Chapter 29: Men in black and cursed Intimidation 2

Soon, the radiance stopped intensifying. Instead, it gradually faded away.

But as it disappeared, their bodies grew even weaker. The trembling worsened.

As for me, the sudden surge of power was too much. My consciousness slipped away, and I collapsed on my cradle, completely spent.

The black-robed men remained frozen, their bodies trembling as an inexplicable terror gripped them. Their minds and pounding hearts felt tightly strung, paralyzed by a fear so deep it drained all their strength.

Finally, their trembling soon legs gave out.

They fell heavily onto the wooden floor trembling non stop, as they landed hard on their backsides with a loud, echoing thud.(previous Chapter)

As we were on our way back to the house—Elina, Ada, and I—we suddenly heard a cry. A high-pitched cry.

At first, we couldn’t tell what it was. It seemed like a baby was crying, however, in the next moment it wasn’t just crying, but loud screaming. The sound was loud, sharp, piercing straight through the surrounding. For a moment, confusion froze us in place. Then fear took over.

We all began to run.

Our thoughts spiraled wildly as our legs pushed harder against the ground, running like a couple of mad men on the loose. Every possibility and worst case scenario raced through our mind, each worse than the last.

We felt our chest tightened as panic clawed its way up our minds. Elina and Ada were no better—Elina’s eyes fluttered rapidly, red and glassy, tears threatening to spill at any second.

As the man of the family, I tried to steady them, to say something comforting, but my own heart was hammering too violently. I couldn’t stop thinking about the children. About what we might be running back to.

When the house finally came into view, I felt as though my heart was clenched tightly.

The door was open.

The first thing I saw was Gustav. He was lying on his side near the entrance, shivering uncontrollably. His pants were soaked, and his face was so pale it barely looked alive.

For a split second, fear rooted me to the spot—but then instinct kicked in. Elina and I rushed inside while Ada stayed behind to check on him.

Elina couldn’t calm down. Not yet. Not until she knew her little baby, and daughter, were safe.

My heart felt like it was lodged in my throat as we moved deeper into the house. Then I saw them.

My heart quivered not once. Twice.

Two men lay on the floor, dressed in black robes with their hoods still on. Their bodies were shaking—no, quivering—like leaves caught in a storm.

For a moment, I couldn’t react. My mind struggled to make sense of the sight. Why were they here? What had they been looking for?

I think I already knew the answer, but my mind just didn’t want to come to terms with reality and that realization made my blood boil. But something else bothered me too—what had happened to them?

Elina didn’t hesitate. She rushed straight to Ragna, fear written all over her face. I watched her hands tremble as she touched him, checking every inch.

Relief flickered through her eyes when she realized he hadn’t been hurt. Still, he was cold, sweaty, and unnaturally quiet, his face pale in a way that made her chest ache.

My fists clenched on their own.

Rage flooded me so fast I could almost see it. If looks could kill, the two men on the floor would already be corpses. I forced myself to breathe, deep and slow, swallowing the rage burning in my chest. Losing control wouldn’t help my family. I thought 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

I stepped closer to the men.

Up close, their shaking was even worse than I had thought. Their bodies trembled violently, as if something had utterly horrified them to the point of totally breaking their mental state. Part of me wanted to hit them—just once, just enough to release what was boiling inside me—then drag them straight to the village officers.

When my hand touched one of them, he flinched hard.

I paused. Was he pretending? Or was he truly terrified?

I grabbed one of the hooded figures and turned him to face me. He fidgeted under the hood, letting out strange, muffled murmurs. I crouched down, leaning in closer to hear him.

What he said barely made sense.

"The... child... strange... he is ... beyond... a demon."

That was it, I straightened, my jaw tight. They were insane—or pretending to be. Either way, I didn’t believe a word of it. Suspicion crept in instead. This felt staged. Planned, too convenient.

The villagers who hated my family... had they put this together? Had someone tipped these men off, told them exactly when we wouldn’t be home? And if they truly believed such nonsense, why hadn’t they taken the children with them?

Nothing added up, I had lived in this village my whole life. I was born here, married here, raised my children here. I had never made enemies, never picked fights. I had always kept my head down and my temper in check.

So why us? My breath caught as countless helpless theories crashed through my mind. In the end, I forced myself to stop thinking. Acting rashly would only make things worse.

I stepped back.

For now, I wouldn’t touch them again.

This was bigger than me. Bigger than my anger.

They would be handed over to the village head, and this would be dealt with properly—severely. Whatever punishment awaited them had to be enough to ensure that something like this would never happen to my family again.
