Conquering The Game's World-Chapter 274: Nora Adams!
"...Two days from now," he said after a while, "another group is going to be branded."
The first guard grimaced.
"I just hope it’s not our turn."
After a moment, he spoke again.
"Should we... escape?"
The second guard looked at him.
"Do you think that’s even possible?"
"...."
Neither of them spoke again.
Both men sat there with grim expressions, silently worrying about their future.
Then suddenly, one of them sniffed the air.
"...Did you smell that?"
"What?"
"There’s some kind of fragrance." 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
The other guard inhaled slowly.
"...Yeah. That does smell nice."
"Where is it coming from?"
"I don’t know," the second guard said. "Maybe Miss used some new room freshener?"
While they were still talking, their eyelids began to grow heavy.
One of them yawned. Followed by the other.
Within seconds, both guards slumped back in their chairs, completely asleep.
---
Several minutes passed.
Then the two shadows reappeared.
One remained at the corner of the hallway to keep watch while the other approached the guards carefully.
After confirming that both men were deeply unconscious, he turned toward the door.
He knocked lightly.
Not once.
But three times in an unusual rhythm.
A full minute passed before a cautious female voice came from inside the room.
"...Why are you here again?"
The man who had knocked spoke in a low, hoarse voice.
"Have you thought about what we discussed earlier, Miss Nora?"
The woman behind the door was none other than Nora Adams.
The only daughter of Nick Adams, the leader of the Norwish Mafia.
For a moment, she did not respond.
Then her voice came again, carrying a complicated tone.
"...Is that man really under control?"
The man outside answered firmly.
"You should have confirmed that yourself already."
He paused briefly before continuing.
"If you still don’t believe us, you can wait until the day after tomorrow."
"...What will happen then?"
There was a hint of anxiety in Nora’s voice now.
"The Dark Magician will return," the intruder replied calmly.
"That’s when another group of mafia members will be branded with Curse Marks."
He paused slightly.
"And that’s also when you will become the next target of his control... just like your father."
"Don’t call him my father!"
The cold sharpness in Nora’s voice made the man stop for a moment.
"...I apologize," he said sincerely. "I only meant to explain the situation."
Then he added quietly,
"There isn’t much time left."
Once again, Nora fell silent.
Several seconds passed before she spoke.
"...Alright."
This time, her voice was firm.
"I accept your terms."
She didn’t try to negotiate or demand any conditions. Because she understood very well how desperate her situation had become.
At this point, cooperating with this mysterious group was the only option left to her.
"You made the right decision, Miss Nora," the man said with clear satisfaction.
"I assure you that this choice will change your life for the better."
"We’ll see," Nora replied calmly.
Before anything actually changed, promises meant nothing.
"When will you act?" she asked.
"In two days," the man answered. "When the Dark Magician appears again."
"Are you sure about this?"
Nora’s tone was doubtful.
"If that man is cornered, he might detonate all the Curse Marks on the mafia members."
Her voice grew tense.
"If that happens, everyone branded with those marks will die."
"Then even if I’m rescued, our agreement will become meaningless."
"Don’t worry," the man replied confidently.
"We’re prepared."
He added another sentence.
"Our boss has said that even if the Norwish Mafia is completely destroyed... You must still be saved."
"Because your value is far greater."
Nora let out a quiet laugh.
"Even I don’t have that much confidence in myself."
Then she added thoughtfully,
"Your boss sounds like an interesting person."
"I’d like to meet him."
"You will," the man replied.
"In two days."
After discussing a few more details regarding her role in the plan, the two infiltrators quietly left the building the same way they had entered.
---
Later, they returned to a small room.
Inside, they activated the mana bracelet and made a call.
A holographic figure appeared before them.
The man had blue hair and a small scar near his right eye.
"Captain Jack," both men greeted immediately.
Yes. This person was none other than Jack.
And the two infiltrators were Dellard and Matt—the undercover agents Luis had asked Jack to place inside the Norwish Mafia.
["How is the mission proceeding?"] Jack asked calmly.
"We’ve convinced Nora Adams to cooperate with us," Dellard reported. "Although she still doesn’t trust us completely."
["That’s normal,"] Jack replied. ["Leave the psychological work to Master Luis."]
["What about the rest?"]
Dellard continued.
"At the port base alone, there are over two hundred mafia members branded with Curse Marks."
Matt added,
"And we’ve discovered that members from almost all major criminal organisations in Selvas City carry the marks."
Jack’s brow furrowed slightly.
That number was higher than expected.
After a brief pause, he spoke again.
["Continue laying low until the time of action."]
Matt hesitated before asking,
"Captain... what if we’re forced to accept the Curse Marks as well?"
["Play along,"] Jack replied calmly.
["We can’t alert the enemy prematurely."]
["Our intelligence suggests he has several unusual escape methods."]
["We must be completely prepared to capture him in one decisive strike."]
["These are Master Luis’s orders."]
Dellard nodded.
"Captain... will Master Luis personally participate in the mission?"
["Are you worried about his safety?"] Jack asked.
"Yes," Dellard admitted. "Master Luis is a genius, but he hasn’t grown to the level of a powerhouse yet."
["There’s no need to worry,"] Jack replied. ["He has sufficient safety measures."]
Then he added,
["Focus on your mission. Once it’s completed, there will be rewards prepared for both of you."]
With that, the hologram vanished.
Matt looked at Dellard.
"What do you think the reward will be?"
Dellard shrugged.
"Who knows?"
Then he said seriously,
"But stop thinking about rewards for now. If this mission fails, we might lose even our resources."
Matt nodded.
"Yeah. You’re right."
