Dungeon Raider System-Chapter 205: Hybrids
"Why would they do something like that?" While Uriel was well versed in archaeology and mythology, the actual expert on cryptids of his party was Luna.
"It’s simple, really. This creatures are hybrids, they can’t reproduce by themselves and rely on humans to keep their population up, now that the soldiers already served their purpose they’ll simply let them go. Though it seems it’s been a while since any humans entered this place because they were desperate, it’s been days and they’re still mating."
"That certainly explains why the soldiers were so busy, but does that not apply to their male?" Uriel asked Luna.
"No. It seems only the female can procreate. The male of their species are tasked with protecting the female." Luna explained.
"Protecting them from what?" Nika asked worried. So far, this ’world’ seemed completely harmless.
"I know the answer to that question. At first I was confused because in the native American mythology most of their myths are about duality. For instance, according to Sam there were white and black clouds at the sky in the first world. This world was off, in the sense that everything was bright and it looked safe, but that was far from the truth."
"The brighter a light is, the darker the shadows it casts." Nika nodded, though she didn’t understand and she only spoke to sound smarter than she actually was.
"You could say that. This world doesn’t have a sun, which reaffirms the Comanche creation myth where the sun was created by the Great spirit at the third attempt."
"Wait a second, it’s sunny, how can there not be a sun." Nika interrupted.
"I’ll explain this, but first you need to understand something. This islands are floating, most likely because they’re filled with a hot gas," Just like Sam, Uriel too made the mistake of digging too deep in the ground and he paid the price, though she was able to recover much faster.
"That’s the cause of this strange fog, for some reason all heat is drawn towards the center of the islands and it causes the water on the atmosphere to condense at the top of the islands and the light that comes from above must be the result of a chemical reaction at the ceiling of this place."
"What do you mean ceiling!?"
"This place is an underground structure, we’re not in a strange world, this is a dungeon!" Uriel’s words were finally starting to make sense to the rest of the group.

"Uhm, if what you say is true then it must mean that there are hostile cryptids here too."
"Exactly, they’re nosferatu. They seem to thrive in dark places and thanks to the fog little light reaches the bottom but also, the shadows cast by the islands make the perfect habitat for them. However, since humans have long forgotten about this place, the nosferatu population is also quite low because they too need humans to procreate."
"Don’t tell me...." Nika’s eyes widened at the thought of a nosferatu and a human breeding. "You poor thing." Nika shed a tear.
"What!? I wasn’t abused by them! They reproduce by injecting their saliva into a corpse."
"This is the happiest day of my life." Luna exclaimed, though her tone was plain as usual. "This confirms my theory that all entity level cryptids are human hybrids."
"What!?" Uriel was dumbfounded. Although he himself witnessed a cryptid possessing a human and also humans turning into vampires, that was far from what Luna just proposed.
"I’ve been thinking about this since you told us the tale of the skinwalker. I remember clearly that you said they used to be human warlocks that could transform into animals and other humans as long as they had a sample of their skin, but that’s not all.
I also bumped into something when I was investigating about the Slenderman, there were some theories that it used to be a human serial killer that turned into a monster, well, an entity."
After Luna finished her explanation, Uriel remained in silence for a full minute before speaking. "Something doesn’t make sense. I don’t think humans are actually able to procreate with hybrids."
"But you said it yourself, didn’t you?" Luna seemed offended.
"No, what I said is that some cryptids may be able to infect humans..." Uriel shook his head.
"You’re right, this isn’t the confirmation I expected, but it certainly opens a new research path." Luna and Uriel discussed about that topic until Sam woke up. Luna then treated his wounded hand and Uriel offered him some food, allowing him to make it close to a full recovery.
In the meantime, the spirit people brought the soldiers one by one, though they didn’t use the rich palanquins to transport them. They looked just like Sam when he arrived, though contrary to him they all carried wide smiles.
"Look at those happy bastards!" Sam clicked his tongue in envy.
"At least now we can move forward to the next world." Although Nika’s experience in the spirit people’s world hadn’t been so bad, she was eager to go back home and eat chips watching TV.
"Not really, I took a peek at the columns surrounding the throne and there’s a problem." Uriel said with a grim tone of voice. "There’s different totems and I can’t tell which is the right one."
"We could use the soldiers as guinea pigs by throwing them at the totems." Luna proposed with a straight face.
"We can’t do something like that!" Janett was outraged by her cold heart.
"Janett is right," Uriel declared, leaving everyone in awe. Of all the people present, no one expected Uriel to care about the soldiers. "even if we do it, we wouldn’t be able to tell if it’s they arrived safely to the next world or if they were sent somewhere else." He continued in a way much more faithful to his character.
"Then how can we go back?"
"I think our only option is to get ourselves exiled." Uriel shrugged his shoulders. Experience tales at novelbuddy
"Hey, what you’re saying is that someone will have to, you know, do it with the swallow chief’s wife." Sam spoke, his all seeing eyes glimmering in hope.
