Chapter 54: Problem

Itai walked inside. There was a large hall made of white stone, decorated with golden stripes. Many warriors were moving around, talking, chatting, or waiting in line. At the end of the hall, there were five reception windows with a rather long queue.

On the left was a room where quests posted by others were accepted. It clearly stated what was required from the adventurer, the stage they should be on, the reward, how many adventurers were needed, and approximately how long it would take.

On the right was another room with a long counter running along one wall. There, monster corpses were collected, assessed for their condition, stage, and what materials could be extracted from them. Finally, the adventurer would be given an appropriate reward. In this section of the Adventurers’ Guild, Itai had previously sold those corpses in the last town.

This Adventurers’ Guild looked completely different from the ones he had been to before. In the city, the Adventurers’ Guild looked much smaller, less majestic, and was made of stone. In his hometown, the Adventurers’ Guild resembled a large tavern rather than a proper guild.

Itai waited in line, and after a while, he stood at the counter. On the other side stood a young receptionist with long dark blue hair and a tired expression.

"How can I help you?" she asked.

"I would like to become an adventurer," Itai said.

The girl gave him a thorough look. "Do you have 10 gold coins for the registration fee?" she asked.

Itai scratched his head with a nervous smile. "Could I possibly pay it later?" he asked.

"No, next," she said.

"Don’t worry, I’ll pay you, just please—" Itai tried to protest, but a guy behind him pushed him aside.

"Heh, don’t take your life lightly and don’t hold up others," the guy said.

Itai walked out of the Adventurers’ Guild, defeated. He pondered how he could get the needed money because he definitely wouldn’t beg—he had his pride. Also, there were many strong men in the center, and Itai felt that if he angered one of them, he wouldn’t stand a chance.

Theoretically, he could go work somewhere, but finding a job and earning 10 gold would take some time. Itai would definitely go consult with Flain since he might come up with something.

As Itai headed home, he glanced at the Palace of the Emperor of Light. The palace was enormous, as big as a city, and looked as if it were made entirely of gold. Itai couldn’t even imagine how unimaginably wealthy the Emperor of Light must be.

The palace had large windows with golden frames, each depicting the symbol of light—a circle with a swirling vortex of light. In front of the gate stood the grand symbol of the empire—a circle with an inner swirling light vortex that rotated very slowly, as if demonstrating the eternal motion of light. However, Itai didn’t see much more because he was still quite far away.

Flain’s Perspective:

Flain had just finished his last hour of training.

[+500 EXP]

"So, the EXP from warrior training increases, because earlier I got 150 EXP. This disproves my worry that warrior training would become useless in the future," Flain thought.

Flain was about to try creating a spell again when he sensed someone’s magical energy above him. Flain knew it was Itai because, after spending some time with someone, he memorized their ME, making it easy to recognize.

Flain walked out of the basement. "Is there a problem?" he asked Itai, as it seemed to him that he had come back way too soon.

"Well, to become an adventurer, I need 10 gold coins, and I have no idea where to get them," Itai said.

"Let me think," Flain replied.

"I have an idea that might work. Find a place where monsters are located, like a nest or a dungeon. With Zheren’s help, kill a good number of them and bring their bodies to an adventurer. Tell him to give you his badge. Ideally, the adventurer should be stage 1 or 2."

"To be safe, don’t give him the dead bodies—let him sell them himself—because he might trick you and not give you any money. The reason you need to gather more monsters is that if you only collect a few bodies, no one might want to trade with you, as a few stage 1 bodies might not be worth anyone’s time," Flain explained his idea.

"That’s a pretty good idea. But honestly, it’s going to be a hassle," Itai mumbled.

"At least you’ll have something to do," Flain said, patting him on the back with a smirk before disappearing down the basement stairs.

Itai’s Perspective:

"Damn, that Flain doesn’t do anything. Even I could train nonstop if I had unlimited stamina," Itai grumbled with a smirk.

Itai then went to the garden, and after making sure he wasn’t visible, he summoned Zheren from the ground since the garden seemed like the most natural place to summon him. He then explained the plan to Zheren, who nodded in agreement. Inwardly, Itai complained about having an undead companion who couldn’t talk, making it impossible to have a chat.

Itai and Zheren walked through the Imperial City while Itai pondered how to find the location of a dungeon. Zheren was three meters tall, so people who couldn’t sense his stage were quite intimidated by him.

The reason Zheren’s height didn’t raise much suspicion was that in this world, many races existed, and thus there were many people with not entirely pure bloodlines, making unusual height relatively normal. Although Zheren’s height was far above average, causing some to fear him, it didn’t attract too much extra attention from the guards since they had seen plenty of odd folks before.

The Empire of Light was indeed racist, but only against races that were predominantly non-human. For example, dwarves were not welcome, as they looked like shorter humans but weren’t human. Therefore, short people in the Empire of Light wouldn’t grow long beards, as the empire might mistake them for dwarves and exile them.

Dwarves couldn’t even hide since, if they shaved their beards, it would immediately grow back to its original length—one of the racial traits of their kind.

Itai had 250 silver coins, which he could use to buy information somewhere, but he preferred to keep that money as a backup plan if, for some reason, he couldn’t become an adventurer.

After a while, an idea occurred to him...
