Chapter 119: [118] Cold war lite (3)

In front of him, several team members had already taken their positions, their bodies concealed behind the dense trees. Their assault rifles were at the ready, muzzles aimed directly at the towering stone cliffs. There, hidden within the darkness of a cave, lay the temporary stronghold of the God Evil Sect’s forces. These were no ordinary enemies—dozens of them, all second-class magic users, and worse, a Templar Knight was watching over their movements from afar.

"Damn it... are we really going up against these lunatics with just six people?" Gav muttered under his breath, his grip tightening around his rifle.

"Shut up and focus," Erik whispered sharply, his eyes never leaving the enemy’s base. "Henes, get the bazooka ready. We only have one shot to throw them into chaos."

Henes, who had remained silent up until now, let out a deep sigh before pulling out the weapon they had prepared. This bazooka was designed to fire anti-armor rockets, but in this situation, it would serve as the catalyst for absolute mayhem inside the cave.

"This is going to be a beautiful explosion," Henes murmured with a smirk, lifting the heavy weapon onto his shoulder.

According to the intelligence provided by Kael before the mission, there was one major weakness they could exploit. If the enemy was suddenly attacked and thrown into panic, they would need approximately three minutes to recover. However, within the first ten seconds, they would be completely vulnerable—trapped in confusion, unable to think clearly.

Arkan had explained this phenomenon during their night classes in training. Panic wasn’t just about fear; it was about how the human brain struggled to process unexpected events. In the first ten seconds after a massive shock, the mind was incapable of properly assessing a new threat.

"We have ten seconds to take out as many as possible before they realize what’s happening," Erik reminded them, his eyes razor-sharp.

"Ten seconds? That’s shorter than my lunch break," Gav whispered, tension lacing his voice.

"Then make sure you don’t waste a single second of it," Erik replied coldly, his hand signaling the final command before the battle began.

Among the shadows of the trees, the soldiers held their breath, waiting for the perfect moment. In the distance, the silhouettes of the God Evil Sect’s forces could be seen descending the cliffside using ropes, moving through the darkness like hunters stalking their prey. Erik watched them closely, his gaze sweeping over every detail, ensuring that they were all within the kill zone.

But among them, one figure stood out. Erik narrowed his eyes, a bad feeling creeping up his spine. That person wasn’t like the others—his movements were calmer, more confident, as if unaffected by his surroundings. However, there was no time to analyze further—this opportunity wouldn’t come twice.

He steadied his breathing, then in a low yet firm voice, gave the order that would shift the tide.

"Henes, now."

In an instant, a thunderous explosion shattered the air. The bazooka fired, its rocket slicing through the darkness like a lightning bolt in the night. Erik’s eyes remained locked on the target, watching as the projectile struck the cliffside with brutal force.

A deafening blast erupted across the canyon, its echo swallowing all other sounds. Shards of rock flew in every direction, dust surged into the air, and the first screams pierced through the chaos. The opening strike had been dealt, and now hell had truly descended upon the canyon.

The explosion sent shockwaves through the battlefield, toppling the God Evil Sect’s forces into disarray. Massive boulders crumbled from the cliffside, crushing several mages still clinging to their ropes, obliterating them before they could even comprehend what had happened.

Erik didn’t wait.

"Attack!"

In a heartbeat, gunfire erupted amid the swirling dust and smoke. The muzzles of their assault rifles flashed in the darkness, spitting bullets into the enemy ranks. Screams of pain filled the air as unprepared mages were cut down one by one.

But these were no ordinary foes.

From within the thickening haze, magical lights flickered to life, forming intricate circles in midair. The surviving mages raised their hands, chanting rapidly—their shock was fading, and they were retaliating. In mere seconds, fireballs and streaks of lightning shot through the air, striking back at Erik’s team. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

"Take cover!" Erik shouted, diving behind a large tree just as an explosion tore through the spot he had been standing in moments ago. Gav and Murok rolled behind a boulder, while Octa and Hans fired relentlessly from an elevated position.

Henes let out a wild laugh amidst the chaos, his heavy weapon unloading a barrage of bullets into the enemy ranks. But a swift mage countered with a razor-sharp wind blast, slicing through branches and sending dirt flying everywhere.

"That was too damn close!" Henes cursed, rolling backward before firing another round.

