Descent of the Demon Master-Chapter 1039: Going To Work (4)
Chapter 1039: Going To Work (4)
The leader of the training team, Jeon Byeong-Su, scanned every trainee entering the auditorium with the eyes of a hawk.
‘I don’t like this. Not even one bit!’
It had already been over a decade since he began teaching in Jaegyeong’s new employee training program.
This program was originally a cooperation of several training teams and on-site workers. In Jeon Byeong-Su's case, he was an instructor boasting over ten years of experience overseeing this particular training program.
The new employee training program might be a challenge setting the hearts of newbies aflutter with excitement, but not for the instructors tasked with educating them. It'd be better to say the instructors experienced all sorts of frustrations and anger!
After all, the instructors' job was to prep a bunch of new chicks with zero knowledge of actual office work and turn them into a workforce capable of being deployed into various departments in as little time as possible.
The end goal was to instill Jaegyeong's corporate culture into these chicks and help them familiarize themselves with at least the bare minimum of various minor tasks. Failing to do this would lead to whining and unfounded claims of, “This batch of newbies has not learned anything useful from the program, therefore they are useless!” coming from various quarters.
Those who had not experienced the stress of dealing with these discontented voices would never guess how harrowing it could get.
The last newbie training program didn't go as well as planned, and all the instructors had a hard time during it. Jeon Byeong-Su and his colleagues somehow managed to conclude that disastrous program and figured they might get a little bit of breathing room until the next round of newbies were hired. Maybe they'd get to re-train the existing employees here and there, but other than that? It should have been a period of vacation.
However, for some reason… An “emergency” training program was suddenly scheduled, and Jeon Byeong-Su was expected to lead it!
‘Just what is the meaning of this?’
The clue was supposed to be in the name. The new employee training program was meant to train all new employees joining Jaegyeong. However, this particular program was to train employees of another company?
Jeon Byeong-Su had no choice but to do it since the higher-ups ordered him. That didn't mean he'd readily accept this development, though!
Worse still…
‘What is up with this packed schedule?!’
People usually associated ‘education’ with ‘acquiring skills.’ However, Jeon Byeong-Su did not agree with that notion.
Maybe such a thing could be applied to other fields, but not when it came to training office workers. The training program for them wasn't about acquiring various techniques and skills but more about 'assimilation'. That was the most important aspect of it all.
Simply put, it was about taking individuals filled with their own disparate personalities, inclinations, and values and making them fall in line with the corporation’s culture. That was the overall goal of the instructors overseeing the newbie training program.
However, this impromptu training program didn’t contain any of those processes. The order from the higher-ups was about training these people as hard and fast as possible to turn them into half-decent office workers, corporate culture be damned!
Even if a salaryman like Jeon Byeong-Su was supposed to ask, “How high?” when ordered to jump by his superiors, wasn’t this still a bit too much?
“Fuu-woo…”
Jeon Byeong-Su sighed quietly under his breath, then resumed staring like a hawk at the trainees still filing into the auditorium.
‘The more I look at them, the harder it is to figure it out…’
Thanks to overseeing many training programs until now, Jeon Byeong-Su could more or less estimate the potential grades a group of trainees could achieve simply by watching how they entered the auditorium.
However, not this time. He couldn’t get any reading from this group.
The reason for that was simple enough: Jeon Byeong-Su was finding it impossible to figure out the… disposition of this group of trainees, so to speak!
‘Would you look at that?’
The attire of everyone entering the auditorium was more or less the same. As in, they all wore business suits that matched the occasion of the newbie training program's first day. Which was all good and well.
The usual thing in this situation, though, was that newbies wearing business suits should be oozing with eager excitement and a hint of naivety. However, with this bunch… Well…
“Team Leader Jeon?”
Jeon Byeong-Su slightly turned his head to look when someone called out to him. “Mm?”
“Did we stumble into an annual conference of organized gangs or something?”
“…”
The person asking that, Deputy Chief Yang Jin-Chan, was making a weird face while looking back at Jeon Byeong-Su.
“You also got that impression?” Jeon Byeong-Su groaned slightly.
“Well… Yes. Kinda.”
Jeon Byeong-Su scanned the trainees, his expression crumpled a little. How was he supposed to explain this uneasy feeling?
It wasn’t as if he could spot any egregiously noticeable fault with these trainees. Everyone seemed to be observing the minimum dress code. And no one was acting menacingly or anything like that, either.
Even so, something about them didn’t quite feel right to Jeon Byeong-Su’s senses.
‘It’s like I’m inside that scene from that movie!’
The sight of a large group of strapping men in clean business suits and neatly trimmed and combed back hair held this mysterious power to make ordinary people tense up. Especially when they were entering an enclosed space en masse like this!
