Chapter 78: dire consequences

Alexander spent the entire day walking and by night fall, he not yet arrived to the place where the compass was leading him.

He had tactfully hidden from three troll giants and a suspicious wanderer along the way and by the time Alexander set up his tent to retire for the night, he was exhausted and cold.

He couldn’t light a fire for fear of drawing unwanted attention so Alexander wrapped his thin blanket around himself and tried to get some sleep.

Using a simple magic spell he had learned, Alexander cast a protective spell around his tent, one that could alert him if any creatures got too close.

Knowing he wasn’t really safe, he slept lightly and never let himself slip into a deep slumber and six hours into the night, Alexander’s eyes snapped open at the slightest movement outside.

His barrier has been breached and Alexander carefully got out of his tent, hands on his sword and ready to fight if he needed to.

"A clumsy spell." Alexander found himself looking at a strange man whose skin was much paler than what was considered normal for a human.

He looked like he was in his late twenties and Alexander didn’t like the fact that his silver hair was the exact same shade as Damon’s.

The stranger’s piercing blue eyes held a hunger that made Alexander frown as he took out his sword and held it firmly.

The man was looking at him like he was food.

"My sword fighting skills are not like my magic so don’t come any closer if you still want to live." Alexander threatened and the weird man smirked, revealing a pair of sharp canines.

Alexander felt his pulse quicken as he realized what creature he was dealing with.

He had heard of vampires, the blood sucking predators that were notoriously rare but he had never encountered one.

"You are a vampire." Alexander noted, his eyes alert for any sudden movements. Apparently these creatures had superhuman speed and he didn’t want to be caught off guard.

"And you are a wizard. I really hate your kind." The vampire drawled and Alexander’s fingers tightened around his sword.

"I do not plan on becoming you next meal." Alexander assured and the man flashed him a devilish smile as he inhaled sharply only for his smile to fade as his brows furrowed slightly in thought, as if he was trying to recall a distant memory.

"You smell like him." The vampire’s frown deepened and Alexander was totally lost.

What was this man talking about?

"What?" He asked, not letting his guard down even though the vampire has stopped looking at him like he was a meal.

His eyes now held a curiousity that worried Alexander.

"You have Damon Ashford’s scent on you." The vampire added and Alexander’s possessiveness over his fiance burned as he glared at the vampire.

"How do you know Damon?" He asked and the vampire smiled wearily, pain lingering in his blue eyes.

"He is family. My nephew to be exact." The vampire replied and Alexander was now curious.

"Wait, who are you?" He asked as his mind registered the vampire’s striking resemblance to Damon.

"Ebenezer Ashford." The vampire replied and Alexander’s eyes widened slightly in both surprise and shock.

If this man wasn’t lying, that made him the current king’s elder brother who had died twenty two years ago.

Something wasn’t adding up here.

"Aren’t you supposed to be dead?" Alexander asked skeptically and the vampire grimaced slightly.

"I am dead. You can’t become a vampire without dying." The man replied and numerous questions flooded Alexander’s mind.

"It’s a long story. Now put your sword away

Whatever relationship you have with my nephew has ensured that I am no longer a threat to you. Do you know my family well?" The vampire asked and Alexander reluctantly put his sword away but his eyes were still alert as he looked the man who was genuinely curious.

"Well enough." Alexander admitted, his mind still processing all that was happening.

"How is Sebastian?" Ebenezer asked, thinking of his younger brother that must have been devastated after his death on his twenty fifth birthday.

"He is well and he is the king now." Alexander replied, wondering why the man was asking him such questions. Couldn’t he just go to the castle and check on his family?

"And Damon? I left when he was just three." Ebenezer remembered his nephew’s chubby cheeks and it pained him that Damon was going to face a fate that was similar to his own in a few weeks’ time.

"Damon is fine as well." Alexander answered.

"Did my brother have anymore children? Ebenezer was curious.

"Yes, two twin daughters and another son. Wait, how don’t you know all of this?" Alexander was now truly baffled and he hoped the vampire’s explanation made sense.

Ebenezer sighed softly as he recalled the night of his twenty fifth birthday, twenty three years back.

He had made his peace with his impending doom and Sebastian, his younger brother by a year had not left his side for a second when he fell into a coma a day before his birthday.

Ebenezer had thought it was going to be the end but his deep slumber, he had received a visit from an unwanted visitor.

The golden eyed wizard that had cursed his family had approached him with an offer to let him live.

Ebenezer, who had not known that there could be dire consequences, had taken the the offer hoping that he could get to stay with his family.

Instead, he had woken up two days later, trapped in a coffin with no way out until Silas, the wizard that was now his greatest enemy had dug him out.

The golden eyed wizard had then read out the consequences of the deal he took.

He was dead to his family and he was to remain that way. He was also banned from the kingdom and he could have live on blood for the rest of his immortal existence.

Ebenezer had been wrecked and he had tried to get the wizard to reverse whatever he had done to him but Silas had just offered him a pitiful smile and disappeared, leaving him alone to grapple with his new found identity.

The major reason Ebenezer had wanted to live was so that his family didn’t have to go through the pain of mourning his death but Silas had ripped that from him and so had sworn to spend most of his life tracking down the wizard so that he could get his revenge.

He had not yet found him but he was far from giving up.

"It’s the curse on my family. Silas, the wizard responsible, tricked me into a life where I could no longer be able to contact my family." Ebenezer replied and Alexander was stunned into momentary silence.
