Deceiving Her Ears: Ignoring Your Call-Chapter 17: Pinned Against the Wall, Unable to Escape
"Baby? Did you hear what Mommy just said?"
Isaac held his phone up in front of his eyes, the call had already been hung up.
His eyes flickered slightly. He put away his phone, "You like her, then you marry her."
Vanessa was so angry she laughed, and pulled Jessica into her arms: "You think Mommy wouldn’t want to? If Mommy were a man, you wouldn’t stand a chance. Isn’t that right, Jessica?"
Jessica replied with a sweet smile, "If Auntie were a guy, I’d definitely choose Auntie."
While coaxing Vanessa into a fit of joy, Jessica snuck a look at Isaac.
Her family had immigrated, so she hadn’t seen him for more than ten years.
Seeing him again this time, she fell for him instantly.
After all, with a face like Isaac Vaughn’s, it’s hard for anyone not to feel something.
And Auntie Grant liked her, too.
She was set on getting into a relationship with Isaac Vaughn.
The three of them came out of the restaurant, and the driver drove over.
Isaac, ever the gentleman, opened the car door for the two ladies.
After Vanessa got in, she blocked Jessica from getting in, "It’s still early, you young people should go hang out for a bit."
She gave her son a secretive look.
But Isaac said he had things to do.
"Maybe next time." Jessica could see his mind was elsewhere, so she sensibly got in the car with Vanessa and left.
——
Natalie came back home after 11 pm.
She glanced at the apartment across the hall, then unlocked her own door and went in.
Jason wasn’t home.
After her shower, she’d just crawled into bed when the doorbell rang.
Isaac appeared, dressed in a deep blue bathrobe, one arm leaned against the doorframe, looking at her: "Weren’t you hungry for pasta?"
He’d literally run back home to cook for her, and she’d just pulled a disappearing act.
Natalie lifted her eyelids to glance at him, her voice flat: "I’m not hungry anymore."
Isaac was so mad he laughed, and walked past her into the apartment.
"What are you doing?" Natalie was startled, frowned, and followed him in.
"Too bad my uncle’s not home."
He turned around, stretched his long arms, and pulled her into his embrace, leaning down close to her ear, "But it’s fine. You can call me whatever you want."
Natalie’s face was cold as she pushed him away, "I don’t want to."
"But I do."
Isaac picked her up and carried her to the bedroom.
Natalie found herself pinned face to face on the bed. She turned her head to avoid his kiss, "Who’s Jessica?"
So she’d heard after all.
He purposely said, "She’s my childhood friend. Used to be a little clown with braces, but she grew up and turned out kind of pretty."
He paused, then bit Natalie’s ear, "But she’s not as curvy as you. Her boobs aren’t as big, her legs aren’t as long."
Natalie didn’t feel flattered at all.
"Your mom likes her a lot."
Catching the jealousy in her tone, Isaac kissed her neck, his hand searching to undo her pajamas.
He teased on purpose: "Yeah, my mom does like her, wants to set us up. But isn’t marriage law only for one spouse? If not, the three of us should get married together. That’d be a riot."
Natalie’s eyes turned red bit by bit, silent tears streaming down.
When her tears wet Isaac’s face, he was surprised and held himself up with his arms on either side of her.
"You..."
"Isaac Vaughn, you asshole!"
Natalie shoved him hard off to the side, grabbed the pillow and started whacking him all over.
"Get out! I never want to see you again!"
Isaac clicked his tongue, then pounced and wrapped her up, pillow and all. "I was just kidding."
Natalie bit her lip, eyes red.
She wondered why she was ever attracted to someone as damned as Isaac Vaughn.
She knew he wasn’t a good guy.
But if she had to trust her body and heart to just one person, the first and only choice that came to mind was him.
But that didn’t change the fact that Isaac was such a jerk.
"I won’t marry you. And forget what I said about us being friends or anything else."
"What do you mean?"
Hearing Natalie’s words, Isaac’s face darkened.
——
Isaac slammed the door and left.
Natalie stayed up till morning, unable to sleep.
Luckily there was no 8-am class today.
After getting ready and taking the bus to school, she saw Isaac’s social post from the day before.
A plate of pasta, beautifully presented.
If things hadn’t gone sideways, she would’ve eaten that pasta last night.
Staring at the photo, her finger slipped and she accidentally liked it.
Startled, she quickly tried to remove her like.
But when she went to delete it, she found the post was gone.
After double-checking, she realized Isaac had deleted the post.
Did he see her like and delete it because of that?
Natalie turned off her phone, her heart heavy.
Morning classes ended, and she still had one after lunch, so Natalie planned to eat in the cafeteria.
A few figures appeared in front of her: the vice president, the head of academic affairs, and the head of the Foreign Languages department.
They were accompanying two people—one was Vanessa Grant, the other was that girl called Jessica.
"Nat?"
Vanessa spotted Natalie immediately, eyes bright with surprise and delight, and pulled her close affectionately.
"Why are you here? Oh, that’s right, you’re at Seaharbor University."
Vanessa then introduced Jessica to her, saying Jessica was transferring to Seaharbor soon, and today was just for getting familiar with the place.
"Nat, since you’re at Seaharbor, once Jessica comes, you can look out for each other. Let’s all have dinner tonight, get to know each other properly."
Vanessa gave Natalie no chance to decline, settling everything warmly, so she could only agree.
Dinner was booked at a private cuisine place—fancy setting, good food.
"She’s Jason’s fiancée?!"
During the chit-chat, Jessica heard Vanessa mention Natalie’s status and was genuinely shocked.
Natalie was even two years younger than her.
"Just got engaged." Vanessa took Jessica’s hand and teased, "Jason’s Isaac’s uncle. If you call him Jason, doesn’t that mess up the family seniority between you and Isaac?"
Jessica shyly smiled, "Then from now on..."
"From now on, just call him Uncle Jason like Isaac does."
Vanessa was clearly laying it on thick—she was more than satisfied with Jessica.
Jessica wasn’t the type to play coy, so she accepted happily.
She looked at Natalie, smiled, and said, "So by seniority, I should call you Auntie Jason?"
Natalie was caught off guard.
Just then, the private dining room door opened, and a low male voice came in: "Who are you calling Auntie Jason?"
"Isaac!" Jessica’s eyes lit up instantly upon seeing him.
A girl’s crush is crystal clear, no holding back at all.
Isaac’s gaze landed on Natalie’s face, then coolly shifted away.
Vanessa said, "Of course it’s Natalie! She’s your uncle’s fiancée, so Jessica calling her Auntie Jason is right."
Isaac’s eyes flashed cold for a second.
He was about to speak when a muted female voice said to Jessica, "Call me whatever you want."
Isaac chuckled, though not really with his eyes.
Jessica glanced at Isaac, but she was sharp—her relationship with Isaac wasn’t figured out yet.
So she stuck out her tongue: "Just kidding."
Once Isaac sat down, Vanessa pressed a button under the table, and the waiter quickly came in with the dishes.
Natalie had only had a few bites before her phone rang. She apologized and stepped outside to answer it.
When she finished her call and came back, Isaac was waiting and grabbed her, dragging her into a corner of the hallway.
"You really love being ’my uncle’s fiancée’?"
"You really like being called Auntie Jason?"
He was intense and intimidating; Natalie was trapped against the wall with nowhere to run.
"You don’t care who calls you that?"
"So what about me?"
"You don’t care if I say it either?"