Maybe Jeon Byeong-Su felt this way because these people were not Jaegyeong’s newbies. None of them fit the traditional idea of new employees, after all! However, that was definitely not the right answer in this situation.
The freshness and naivety of a newbie were noticeably absent from these people. Actually, the stench of veterans stuck in their posts for years wafted strongly from these people instead!

“Team Leader Jeon… Do you know where these people are from?”
“Unfortunately, I wasn’t told either.”
“I mean, these people look like enforcers and bouncers, no…?”
Whether it was the bulging pectoral muscles threatening to rip apart their shirts or the muscles on the forearms sneakily visible just below the sleeves… Jeon Byeong-Su couldn't tell if he was in an auditorium for the newbie training program or a conference of enforcers from South Korea's criminal underworld!
“...Team Leader Jeon?"
“Yeah? What is it?”
“Do you think… this program will even work?”
“...What do you mean?”
“I mean, you know. This program is on a super-tight schedule, so… If some of these trainees can't get the concept quickly enough, we'll have to shout and stuff…” Yang Jin-Chan nervously swallowed his saliva. “But, uh, look at them. Shouting at them will get me a knuckle sandwich fed directly into my mouth!”
“…” Jeon Byeong-Su weirdly stared at the trainees and tutted slightly. “Come on, now. Is that something an instructor should be saying?”
“I’m serious, Team Leader Jeon. I’m scared. I don’t think these people are newbies.”
“Sure, they are definitely not newbies,” said Jeon Byeong-Su.
“N-no, that’s not what I meant, but…” Yang Jin-Chang tilted his head in confusion. “Their faces say these guys aren’t all that old, but the feelings I get…”
“That’s enough, man. Everyone’s all neat and presentable, no?”
Yang Jin-Chang stared, unimpressed, at Jeon Byeong-Su, but the team leader expertly ignored that questioning gaze.
How could any education be done when the instructors were piss-scared of the trainees!
‘Besides… Let’s be real, okay?’
If these fellas were really involved in the type of work as Yang Jin-Chang had feared, why would they show up all dressed neatly? It was simply a coincidence that they all had thuggish faces. That was all!
Just as Jeon Byeong-Su’s thoughts reached that far…
“Excuse me?”
“Mm?”
One of the trainees suddenly asked a question while cocking his head to the side. “Oii, mister. Where’s the john?”
“…”
Oii, mister? Oii???
Jeon Byeong-Su’s cheeks twitched ominously. Despite being stared at by a man with twitching cheeks, the trainee continued to cock his head side to side, his expression asking what he did was wrong.
An ordinary man might have lost his cool, but not Jeon Byeong-Su. Thankfully, he was a man who spent ten years taming unruly newbies. After all, wackjobs still got through the strict filters of tests and interviews to show up in newbie training programs every now and then.
Jeon Byeong-Su was definitely not swallowing back his anger because the trainee happened to be at least a head taller than him and boasted a massive, hulking frame!
Jeon Byeong-Su grunted. “Fella…”
“Yeah?”
“I know you don't work for Jaegyeong, but I'm still in charge of your training. So, it won't do to address me with ‘Oii, mister,’ okay? At the very least, try to be courteous toward your superiors.”
The trainee smirked at Jeon Byeong-Su after that brief lecture. “My superior? You are?”
“That’s right.”
“Huh. Well, I’ll be. I had no idea a paid tutor could act like my superior these days.”
“…”
“Whatever, man. Just tell me where the john is, okay?”
Jeon Byeong-Su bit down hard on his lip.
If someone displaying this sort of attitude was a new Jaegyeong recruit, Jeon Byeong-Su could've immediately announced the disqualification and sent this fool packing. That would've been the end of the story… But not this time. These men were not Jaegyeong employees, after all!
Jeon Byeong-Su certainly could grade these “employees” but lacked the authority to kick them out of the program.
“Holy cow. Mister, why are you making such a scary face? What’s the matter? Wanna hit me or something?” The trainee snarkily retorted.
Just as Jeon Byeong-Su was at a loss as to what to do, one of the trainees hurriedly walked up and grabbed the rude trainee's arm.
The rude trainee blinked his eyes. “Eh? What are you doing? Let me go.”
“Hey, stop! Listen, dude…”
“Oii, man. Don’t overreact, okay? I ain’t gonna cause a scene. I only wanna find out where the bloody toilet is…”
“I said, stop! You f*cking moron!”
The other trainee sounded urgent as he whispered to the rude trainee. His voice conveyed how pressed he felt, but something clearly forced him to keep his voice down as low as possible.
The rude trainee instantly realized something was wrong and hurriedly looked around as an expression of panic began spreading on his face.
