Chapter 86: Changing Sides

Damion’s purple eyes glowed in the dark, his whole attention trained on the ground beneath him.

So far, the only Extraterrestrials he had seen were Wolves, so there was a high chance that the Extraterrestrial approaching was a Wolf too.

He waited in the cover of the tree leaves, his daggers morphing into a Zhanmadao, and a torrent of purple flames coating it.

Nyx fueled the flames with his Mana, keeping it close to the blade of the weapon. This was something Damion had thought of when he remembered Nyx’s ability to produce a special kind of flame.

The flames were extremely hot —hot enough to melt steel in seconds— but it was unable to be projected outwards and used as a ranged attack.

Nyx didn’t know why this was, so he just attributed it to the flames’ properties. Hotter than normal flames, but unable to be used as a projectile, unless it coated an object.

Damion raised the Zhanmadao above his head when he sensed the enemy approaching, and timing his jump, he kicked off the branch, breaking it as he descended rapidly towards the ground.

The target arrived at the spot at the same time, not expecting an ambush already awaiting it.

The Wolf was caught off guard, barely reacting as the large flame-coated blade descended on it like a guillotine, severing its head cleanly.

A second later, the head was sent flying, the Wolf’s momentum carrying its body forward by a few meters before it crashed to the ground unmoving.

Damion landed with a grunt, exhaling and flicking the weapon in his hand.

He thought of Aspasia in that moment, and he looked in the direction she had headed.

He could still feel her in the periphery of Dragon’s Authority and learn her general direction, but he couldn’t pinpoint her exact location.

He pulled up the map, only to find the red dot still on it.

Damion’s eyes widened, and he swiftly turned around, raising his weapon.

The Wolf was dead, but the red dot on the map wasn’t in line with the Wolf’s dead body, meaning that...

"That’s not the target!" Damion exclaimed, turning around just in time to dodge a beam of yellow energy.

Damion raised his Weapon as it transformed into an O-Katana, the purple flames still coating it. He looked ahead, following the path the beam had come from, his eyes narrowing.

’That yellow energy feels familiar,’ Damion thought, his mind trying to recollect.

The crunching of leaves as the enemy approached made Damion ready himself, and he prepared his mind for an intense clash.

The approaching target walked out of the cover of trees, and showed themselves, causing Damion to raise his brow.

"Toby," he said, his mind finally grasping why the beam of energy felt familiar.

Toby had mysteriously disappeared from the Academy a long time ago, and Damion wondered where he had left to.

Seemingly registering something shocking, Damion faced Toby and asked:

"Was it worth it?" He began, his voice deep and sombre. "Betraying the human race to side with the Extraterrestrials?"

Toby paused, his yellow eyes seemingly losing focus and glazing over.

"Yes... yes it was," he said, his voice coming out differently from what Damion remembered.

"I have never had this much power flowing through me before," he said again. "The Extraterrestrials granted me more power than I could have ever gotten."

Damion stared into Toby’s eyes, but he found no semblance of humanity left in them.

Was this a mind controlled husk?

Was the real Toby... dead?

’I doubt,’ Damion thought, then shifted his gaze to the spot behind Toby. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

"What is your goal in taking their side then?" Damion asked.

"To become strong enough to dominate the humans and take revenge," Toby said in a sinister tone.

"Revenge for what?"

"For the murder of my parents!"

Damion paused, his brows raising in confusion. Was Toby brainwashed? His parents were very much alive the last time he checked.

Damion didn’t linger on this thought for long and raised his sword up.

"I’m afraid that wouldn’t be happening."

"Are you going to stop me?" Toby asked, his hands beginning to glow with power.

Damion’s grip tightened on his sword, his gaze flashing with a dark light, answering Toby’s questions.

Whether he liked it or not, Toby was going to die today.

Toby took a step forward and swung his two arms, twin beams of yellow energy firing out and weaving into one whole.

Damion pulled up his memories of his fight with those moles on their first mission.

He had practiced deflecting energy beams with his sword and failed multiple times; but seeing the energy beam heading his way, he was confident.

Took a strong step forward and raised the sword, his intent reaching Nyx, resulting in the sword morphing.

The blade expanded, becoming wider and thicker, and as the beam reached him, he swung his sword like a bat, parrying the beam and successfully reflecting it in another direction.

The attack wasn’t physical, but mental, so it rolled over the fauna, doing no danger to them whatsoever.

Toby’s Ability to induce sleepiness on any living being his energy touched was dangerous against Humans, but against Damion, it was worthless —though Toby didn’t need to know that.

Another beam was reflected in another direction, and Damion dashed ahead quickly.

Naturally the beam would have passed through the sword to hit him. However, his weapon wasn’t natural.

If it was another person facing Toby, they might have lost in just a few exchanges.

Toby’s forehead wrinkled, his anger evident. He cocked his arm backwards, and an armor materialized around his body, its sturdy plates hinting at its strong defenses.

Damion’s eyes narrowed.

He hadn’t seen anyone use a spatial device or tool before, except him of course. This was a first for him, and he became curious.

Just how much power, technology and survival tools were given to Toby?

He found out sooner than he expected as Toby seemingly vanished, all traces of his existence wiping off from the jungle. Even his footprints.

Damion’s gaze snapped to a direction, and he raised his sword, blocking a beam of yellow energy.

He smirked, thanking Dragon’s Authority for saving him in the situation.

Behind his invisibility, Toby’s frown deepened. He had used his armor to try and change the game, but somehow, Damion could still sense him.

Everything had become rough for him since Damion returned to his room on ’that’ day. From being kidnapped by the very gang he trusted, to being handed over to the Extraterrestrials, then used as a subject for various tests and experiments.

Saying he was pissed was an understatement. He was livid.

"It seems I’ll need backup," Toby muttered to himself, a signal already being sent out. "I need to take him out, lest he thwarts my plans."
