Dungeon Raider System-Chapter 756: Brother Saint Part 1
Chasing after an animal in the dark was better said than done. In spites of Uriel's heavenly rank, Dash skill and ability to summon a gas lantern from his trait it turned out to be way more difficult than tracking down a cryptid.
Contrary to cryptids or hunters, regular animals had barely a trace amount of flux energy which amounted to little more than white noise even with the glasses that allowed Uriel to see flux energy.
This didn't mean Uriel was unable to actually catch a monkey or any amount of monkeys he wanted as he moved faster than any animal possibly could, but he needed to find the specific monkey that snatched his hat which proved to be a challenge in its own.
"Dammit!" Uriel snarled as he dusted the fedora hat after finding it laying around by the beach. "the time I wasted chasing after than monkey will come out of my sleep." He regretfully said and then got lost in the beautiful sight of a calm sea that reflected the starry sky like a black mirror.
"Beautiful night, huh?" Asked a man with a long fishing rod and a bucket by the side.
"It sure is." Uriel found himself replying before even thinking. "what are you doing here?"
"What does it look like I'm doing?" The man looked at Uriel with an annoyed expression on his face, to which Uriel replied shortly.
"Certainly not fishing, your bucket is empty."
"I'll give you points for the quick comeback, Uriel." The man chuckled.
"Who the fuck are you?" Uriel jumped back and grabbed the Red thread of fate from his trait. Finding a man in the middle of nowhere wasn't necessarily strange since Uriel had yet to detect a single cryptid despite running around the peninsula for what seemed like hours, it also wasn't strange that the man didn't emit any flux signature. But the fact that he knew his name could only spell trouble.
"Calm down, I've been expecting you," The man replied, then continued with a more serious tone. "for a long time."
"Answer my question." Uriel said calmly, but kept his guard up just in case.
"I could tell you my name, but where would be the fun in that? Why don't you put down that weapon and play with me? If you win, I'll tell you what you need to know."
"What if I lose?" Uriel asked.
"Then I will tell you what you want to know." The man shrugged.
"What are the rules?" Figuring it was a win win situation, Uriel decided to play along with the man unaware that time was a luxury he couldn't afford.
"The one who catches more fish will win, oh, but you'll have to use a fishing rod. Using other methods isn't allowed."
"I don't have one." Uriel replied, despite being able to summon a fishing rod from his souvenir shop.
"Then it's my win," The man chuckled, then handed Uriel a fishing rod when his eyes began to glimmer as he channeled flux energy. "calm down, would you? I was just messing with you."
"You're funny," Uriel sarcastically remarked as he snatched the fishing rod from the man he was now able to see in full under the light of his lantern. He didn't look like much, but was a lot younger than he expected. "how does this work?"
"Kid, do I look like I know what I'm doing? You just throw the line and wait for something to bite." The man said and did precisely what he said.
"This is taking a while, huh." Uriel scoffed after five minutes passed with nothing biting.
"Some things in life can't be rushed. It doesn't matter how bad you want the fish to bite, all you can do is wait for them to make the mistake." The man said.
"I don't get it. Why bother challenging me to something like this if none of us can do anything. If it's up to the fish, then we have no say in who wins." Uriel snarled.
"That's precisely what I want to teach you." The man nodded, then started pulling on the line and caught a beautiful mullet and promptly placed it in the bucket.
"This isn't fair." Uriel complained.
"That's life for you." The man chuckled, then cast his line once more and not two minutes after another fish bit.
"This is stupid," Uriel grunted, then continued mimicking the man's voice. "that's life for you, kid."
"No, actually, life isn't stupid. Both stupidity and intelligence can only be attributed to sentient beings." The man laughed as he caught one fish after the other.
"You must be cheating! How come you have so many and no fish bothers biting my bait."
"Fish aren't smart, but they're not stupid either. It can be said that all life holds some sort of wisdom and you can learn from them, but that's only if you're willing to listen." The man said with a ceremonious expression.
Uriel then followed the man's instructions and cleared his mind in a different way than usual. He wasn't attempting to focus on his mystical sense but rather just waiting for something to happen encompassed by the rhythmic sound of the waves.
He felt as though his own consciousness came and went as time progressed at different rates, yet he was still to catch his first fish and when he turned to look at the man he was met with something he wasn't expecting.
"It seems you've gotten the grasp of it." The man said with a cheerful expression when Uriel's face became pale.
"You're an angel!?" Uriel gasped when the man's true form was revealed in front of him. The middle age man now looked magnificent despite his two day old stubble of a beard and his carefree attitude. Light seemed to emanate from him, but without actually illuminating anything and two beautiful white wings came off from his shoulder.
"Knowledge is more valuable than gold and I'm willing to offer it to you, be it what you want to know or what you need to know. But that is only if you either win or lose."
