Crushing flags and claiming the Villainess-Chapter 103 - 102- Assessing the situation
The capital of Drenovar was quite vast. There were three sections of the main town—the first section was where all the hotels, public amenities, and the main market were situated.
This area was dedicated to the tourists who often visit Drenovar to enjoy the local culture and the delicious food of the country.
Then there was the next section which was in the middle—the main town where regular people live. The houses here were mostly two or three storeys, and their condition was quite good as well.
Austin has heard that even an average earning person could afford a house in the town, however, there was one condition—at least one of their family members must be working for the capital.
Then, the least populated and the most silent section of the Capital, where the nobles reside.
The houses here were more like villas, situated at random spots, unlike the houses for commoners which were lined up on either side of the street
The houses of nobles are situated according to their desire, and later routes are paved to reach the mansion.
It is usually the silent and posh area of the Capital, however, it was currently under the shades of chaos.
Reason? Hellstain.
In the middle of the noble’s district was where most of the soldiers gathered.
The red glaring mark that appeared a few days ago has been spewing savage demons one after another.
"It looks like it’s pulsating..." Valerie murmured as they stood at the top of the nearby house and surveilled the situation.
It was a dark long mark, trailing down from one of the villa’s middle, and spreading into several roots after reaching the ground.
The Hellstain gave the sensation of being alive, with its shade brightening up like a beating heart, and then the illumination dimming a little.
There were numerous soldiers from the Drenovar side, some were barricading the area.
Some were on the other side of the barricade; fighting the demons that appeared once in a while.
"They can’t send a huge force at once..." Austin muttered, "The blood of the Demon Lord affects the soldiers, corrupting their minds and making them insane."
Valerie added, "That explains why they have put so many soldiers behind the barricade. But does being near the demons affect them?"
Austin shook his head, "If one gets scratched from them or consumes their blood, then yeah, something disastrous would take place."
They can’t even risk launching a long-range attack and destroying the stain since that would scatter the blood, and the whole capital might get affected because of that.
"Here comes another," Valerie voiced as she saw a gruesome figure emerging from the stain, changing its form and rising from the darkness.
The demon was unlike the one they faced back in the academy. Those demons had sanity and could talk like humans.
However, these demons were pure savages.
They moved on to their instincts of hunting humans. Like the one they were witnessing right now, charged toward the nearest soldier even though it had yet to completely get out of its cocoon of blood.
Austin saw the soldier jumping back in panic and shooting an arrow toward the demon—
**BOOOOM**
The arrow stabbed the demon and exploded—must be an effect of the Shard—which caused the blood of the demon soldier to scatter.
"Gaaaaaahh!"
"You idiot!"
"Shit! It-aghhhhhh!"
The nearby soldiers had to protect themselves from the scattered blood, but some of them were caught in it, resulting in severe burns on their armor and skin.
"They are....amateur..." Valerie muttered in disappointment, seeing a soldier panicking in the face of threat and taking down his comrades too.
Austin heaved a sigh; the pace of the demon was too high, and the soldiers did what was ingrained in their instincts: use their Shard.
However, as Valerie uttered, that was a foolish decision.
"And the worst part....the demon is still alive." Austin sighed, as he saw the destroyed upper body of the demon was regaining the form by absorbing more blood from the stain.
It was completely a horror sight to witness. The demon was nothing but blood—shifting, writhing, pulsing like a living wound. Its form never stayed still, twisting and stretching as if it was barely holding itself together.
Thick, dark-red liquid dripped from its body, pooling beneath it, yet it never seemed to run dry.
"Why are the council members here when they aren’t even trying to help?"
Valerie questioned; she had spotted numerous council members earlier when they were advancing toward the stain.
However, around the site, there were no council members that could be seen.
"If my knowledge serves right, then I think near the end of this whole chaos, a huge beast of high ranking is spewed out of the Stain—and defeating that would mean getting rid of the stain."
Austin remembers that when the Demon Lord returned, all the Stains came alive, spilling hundreds of demons and demon bosses at once and throwing the human domain into chaos.
However, since humanity isn’t in a state of war, this situation would be handled much more calmly.
"So, Val. Tell me what we should do?" Austin asked as he sat down on the nearby chair.
Valerie felt nervous...was this a test?
After she carefully considered the situation, she decided, "We should infiltrate the palace before the last demon arrives."
Austin raised his brows, "But won’t we risk exposing ourselves to the council members who are around the palace?"
"But we don’t have that much time either. As Sebastian said, this could take over a month."
Austin hummed, with his head moving in assent.
Valerie thought for a moment before adding, "And there is a high chance that the Council members would defeat the last one right away; not leaving us with enough time to reach our goal."
Austin moved his head slightly from left to right."That is correct. Let’s discuss it with Sebastian and make a plan."
Before Austin could have jumped off the building, Valerie hurriedly asked, "Did I pass the test?"
Austin was taken aback, as he turned to look at the girl and found her looking at him in anxiety.
’It can’t be ...so she was thinking that I was testing her?’ Austin barely controlled himself from chuckling.
Seeing that expectant gaze, he couldn’t help but softly caress the girl’s head and say, "Yes, you passed."
"Eheh~" Valerie closed her eyes and enjoyed the touch.
She was helpful to her lord~So happy~
