For some unknown reason, that was the first thought that surfaced inside Alex’s mind, one that felt all too complementary to his current situation.

And in that same moment, he had finally done the unthinkable, with light pouring in at a 90-degree angle up to the roof of the inn he’ll now be staying at.

Alex didn’t remember speaking with Cassie about it, but he gave her a gold coin. And that alone would probably last him for an entire year.

’A year staying under Cassie’s housing,’ Alex thought, ’I wouldn’t mind that.’

Once that happened, the grey wolf that was handing Alex a paw a second ago now disappeared into nothingness.

No particles remained, the light originally flushing the ceiling gone, and everything now became hollow, no particular sound or noise to be heard.

"Well done," Victor’s voice appeared after the completion of the quest, "You’re very charismatic, if I do say so myself."

"Not enough for the academy if I’m being honest," Alex responded, "But for now, this’ll do."

"How the fuck?" Victor pondered out loud, "Are all academy students fucking geniuses? Back in Noctra, they used more strength than brains, other than a chosen few, of course."

"Well, the Demon-Empire must be completely different. On Ashtar, we have rankings of families. The higher your rank usually means the more intelligent your ’kid’ will turn out to be."

"Ranks? Thought that was only placed for beasts, demons and humans." Victor said, "Didn’t know it applied to families as well."

"Well," Alex paused, "Think of it like degrees. The lower your family’s degree number, the higher its ranking, dependent on how much help it gives to society."

"Cool, cool," Victor added, "So, what degree are you?"

"Well, an aristocrat’s blood dwells within me, and the Thorn bloodline was placed as a second-degree family."

"I see, I see, how many degrees are there?"

"It scales up to 5+, if you’re put into that category, however, you’re cast out by society, not expected to benefit Ashtar whatsoever. The highest ever scaled fifth degree was an A-Rank."

"That isn’t bad, though, because Cassie was happy to obtain a C-Rank beast."

Alex sat on his bed, "Maybe for her, that’s impressive. But you haven’t seen the truth behind Beast-Fall Capital."

His gaze darkened as Victor’s interest skyrocketed.

"Well, tell me, tell me, you’ve got me intrigued."

"I rather show you than tell you," Alex announced, "Anyways, let’s see what this baby could do."

It was clearly getting dark, and soon, it would probably be his bedtime. Not that he had one, but his body most definitely did.

He put his hand in the air for just a second, then called out the following.

"Cool," Alex whispered, "So while others use mana as their power source, I’m able to use ’Demonic Energy’ instead. It seems reliable enough."

"Do you have a mana core?" Victor asked politely.

"Well, no, and that’s why my reputation was tarnished. Though you only need ’mana’ to perform skills, your beast could still be crazy overpowered while you’re weak." Alex responded.

"Why not expand it? That’s what I heard back home."

"If you don’t awaken a mana core by birth, you can’t evolve. You can only ever evolve your mana core up until the rank of your given beast. To do that, you have to strengthen your bonds and shit like that." Alex added, exhaling calmly.

"Oh, well, Demon Energy doesn’t work like that..."

"How do you know?"

"Because I’m a demon," Victor added.

"But you’ve never met someone who can really expand on that concept, have you? What if I changed your teachings and gave new birth to this energy you use?"

Victor stopped talking, then he chuckled lightly, "I wanna see you try it."

"Bet."

Alex had finally been able to unlock it, a tamer rank like no one else, one that meant something deeply.

He was now one step closer to bringing that pressure onto Htrae.

While others are playing checkers, Alex himself was now playing chess.
