Chapter 59: A Promise Made

No one looked surprised or intimidated by Captain Shodan’s declaration, and seeing that no one was reacting the way he wanted them to, he snorted and turned around, putting his helmet back on.

The students followed behind him after exchanging glances, walking a few feets from him. The two other groups also followed their instructors to different parts of the jungle, disappearing into the dense foliage.

They moved through the thick greenery quickly, and they soon got to a tall, gray, metallic wall.

The wall was covered in moss, and some areas looked rusted. There was a brief pause from Captain Shodan as he stood before the wall, speaking some words to himself.

He placed a hand on it, and immediately, the wall lit up with two concentric circles having various symbols between them. Three other circles lit up around the circle, and then a part of the wall moved, shifting and unlocking to reveal an opening.

Captain Shodan walked in, pointing at a small building close by and telling them what to do.

He didn’t bother himself about their existence after this and immediately left them to their devices, leaving through the same opening in the wall.

"Now what?" Kenzo asked. The building was their residence for their stay here, and though the answer was obvious, Kenzo was hinting at another thing entirely.

There was silence in the group as they all stood there, then suddenly Damion began to move.

Lyra automatically followed after him, and Matilda subconsciously did the same, only to be held back by her brother.

"Where do you think you’re going?" Kenzo asked sharply.

"To the building of course," Matilda replied. "I’m tired and need to rest my head."

Kenzo’s grip loosened, and he moved closer to Matilda, throwing Kaiden and the rest, who had already gone far by now, a suspicious glance. "We need to be careful. I don’t trust them."

"Neither do I!" Matilda uttered harshly. "Look, if we keep suspecting everyone, then how would we make friends and real allies who would have our backs?"

Kenzo sighed at those words and let her go. "Just be careful," he said.

Matilda smiled. "You worry too much."

The moment she turned, she connected to Damion using their mental link, and she spoke some words to him.

A few minutes later, they had all settled in. Damion was in a room not too big, and not too small. All the things a person would need in a house were there, and he began to wonder...

"So there wasn’t a need to take the mattress," he thought as he pressed a hand against the soft bed.

Damion shrugged his shoulders and laid on the bed. It was afternoon already, so the atmosphere was hot and somewhat cosy. He decided to rest a little, but it was at that moment a knock came on his door.

He got up and opened it, expecting to see Matilda, but to his surprise, Kenzo stood outside his room, staring at him weirdly.

"Err... come in," Damion said after Kenzo refused to say anything.

Damion opened the door wider, and Kenzo walked in, his sword rebounding against the door as he passed.

Matilda appeared behind her brother as he entered, and she also walked in.

She pulled a chair leaning against the wall and sat on it, while Kenzo stood beside her like a loyal bodyguard.

"What can I do for you both?" Damion asked.

Matilda raised a brow. "You didn’t fully tell me what happened and how we can now do all these things," she said, saying the last part in his head for clarification.

Damion furrowed his brows. "Then why is he here?" Damion looked towards Kenzo.

"Just so you won’t try anything funny," Kenzo replied bluntly. "The rooms are soundproof, you know? I wouldn’t want my rival to die from an assassination."

Damion chuckled softly. "That won’t happen."

Matilda noticed a small smile appear on Kenzo’s face, and she inwardly smiled. ’They don’t hate each other, just some minor differences they have,’ she concluded.

Damion faced her after arranging his thoughts, then he began to speak.

At first, what he said was confusing to them, but along the way, they came to understand fully.

Damion didn’t tell them he was a Half-breed Dragon or whatever, he only told them that their bond was created because of his Shadow Ability, and for some reason, he needed a... Mate, so as to fully awaken.

"So you just had to choose Matilda of all girls," Kenzo uttered.

"Choose Matilda?" Damion iterated. "I didn’t choose her, my Ability did. Besides, it didn’t just choose randomly even, but chose someone who had the strongest feelings for me out of every other female."

Kenzo looked at Matilda, and she hurriedly looked away, hiding a blush.

Kenzo clicked his tongue and focused on Damion again.

"If you truly want her to be with you then, you would have to promise to protect her with your life," Kenzo suddenly said, startling Damion and Matilda. "So you won’t ditch her like you did the last time."

"Slow down brother, you’re taking things a little too far," Matilda said, the red of her face intensifying from embarrassment and anger.

"Ahhh! Cut the bullshit," Kenzo replied. "You think I don’t know how you both feel, especially you Matilda?"

Matilda paused and looked away, her face turning redder.

"Since dad isn’t here, then it’s my duty to protect you and give you both my blessings... only if Mr Damion here swears to protect you with his life, treat you like he would treat the love of his life, and would never go after another person."

Kenzo shot Damion a deep gaze, waiting for his reply.

Matilda looked towards him too, a pleading look in her eyes.

Damion sighed. "I promise to protect her with my life, treat her like a Queen, and never go after another person ever again."

Damion smiled after seeing the message, and Matilda —who couldn’t see the system— thought he was smiling at her, making her blush harder, then she suddenly frowned.

"Does that mean you’ll break up with that blonde you brought with you?" She questioned with a slightly irritated expression on her face.

Damion laughed lightly. "We were never together," he replied. "She’s just my personal Blacksmith and Techsmith."
