Chapter 279: 279. Catching Fish

Huahua explained to her second brother why they came down so late, and as expected, the basket was taken by her second brother, even though she was much stronger than him. Just for this, Huahua decided not to complain.

"Second brother, from afar, I heard all the noise. What were you doing?" Huahua couldn’t help but ask curiously as they walked down.

Mainly, if it weren’t for anything important, their eldest brother would have certainly come to greet her like the second brother did.

In fact, the eldest brother just waved at her and then turned to do something unknown.

Actually, she could easily find out by spreading her spiritual power, but if everything is known in advance, what would be the meaning of life?

At this point, the second brother also became interested, clearly something joyful, with a smile on his face.

"Sister, it’s good news. Can you guess what we discovered coming down the mountain?"

He even teased, and Huahua raised an eyebrow, but cooperated and asked, "Second brother, what did you discover?"

"Fish, lots of fish."

"Really?" Huahua hadn’t started to be surprised yet, but the sisters next to her looked down the mountain in delight.

"Really, we were just figuring out how to catch the live fish." Huahua’s eldest brother finally spoke, nodding affirmatively.

Upon hearing this, the girls couldn’t hold back and quickly hurried down.

Huahua also stopped being surprised, thinking that the least stocked item in her space should be fish.

Back when they were stockpiling supplies, there weren’t many fish sellers. She did stock up some, but at the time, the space hadn’t been upgraded to store living things, so breeding was impossible.

Later, even after the space was upgraded, she hadn’t specifically sought out fish sellers, so the quantity was really not much.

Honestly, Huahua was quite interested. If she could catch live fish and store them in the space for breeding, she wouldn’t have to worry about not having fish to eat later. Thinking of this, her pace quickened too.

"Big brother..." Huahua eagerly stretched her neck to look ahead.

"Be careful," her big brother cautioned while pulling her back. "It’s dangerous down there. Even though it looks dry, some places are still soft. If you fall in, you’ll get stuck." Saying so, her big brother picked up a heavy stone and threw it in. Moments later, under everyone’s watchful eyes, it slowly sank and vanished.

Everyone, including Huahua, was startled by the scene.

So that was why they didn’t just go down to catch fish, even though the pool wasn’t far. It was clear now.

And it seemed someone had already tried. Following the brothers’ gaze, Huahua and the others saw someone covered in mud, especially with feet caked in a thick layer. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be Wang Cong, who liked to follow the brothers around.

"Cong almost didn’t make it up," noticing their gaze, Hua Dabao explained.

"Exactly, if it weren’t for Yun Ao and Luo Song thinking of a way, Cong would have been done for here today."

Recalling the earlier scene still made everyone anxious.

The girls gasped in response to Hua Dabao’s words, nervously asking:

"What happened?"

"Here’s how it happened..."

It turned out Hua Yunao, worrying about the girls, had followed them to look around. Instead of finding the girls, they discovered a not completely dried-up waterhole here, attracted by the dense school of fish inside.

With fish in sight, how could they leave? Although small, fish is still meat, and fish soup is quite nourishing. Everyone got excited, discussing how to catch these fish and transport them back to the valley.

The waterhole here was shallow and easy to catch fish from, unlike the lake in the valley. There were fish there, but catching them was almost impossible. If one managed to catch any, it was just luck, like a blind cat catching a dead mouse.

While everyone suggested using a small basket tied to a stick to catch the fish, the impatient Wang Cong, relying on his short stature and light weight, jumped onto the dry mud. By the time they realized, he had already taken two steps, and as others prepared to join him thinking it was safe, danger struck.

The foot Wang Cong raised to step near the waterhole suddenly sank, soon followed by the other. Fortunately, he was not far from them, and Yun Ao and Luo Song quickly advised him not to struggle. They had him lie flat on the dry mud, then toss in a stick, slowly pulling him out of the mud. Everyone got quite a scare, realizing the mud was actually soft beneath, like a trap.

Hua Dabao had a great knack for storytelling, illustrating vividly with gestures, making it easy for listeners to get caught up, inevitably feeling tense.

One could imagine how anxious everyone was at that moment. The girls couldn’t help but look at the long drag marks on the mud.

So initially, they hadn’t discovered something good; they were scrambling to rescue someone, no wonder they were so emotional.

Wang Cong, who had recovered, almost buried his head in his lap. Losing face in front of his brothers was one thing, but now he lost it in front of the girls too.

But no one was interested in his feelings. With the danger gone, everyone’s attention was on the fish in the waterhole, thinking about how to bring them back.

Looking at the waterhole half a yard from the shore, with water flowing and fish swimming naturally with the current, it was packed with fish. Huahua felt regretful, thinking if it were just a bit closer, she could reach the water and transfer the fish to her space.

After all, her spiritual power was too weak. Although the external range was not weak, she couldn’t transfer objects into her space from a distance; a medium was needed.

In just a moment of distraction, she saw that her brothers had already started preparing.

Huahua promptly emptied her basket, giving it to her brothers.

Compared to fish, bamboo shoots and bracken suddenly didn’t seem as appealing.

Then, Da Ya and Xiao Mao also contributed their baskets. None of these young ones had come prepared with baskets, and while someone could weave them, it was too time-consuming. With ready-made ones available, who had the patience to wait?

Watching her two brothers eye her little basket, Huahua’s mouth twitched slightly but she didn’t move.

It’s not that she was unwilling to let go of it, but she felt using a basket to catch fish would be too heavy. Even tying it to a long stick wouldn’t be easy to handle.

Fortunately, she had a habit of covering things in the basket, so she reached into the basket and, under the astonished eyes of her brothers and Luo Song, pulled out a stack of rough burlap from the bottom. She had wanted to use a fishing net, but it was too large to handle easily.

"Big brother, it’s not that I won’t share the basket. Bamboo baskets get too heavy when wet, so this is better."

The piece of cloth she took out was about four feet long and two feet wide, enough to make a couple of big pouch nets for catching fish.

"But... wasting such good fabric?" Although it was cheap burlap, her big brother was still reluctant.

"Brother, it’s not wasteful. After catching the fish, the cloth can be reused, and it saves time and effort."
