Divine Heritage: Only I Can Judge The gods-Chapter 19: Finishing Touches
Chapter 19 - Finishing Touches
For a moment Kiera considered attacking him the moment she came close but she composed herself.
Although she had heard many things about people from the slums, Ark in particular didn't seem like an unreasonable guy...
And yet, the look he had on his face right now sent chills down her spine. For someone who was in a trial such as this, he seemed strangely excited.
It's almost as though he was itching to see the result of his plans.
He walked over to the cage and stared at the lock. Kiera had expected him to use a key since he had been bribing the guard all this time but to her surprise, he unsheathed one of the swords.
Clang!
With praiseworthy force, an a highly inefficient swing, the lock of the cage caved under pressure, becoming a mangled mess that was thrown to the floor by the resulting force.
The door to the prison swung open and Kiera stepped out, cautiously taking note of his every move.
Kiera was not exactly in the best state, she had not eaten since the last day Ark came. The guards had brought water to at least prevent her from dying, but it was so little that she still felt dehydrated after drinking it.
Still, Kiera felt confident in her chances against him if she had no choice.
Ark reached for the second sword, he pulled it and its sheath from his waist and handed it to Kiera.
They both left the carriage in a hurry, Ark leading the way. Just as they stepped out, Kiera paused at the sight of a dead guard.
The floor all around him was soaked in warm blood but the man was long gone, he had been killed.
No doubt by Ark.
"It's time for a little magic trick..."
This was one of the most important parts of the plan, Ark had told her he would fake her death but had not exactly given her a proper explanation, leaving everything to her imagination.
'So this is how he plans to pull it off...'
Ark picked up the body with relative ease, he walked back into the carriage only to return later tossing out the bucket Kiera had... Uhum... made use of it for the past few days.
He pointed at her neck when he stepped out of the carriage. Kiera stared at him, slightly confused.
"Your necklace."
"Oh."
Still hanging on her neck was the single piece of jewelry she wore.
Ark took the gold necklace that probably cost a fortune to get and went into the carriage, probably to wrap it around the guard's neck.
He came out a bit later with the man's jacket and handed it over to her to reduce the effects of the cold.
After stripping the man of everything that would have identified him as the guard, he brought the torch to the side of the carriage and they watched as the flames greedily consumed the wood.
Shortly after, the entire carriage was engulfed in a glorious flame, the heat of the fire was intense and soon the snow beneath began to melt.
The cracking and splitting of wood could be heard, followed by the foul odour of burning flesh.
This was their cue to leave.
"Can you run?"
Kiera nodded.
"Good, follow me."
Ark took off north, trodding through the snow without looking back.
Kiera was not too far behind but was slowly running out of breath, it could not be helped, her body was starved.
And yet she pushed forward, managing to even run side by side with him.
Soon they left the burning carriage behind and went deeper and deeper north. Their journey continued for a few more minutes until they arrived at the entrance of a cave.
There were piles of snow around its entrance, making it slightly less conspicuous.
By the time they arrived, Kiera was huddled down panting heavily, her whole body felt on the verge of collapse and her stomach felt wrong.
Strangely she felt like throwing up even though she had not eaten for some time.
It was strange... They had ran for quite some time but she had no idea how long they had been running for. The good thing was that they had not been caught.

Ark offered her a hand and pulled her back up, just before they both went through the entrance.
Kiera paused a few seconds after entering the cave...
"Why are there blood stains everywhere?"
The entire cave looked like a scene from a dreadful battle. There was a pool of coagulated blood deeper into the cave, dots of blood going as high up as the ceiling and a cracked wall.
Ark laughed nervously.
"I actually got attacked by a beast when I first came here." He said while scratching his head.
"And where is that beast now?"
Kiera's hands were already inches away from her weapon.
Ark waved at her dismissively and began to gather wood around an area where a fire seemed to have been previously lit.
"Don't worry about the crazy guy, I killed it."
Once again Kiera was given a pause by the slender young man. He was far from being well built and yet his hands carried immense strength, he lacked training and yet he had already killed two things since getting here.
A guard, and a beast.
He was meant to be from the slums and yet his intelligence was far above average.
And then there was the issue of his eyes...
At first she thought they were contact lenses, gold eyes were not a natural occurrence.
Amber eyes could be found, true, but his eyes were far too distinct from them.
You came as you naturally are in the trial, that meant his eyes were naturally gold.
'Who is this guy?'
The more time she spent with him, the more her curiosity was piqued.
Shortly after the fire was set up, Ark put his hands into his jacket and brought out something that had been wrapped in several layers.
He handed them to her and then passed her a water skin as well.
Kiera could already guess why it was...
She unwrapped the package to reveal several strips of dried meat, far too many for a single person's serving.
"Did you steal these?"
Ark nodded while pulling another material from his bag. This time it was a piece of metal that resembled some sort of clock, a compass.
"Yes, I don't think they'll be needing it much by tomorrow."
Preferring to eat it warm, Kiera placed the meat on one of the sticks, brought it closer to the fire and watched as the meat sizzled.
Ark handed her the compass and they finally discussed the last details of the plan.
Kiera stared into the burning flame.
It was finally time for her to contribute to their victory.
Tomorrow was the day they led a rebellion.
It was ironic really,, that the lady they were trying to save would end up at the front of their formation.
