Dungeon Raider System-Chapter 634: Life in the fast lane Part 1
The halls of the Cryptid hunting agency had never been so crowded in the megacity of Hollywood like after the governor revealed the presence of cryptids inside the city due to an alleged breach in the city walls.
It didn't matter their rank, even the flimsy evolved who were barely stronger than the average human turned up to help in their city defense to prevent something like what happened to their neighboring city to befall upon theirs.
Also, after the gates remained closed for so long, most hunters were in dire need of work which only increased their wish to hunt anything that moved. Unfortunately to them, just because they now knew there were cryptids inside the city didn't mean they were easy to find which explained why everyone showed up at the doors of the agency in charge of assigning jobs to hunters.
Usually, the Cryptid hunting agency's job was as easy as identifying the threat level of a sector and assigning hunters to that specific location depending on their number and rank. This reduced the chance that two different teams would bump into each other and allowed the Cryptid hunting agency to cover more ground and update the threat level of a territory depending on the reports they received.
But things now were different since they had no clue where to even start and they had way more hunters than they knew what to do with them.
Inside her office, the head of the Hollywood cryptid hunting agency whose hunter name was Alioth like the epsilon star in the Ursa major constellation, cowered behind her desk despite being one of the strongest heavenly rank hunters in the city. Her physical prowess was nothing compared to the power behind her trait, but her character and demeanor didn't match her fame or power.
"Miss Alioth, there's someone here looking for you." One of the clerks announced after entering the office without bothering knocking.
"I know! That's precisely why I'm hiding! I can't face them, if I tell them I don't know where to find any cryptids they'll come at me with pitchforks and torches, those savages!"
"Those savages as you call them are all under your care," The clerk sighed already aware of her boss' quirks. "I think you'll want to meet with this huntress, her name is Luna and..."
"Send her away!" Alioth shivered and hid under the desk. Instead of following her commands, the clerk nodded at Luna who entered the office.
"Uhm... hi." Luna said in a monotone, her sweet voice youthful voice and her calm demeanor managed to lure the cowardly huntress from her hiding spot. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
"Good morning, are you looking for your mom?" Said Alioth after quickly composing herself. She couldn't give any answers to the hunters outside, but at least she could point a kid in the right direction, or so she thought.
"I brought information about cryptids," Luna placed a thick folder on top of the awestruck woman who became only more shocked after turning a few pages and finding out the girl wasn't lying. "This is incredible! Who sent this?"
"I did." Luna extended the palm of her hand towards Alioth, who gave her a handful of candy from the bowl in her desk as a treat.
"Thank you! Thank you so much!" Alioth was now ready to hop into action and she readily handed the folder to the clerk.
"This is... nice, but I want money. My boss, he will punish me if I don't come back with money." Luna said in a low voice and finished with a whisper knowing that she already screwed up. She was supposed to strike a deal first and only then hand the folder to the woman in front of her, but she was so nervous and did everything wrong in a panic.
"Your boss, does he hit you?" Alioth turned to see the small girl with pity in her eyes.
"Uhm... yes." Luna nodded thinking back on a few occasions where Uriel did hit her, like when he fought against her in her werewolf form or when they took Nika's class.
"And this information, where did it come from?" Alioth asked the clerk to serve Luna a hot chocolate while asking Luna as many questions as she could, finding each answer more unsettling than the last.
Luna told her how she ran away from home at a tender age from her sister from whom she was separated by Uriel, who also forced her into living with him when he spent all the money she earned without even asking.
She also mentioned the long hours she spent studying and researching cryptids glossing over the fact that it was her own choice and if it weren't for Uriel and Nika, she would have spent even more time in her room.
Alioth attentively listened to everything Luna had to say, making a sob story in her mind that couldn't differ more from the truth due to Luna being unable to understand the meaning behind all her questions. Luna limited herself to answer any question the head of the Cryptid hunting agency without bothering to explain the context.
As long as the nice woman in front of her kept feeding her treats she was content and she made quick work of all the pastries and sweets Alioth gave her which only confirmed her suspicions that Luna was being mistreated.
'Who could be so cruel they would keep a cute girl like this captive and not even bother to feed her properly?' Alioth could barely hold the tears in her eyes when the same clerk walked in again.
"Not now, I'm busy." Alioth wiped her tears with a hand, then sneezed on a tissue. Before the clerk could even answer a fierce looking woman burst inside the office like she owned it, followed by a shy girl who tailed her like she was stuck to her back.
"I'm here to hunt, point the way and I'll kill them." Sharp put one foot on top of Alioth's desk keeping her hand on the sword's hilt directly above her shoulder.
"I said I'm busy." Alioth's eyes shimmered in a cold rage enhanced by the tears still nesting on her pupils, though her display did little to intimidate the former ranger or anyone for that matter.
At that moment, Luna started sniffing the air as she realized something strange. Alioth smell was mild and sweet while Sharp's was somewhat sour like she hadn't bathed in days, yet it wasn't the huntress lack of hygiene what shook her but the fact that the woman behind Sharp had no smell at all.
"Cryptid." Luna accused in a bellowed growl bristling like a cat to which the scentless girl replied by shaking her head and cowering behind Sharp.
"Is it bring your daughter to work day or something?" Sharp grabbed Luna by the hoodie lifting her like a stray kitten.
"Let go..." Luna warned, though she didn't attempt to release herself. Something in the woman's face made her think she was forgetting something.
'Did I leave the stove on? No, I don't have a stove.' Luna inwardly thought a series of possibilities.
"This isn't my child, she's a huntress. Now wait outside for your turn, please." Alioth grumbled the last part as though challenging Sharp to defy her orders inside her own office.
"Lily, show her." Sharp muttered.
Prompted by her words, the holy rank huntress started channeling her flux with such intensity the entire square the Cryptid hunting agency building ws located on started trembling, water pipes in all directions started leaking first then burst out with the power of an explosive device and the full extent of her power was showcased in front of those present causing Alioth's vision to blur.
'That's the girl Uriel mentioned... the...' Luna's consciousness faded as she lacked the resistance to foreign flux signatures heavenly rank hunters possessed.
Channeling flux at someone else's place was considered an offense by hunters, but such a vast amount of energy was the fastest way to prove to the head of the Cryptid's hunting agency that Lily was a holy rank hunter. IDs could be faked and people could be impersonated, but the ability to harness such energy was impossible to imitate.
"You... what's your name miss?" Alioth asked the holy rank huntress, though the one who replied was Sharp.
"Her name is Lily, but she won't talk to anyone. Now, tell us where to go or we'll look around by ourselves and we won't leave a stone unturned... or unharmed." Sharp said in a toothy grin. After being forced into hiding for so long and taking menial jobs just to get by, the heavenly rank huntress was more than eager to stretch her limbs and earn some serious credits for that.
"Certainly, I'll find you a fitting job." Alioth replied with a grin of her own. Sharp's attitude had certainly gone under her skin, but her day kept improving by the second and she could barely hold the excitement of becoming the handler of a holy rank huntress as it would bury her incompetence under piles of credits and flux orbs.
