Deceiving Her Ears: Ignoring Your Call-Chapter 115: Damn! Second Master Vaughn, What’s Wrong With You?
The person was touching her.
Natalie Kendall abruptly opened her eyes.
Before she could scream, she saw who it was.
So she held the sound back at the base of her tongue.
Moonlight spilled in.
Mia’s Grandmother smiled lovingly at Natalie Kendall, her rough and shriveled hand gently stroking her belly.
Suddenly, Natalie’s eyes welled up.
After a while of stroking, Mia’s Grandmother suddenly pulled an egg out of her pocket.
She stuffed it into Natalie’s palm, gesturing at her mouth with her hand, "Eat, eat."
To her, eggs were the best, most nutritious thing.
She thought Natalie needed to eat.
Natalie didn’t want to refuse Mia’s Grandmother’s good intention, so she sat up, peeled the egg, and ate it.
Mia’s Grandmother saw her eating and showed a joyful and comforting smile.
"Grandma? Grandma?"
At this moment, Mia’s voice came from outside, looking for her.
Mia’s Grandmother quickly got off the bed and went outside.
"Grandma? Why did you go to that room?"
Mia hurriedly took her grandma back to bed.
Inside the room.
Natalie lay down again.
The raw taste of the egg lingered on her tongue, uncomfortable, but she did not regret eating it.
——
The next morning, the villagers came with the village chief to collect supplies.
Besides daily necessities, they brought many books.
Initially, Lucas Lowell couldn’t understand why they wasted space to pack books, but Mia insisted then.
Now, it seemed her insistence was right.
Natalie Kendall and Lucas Lowell could never forget the expressions on those children’s faces as they held and carefully opened the books.
"Cough! When I go back, I’ll have five truckloads, no, ten truckloads of books sent over!" Lucas hugged Mia, "I might as well donate a library! Wooden girl, what do you think?"
Mia tried to suppress the urge to roll her eyes and replied, "Thank you for your kindness, Mr. Lowell. But there isn’t even a school here, so a library isn’t necessary."
"If there’s no school, let’s build one! I’ll pay for it!" Lucas patted his chest.
Natalie came over and said, "Count me in."
Lucas’s eyes lit up, he chuckled, "Sure, let’s collaborate. Natalie Kendall, don’t you think we’re a great match? I feel like we can accomplish many things together, don’t you think?"
Natalie didn’t answer, and turned to continue overseeing the distribution of supplies.
This was a trial run, so they didn’t bring much, and it was soon distributed.
The accompanying staff took many photos as material, intending to write articles after returning.
He came over to show Natalie the photos, but Natalie told him to choose himself and went to find Mia, saying she wanted to explore around.
Mia then took her for a walk around the village.
Originally, they planned to stay another night and return to Janton the next day.
But no one expected a sudden downpour after dinner.
The rain was pouring down as if someone was dumping water from the sky.
Lucas hunched his shoulders, sitting on a stool eating roasted potatoes, worriedly asking Mia, "Wooden girl, is your roof solid? It won’t leak, will it?"
"It won’t. The roof was just repaired last year."
Lucas said that’s good and took a big bite of the potato, hissing from the heat.
"Something’s wrong, something’s wrong!"
Suddenly, Mia’s Dad came in from outside, wearing a raincoat but still soaked through.
Mia’s Mom quickly got him a towel.
Mia asked, "Dad, what’s wrong?"
"The road!" Mia’s Dad wiped his face with the towel, "The road is blocked! The heavy rain washed away the road down the mountain!"
Upon hearing this, Lucas jumped up from his stool, "What do we do? Can we still leave tomorrow?"
Mia’s Dad shook his head, "Definitely can’t go."
Lucas’s face immediately fell, and the potato in his hand no longer tasted good.
Natalie slightly frowned, went back to get her phone, intending to call Isaac Vaughn to explain the situation, but unexpectedly found there was no signal.
No need to guess; it’s because of the rainstorm.
She sat on the bed, holding her phone, listening to the rain beating against the window, feeling a bit agitated inside.
"Miss Kendall."
Mia came to find her.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah."
"Miss Kendall, I’m really sorry," Mia apologized.
If she hadn’t chosen this place, this wouldn’t have happened.
"It’s not your fault. The weather is something no one can predict."
Mia slightly relaxed, saying, "Miss Kendall, once the rain stops, the village will go and fix the road."
*
But no one expected the rain to last two whole days and nights.
Natalie Kendall and Lucas Lowell were stuck at Mia’s house, unable to leave the house.
Because of the rainstorm, they couldn’t access the internet on their phones.
Lucas was bored and kept scratching his head.
He eventually found some fun, playing cards with Mia’s Dad and Mia’s Mom.
Mia heard him making a ruckus in the card game, her eyes nearly rolling back into her head.
Compared to him, Natalie was much quieter.
She took a book and would read the whole day.
Except for meals, she hardly left the room.
Occasionally, Mia’s Grandmother would come to the room where she was.
Mia discovered this and worried her grandmother would disturb Natalie.
But when she went to find her grandmother, she saw her sitting beside Natalie.
Her grandmother’s hand gently lay on Natalie’s belly, and Natalie’s expression showed no sign of annoyance.
Mia quietly turned to leave.
On the third day, the rain finally stopped.
Mia said the villagers were repairing the road, but it would take time.
Natalie Kendall and Lucas Lowell waited another three days.
On the evening of the sixth day they were trapped in the mountains.
After dinner, Lucas wanted to start another card game.
He took the book from Natalie’s hand, not letting her read it, "Reading this all the time is boring. Come and play cards with us."
Natalie replied expressionlessly and quietly, "Give me back the book."
"Tsk," Lucas directly reached out and pulled her out of the room.
Natalie frowned and tried to snatch the book from Lucas’s hand.
Lucas, tall with long arms, held it up, out of her reach.
Natalie lost her patience, her expression turning cold.
Lucas, seeing her demeanor, quickly returned the book to her, apologizing ingratiatingly, "My bad, don’t be angry. I just think it’s boring for you to be alone and want to include you in the fun. Really, don’t be mad."
Just as Natalie was about to say something, a deep male voice suddenly sounded.
She almost thought she was hearing things.
Until Lucas exclaimed, "What the hell, Second Master Vaughn, why are you like this?"
Natalie then realized the person before her was indeed Isaac Vaughn.
He was entirely like a mud person, filthy all over, with bloodshot eyes and stubble on his chin, looking extremely disheveled.
