethan Sterling couldn’t help but laugh at her inexplicable question, "Ruby Sullivan, am I playing? Then I want to ask you, have you had enough fun? Are you satisfied being surrounded by so many men right now?"
The sound of a slap cut through the air as Ruby Sullivan slapped Ethan Sterling across the face.
Ethan Sterling closed his eyes from the hit, and only after a while did he open them, looking at her coldly, mocking, "Angry from embarrassment?"
Ruby Sullivan felt her body trembling, walked around him, and opened the door, "Get out." She kept her head down, afraid that tears would spill over.
Ethan Sterling frowned slightly, his legs stiff, "Did I say anything wrong? Those things with L can be let go, flirting with T in Gallia, and as soon as you come back, you’re with Tobias Townsend? Ruby Sullivan, did you learn how to be a socialite these years abroad?"
Ruby Sullivan bit her lower lip, lifted her head, and showed a cold smile, "Yes, you blocked the Nirvana path, so I had to rely on other men to revive the company. I came back for Honey’s bone marrow. If I knew your marrow was unusable, I wouldn’t have come back with our daughter. From the start, you were just a tool in my eyes, something to be tossed when used. Is that satisfying enough for you?"
Each of her words pierced Ethan Sterling’s heart like a venomous needle. The pain in his heart far exceeded his anger for a moment, "Don’t you care about the child’s feelings when you’re so self-disrespecting?"
"You don’t need to teach me how to take care of the child, Ethan Sterling. At least I won’t leave the child with a malicious woman and make him worry about being thrown out of the house at any moment!"
Though both were trying to keep their voices down, the emotions were still getting out of control. They didn’t wake the children, but they did frighten Mama Bennett, who could tell something was wrong.
"What’s going on again?" She took Ruby Sullivan’s hand off the door, closed it, and reproached with some anger, "Do you want the children to hear you?"
Only then did Ruby Sullivan calm down, her voice hoarse, "Just leave, I don’t want to fight with you."
Ethan Sterling frowned, "What is your relationship with Tobias Townsend? And what about with T? Explain it clearly." Even if he had no right to ask, he had to. He needed to know!