Erik peeked out from cover, analyzing the battlefield. Though they had taken down several enemies in the opening strike, they were still outnumbered. Twenty-four second-class mages remained, and they were quickly adapting to Erik’s attack patterns.

But they couldn’t afford to let the enemy seize the initiative.

"Gav, Hans! Flank left! Octa, you’re with Henes! Focus on the ones wielding long staffs—they’re the high-tier casters!"

"Got it!"

With their formation taking shape, the battle erupted into a fierce clash between magic and modern military tactics.

A mage unleashed a massive fire attack, engulfing the path ahead of Erik in flames, but he had anticipated this. He sidestepped swiftly, raising his rifle and firing a precise shot straight into the mage’s chest before the spell could fully form.

The mage staggered, blood splattering onto the ground as he collapsed, his eyes wide with shock.

But the battle was far from over.

From a distance, something stirred.

Erik turned sharply, sensing a presence unlike the others.

Descending from the cliffside with calm, deliberate steps was a man clad in black armor. Despite the chaos of explosions, gunfire, and screams around him, he moved with an unsettling tranquility, as if the battlefield was nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

"Well, looks like we’ve got ourselves a Force-wielding knight!" Henes called out, his usual playful tone failing to mask the tension in his voice.

"Yeah... and unfortunately for us," Erik muttered, his gaze locked onto the new adversary, "we’re going to need someone just as crazy."

In an instant, a shadow appeared behind the Templar Knight.

Blake.

Before the knight could react, a dagger streaked toward the gap between his armor and neck. But as if anticipating the attack, the black-armored warrior spun with inhuman speed. Blake’s blade barely scraped the surface before a Force-enhanced punch slammed into his gut.

Blake was sent flying, but he merely laughed as he flipped midair, landing in a crouched stance.

"Finally, something fun," he grinned, his eyes alight with a terrifying excitement.

The Templar Knight gazed at him impassively, but the air around him began to ripple—an unmistakable sign that he was starting to take things seriously.

Meanwhile, across the battlefield, Erik and his team were still locked in combat with the remaining mages. Though they had taken down several, the survivors had begun to regroup, forming a more coordinated defense. Their spells came faster now—fireballs and lightning arrows streaking through the sky like a deadly storm.

But something far worse was unfolding.

At the heart of the battlefield, a mage draped in blood-soaked robes knelt over a glowing red magic circle. His chants, spoken in an ancient tongue, grew louder as dark energy spiraled around him.

The blood of fallen mages flowed toward the center of the ritual, forming a massive eye-like pattern carved into the ground.

"Shit, someone’s trying to summon something!" Erik shouted, realization hitting him like a hammer.

Gav snapped his head toward the scene, his face going pale as he saw the nearly completed summoning sigil.

"Don’t tell me they’re summoning a demon!"

Erik clenched his teeth.

If that was the case, then their situation was about to take a turn for the absolute worst.

He didn’t need long to understand what was happening. Arkan had warned them about this possibility once before. During a past briefing, he had spoken of a time when they might face something not of this world. Back then, Erik and the others had assumed he was talking about powerful enemies—skilled mages, elite soldiers from the Empire. But Arkan’s words had held a far more terrifying truth.

"People will always seek power," Arkan had said, his gaze cold as he addressed the soldiers before him. "And because of that, they will do anything to obtain it, even if it means opening the gates of hell itself."

Erik gritted his teeth.

Now, that warning had become reality.

The summoning circle pulsed, its crimson glow intensifying, flickering like burning flesh. The air trembled, waves of heat radiating outward, carrying the stench of sulfur.

And from within the vortex of dark energy, something began to emerge.

A massive clawed hand, black as obsidian, broke through the surface, gripping the ground with enough force to shatter the stone beneath it. This was followed by an enormous head, adorned with two curved horns like scythes, its golden serpent-like eyes gleaming with hunger.

The creature pulled itself free from the portal, its red, flesh-like skin smoldering with dark mist. Each movement sent ripples of energy across the battlefield, an oppressive force that made even the air feel heavy.

The summoning mage raised his arms triumphantly, his face contorted in ecstasy.

"Come forth and fulfill my wish!"

With an earth-shaking roar, the demon threw open its massive jaws, revealing rows of serrated teeth capable of crushing steel in a single bite.

Demon Jingul had arrived.