Sluuuuurp…
The distinct sound of Iced Americano getting sucked in through a straw to enter a person’s mouth registered in the rude trainee’s hearing.
Sluuuurp…
“…!” The rude trainee saw who was standing behind him and began trembling fearfully. “A-A-Assembly Master?”
Kang Jin-Ho, with one sleeve rolled up, sucked on the coffee through a straw while staring back at the rude trainee. But then, he suddenly spat the straw out.
“N-no, I, uh, I can explain…” The rude trainee gasped fearfully, his face turning beet-red.
‘Why the heck is our Assembly Master showing up here?!’
Coming face-to-face with a grim reaper would've been more preferable to this situation. After all, Kang Jin-Ho was scary enough to instantly demote a mere grim reaper into a neighborhood uncle!
Kang Jin-Ho raised his index finger, then made a distinct beckoning gesture.
The rude trainee rushed toward Kang Jin-Ho, his face resembling a cow being dragged into an abattoir.
Jeon Byeong-Su dazedly spectated this scene.
‘What the hell just happened?’
What a bizarre development this was. That threatening trainee was at least a head taller than Jeon Byeong-Su. And his wide shoulders were so broad and straight that they could've been used as a cutting board. But that young man beckoning arrogantly was smaller than Jeon Byeong-Su in size!
Since the two men stood within Jeon Byeong-Su's line of sight, the rude trainee seemed at least double the size of the young man. But the smaller man remained stone-faced while beckoning nonchalantly, while the much larger dude was bowing as low as his body could bend, his whole body shivering fearfully!
Even if one’s status and power in society were not determined by one’s physical size, this spectacle still seemed a little too outlandish.
The young man casually muttered, “Your name?”
“I-it’s Jo Hyeok-Min, sir!” The rude trainee, Jo Hyeok-Min, yelled desperately at the top of his lungs.
“So, Jo Hyeok-Min.”
“Yes, sir! Assembly Master, sir!”
“Didn’t you come here to learn?”
“…! M-my apologies, sir!”
Kang Jin-Ho silently stared at Jo Hyeok-Min before mouthing the straw again.
Sluuuuurp…
“…!”
Jo Hyeok-Min realized something just then. Many, many people walked this Earth, but only the Assembly Master was capable of frightening others with something as innocuous as sucking on a straw to drink coffee!
“I have a job for you, Jo Hyeok-Min. Go deliver this message to everyone in the auditorium.”
“Yes, sir!”
“Anyone with rubbish grades will have a private sit-down with Lee Hyeon-Su.”
Jo Hyeok-Min’s face instantly drained of all color. Lee Hyeon-Su, the devil of the administrative department!
Anyone who had the opportunity to work in the same office as Lee Hyeon-Su knew how much of a villain that man was. Jo Hyeok-Min's physique might not suggest it, but he was actually an office worker, too. And he'd rather jump out of a ten-floor office building instead of getting low grades and having a… private one-on-one with Lee Hyeon-Su!
“Also…” Kang Jin-Ho muttered as if he wasn’t quite finished yet. “Anyone who gets disqualified because of their poor attitude score will deal with me, not Lee Hyeon-Su.”
“…!” Jo Hyeok-Min’s eyes opened wide. All blood was drained out of his complexion just then.
Kang Jin-Ho cocked his brow slightly. “You. Minus one point in that score.”
“I, I will rectify it immediately!”
Kang Jin-Ho pointed upstairs with his chin. “The bathroom’s on the second floor. Hurry up.”
“Y-yes, sir!” Jo Hyeok-Min roared loudly enough to rock the interior and rushed up the staircase with his full power.
Sluuuurp…
Kang Jin-Ho disinterestedly stared at this spectacle, then took another sip of his Iced Americano.
‘This might be an issue.'
He failed to think about this problem ahead of time since he viewed these people as his precious, adorable, and well-mannered underlings. However, when unleashed on the unsuspecting masses… Weren't these Assembly members scary enough to instantly force hardened criminals to sit on their laps and act like babies?
Kang Jin-Ho realized he shouldn’t have rushed ahead with this program without preparing a safety net to rein in these unruly martial artists.
Then again… This issue might not be much of a problem this time since Kang Jin-Ho was going to attend the training program.
Kang Jin-Ho walked up to Jeon Byeong-Su and bowed a little. “Let me apologize on that man’s behalf.”
“N-no, sir. It’s not… necessary.” Jeon Byeong-Su inadvertently replied politely.
‘Who is this young man?’
Just before Jeon Byeong-Su could say anything else…
“Mister Jin-Ho!”
A familiar voice came from somewhere behind Jeon Byeong-Su.
