Chapter 239: Head Mistress or Wife?

Xue Cong glanced over at the servant next to her and the servant girl turned to head straight towards the kitchen.

"Have a rest first while dinner is being prepared. Both of you must be tired." She led Lin Xuan Qi to his favorite chair that looked out towards the mansion gates from the main hall.

Yue Jie followed closely behind them, but she didn’t sit and stood beside Xue Cong instead.

A cup of tea was quickly poured for him by a servant after he sat down.

He picked up the teacup and savored the comfort that the hot tea gave him.

Yue Jie then nudged at Xue Cong and gestured to the servant girl standing beside him with a teapot in her hand.

It was best to give him some peace and quiet, she thought.

Xue Cong frowned, but before she could say anything, she was brought out of the main hall by Yue Jie.

"What’s wrong?" she asked, and Yue Jie told her what had happened earlier.

"I’m sure they will recover," Xue Cong said after knowing what had happened to Sima Long and Zhang Jie.

Her mind was on the fact that Zhang Jie was pregnant.

It would be disastrous if anything happened to the child.

With the limited medical care they had in the Da Qian Dynasty, childbirth was a risky endeavor.

Miscarriages or death during delivery were very common.

Xue Cong wanted to suggest that they should cheer him up but stopped when she recalled what had happened the last time they tried to do so.

Yue Jie shook her head at her and said, "You should spend more time with Master Lin."

"Me?" Xue Cong pointed to herself and asked.

"You mustn’t forget that your priority is to serve Master Lin instead of the Clan," Yue Jie sighed and replied.

Xue Cong went silent for a moment before she nodded her head and said, "Thanks for the reminder."

She had been so busy with the matters in the mansion that she wasn’t able to spend much time with him.

In her mind, if everything ran smoothly, then Master Lin would be happy.

It was the best thing she thought that she could do for him.

Maybe she had latched onto the role of the mistress of the mansion but not the role of Lin Xuan Qi’s wife.

And now that Yue Jie had reminded her, she started to think about how she should focus more on the latter.

"Dinner is ready," the servant that went to the kitchen came back to her and said.

"I’ll inform Master Lin," Xue Cong said, and the servant girl bowed at her.

"Go," Yue Jie said with a smile.

Xue Cong turned around and walked back towards the main hall.

Inside the main hall, Lin Xuan Qi was thinking about his plan to find kelp and start the MSG business.

It will also be a great opportunity to have a break for him together with Xue Cong, Yue Jie, Yue Xin, and the others.

They have been so busy for the past week like he was.

What’s the point of cultivating and having a long life if it was all about work?

Lin Xuan Qi’s life motto has always been about working hard once so that you can enjoy the rest of your life.

"Master Lin," Xue Cong entered the main hall and sat next to him.

She glanced at him and said, "Dinner is ready and..."

Words couldn’t come out of her mouth.

Her mind went blank, and she couldn’t think of much.

Their lives had been about chores and work recently, and they didn’t have much in common to talk about other than that.

She had indeed been drifting apart from him.

Lin Xuan Qi frowned at her, not knowing what she wanted.

When he glanced around and saw that they were alone, he replied, "That’s all you wanted to say after all the set up?"

Her mouth opened, but there was nothing she could think of.

When you don’t have words, there is always the primal route.

Lin Xuan Qi thought about what he had done with Yue Jie earlier in the day.

"I must be fair to both of them," Lin Xuan Qi said to himself, and he held her hand with his left hand and wrapped her waist with his right hand.

It took Xue Cong by surprise, and she glanced around at the surroundings frantically with her eyeballs darting from left to right.

Lin Xuan Qi smiled when he saw her frantic eyes and blushed cheeks.

That was the Xue Cong he was more familiar with.

After the announcement of the marriage, she had tried to be worthy of her new status... and she had tried too hard.

"I will always prefer that demure look of yours." He got close to her and whispered into her ears.

"But I... I need to be..." Xue Cong said, but he stopped her.

"You need to be happy as my wife. You can always be yourself in front of me," Lin Xuan Qi replied.

Xue Cong nodded her head and closed her eyes not wanting to let him see the tears welling up.

She was supposed to spend time with him and comfort him, but now it was the other way round.

Master Lin was right.

All the tension gone away from her body and she leaned and relaxed onto his.

He embraced her with his arms and gave her a kiss on the cheeks.

"Thanks," he said softly.

Xue Cong glanced at him with teary eyes and wanted to say something before she heard a sound.

Growl.

His stomach growled.

Lin Xuan Qi couldn’t help himself and burst out laughing.

What bad timing it was.

Xue Cong also started smiling at what had happened.

"I think it’s best to have dinner first," she said, and they stood up.

She wanted to leave him and get to the dining hall to make sure everything was ready, but he didn’t let her.

Lin Xuan Qi held her back with his hand and said, "I’m hungry for other things too."

He said and pressed his lips onto hers.

The kiss lasted for a few moments before he finally let go of her.

Xue Cong frowned at him for the sudden attack, but she didn’t say anything.

She turned around and hurried towards the dining hall, like she used to be.

Lin Xuan Qi glanced at her figure that was getting further away from the back and smiled.
