Chapter 676: Chapter 675: Coming to the Door and Acting Arrogantly
After the New Year, all of the festive lanterns and utensils were taken down and put away. With Madam Zhou at home and someone else looking after the shop outside, Wufu didn’t bother with those matters at all, adopting the stance of a hands-off manager.
Yingmei and Purple Jade discussed the tasks in the privacy of their room, whispering for quite a while. After summoning Jadeite and Hongyu and giving them instructions, Purple Jade then packed a small bundle and left.
As for Purple Jade’s departure, Jadeite and the others didn’t ask much. They knew she must be acting on Wufu’s orders, or why else would she leave?
Purple Jade didn’t leave alone; she also took Liu Jin with her. As Wufu said, he was too young and staying in one place would be like having a narrow view. It would be good for him to see more of the world and learn more, which could only be beneficial. What’s more, having an extra person would provide some support and, in case something came up, someone to send news back.
With everything arranged, Wufu busied himself once more carving that hairpin, while Madam Zhou became preoccupied with preparing for her upcoming marriageable age gift. She sent out invitations to watch the ceremony and to ask the Guest of Honor and Praise Giver; all had to be invited in advance.
Purple Jade and Liu Jin, disguised as a brother and sister, arrived at Taiping Town and checked into an inn. They acted separately, wandering around the town primarily to gather information about the Lu Family in preparation for their scheme.
Meanwhile, the Lu Family, of course, knew nothing of all this. Old Lady Lu had no idea that a great disaster was about to befall her household. Instead, she urged her children and grandchildren to accompany her to the Old Zhou family’s house, aiming, naturally, to fight for her pitiable daughter and son-in-law.
In the county, Old Lady Lu, having been annoyed by Madam Zhou and her daughter, had bottled up a lot of anger. Back on her own turf, she arrived at the Old Zhou family with the combative spirit and fury of a rooster.
Old Lady Zhou, having been ill for several days, felt her head pound with pain upon hearing the Lu family had come.
"You go. Just say I’m too sick to see anyone!" Old Lady Zhou, propped up weak from illness on the bed, waved her hand and told Zhou Xueli.
"Oh my, is it that you’re too sick to see anyone, or is it that you’re too ashamed to show your old face?" Old Lady Lu barged into Old Lady Zhou’s room with an imposing presence.
Old Lady Zhou’s face darkened.
"Mother," said Lady Liang, heavily pregnant and nervously watching Old Lady Zhou and Zhou Xueli. The people from the Lu Family were too assertive, and she just couldn’t stop them.
Old Lady Zhou said, "What brings our in-law here?"
She glanced at the sons and grandsons of the Lu Family; a whole crowd of menacing figures. If one didn’t know better, one might think they had come to seek revenge.
"What brings us here?" Old Lady Lu snorted, "Why pretend to be ignorant, old in-law? You know very well why we’re here."
Her words and tone were almost accusatory.
Since when could a butcher’s wife lord it over her like this?
Old Lady Zhou began to cough violently.
Zhou Xueli quickly stepped forward to ease her breathing, then coldly glared at the people in the room and shouted, "Get out of here while I’m still able to speak civilly!"
Did the Lu family think the Zhou family had no one to stand up for them? Even if the eldest son was not present, Zhou Xueli was no coward. He too was a man with spirit!
"Oh, the nerve of you, the audacity. Why didn’t you show such belligerence at Zhou Yingmei’s place?" Old Lady Lu hummed, "What’s the use of being belligerent with us? If you’re capable, go to the county jail and be fierce there, and get your brother and sister-in-law out!"
"You!" Zhou Xueli’s face turned a beet-red with anger, and he took a step forward, his eyes bulging and bloodshot.
Old Lady Zhou grabbed his arm, coughing again. The heavy coughing sounds made everyone frown; such coughing, could it be tuberculosis?
