Dynasty Awakening: Building My Own Football Empire-Chapter 215: Flying Dutchman
BARNSLEY 0 - 2 CHELSEA
It was minute 35. The rain was falling harder. The mood in the stadium was flat. The heavy metal football of The Hammer was not working. It was too slow. It was too clunky.
Cole Palmer was running the show. The Chelsea midfielder looked like he was playing in a park with his friends. He received the ball again. He did not look at the ball. He looked at the crowd.
"He is mocking us Boss," Arthur Milton whispered. Arthur was hiding behind his coat. "He is playing with his food."
"We are not food Arthur," Michael said through gritted teeth. "We are Misfits."
On the pitch Diego Nunez was furious. The Bull was chasing shadows.
"Stand still!" Diego roared at Nkunku. "Why do you move so much? Fight me like a tree!"
Nkunku did not fight like a tree. He passed the ball to Nicolas Jackson.
Jackson was through on goal.
The Barnsley defense had split open like a broken zipper.
It looked like 3 to 0.
But then The Flying Dutchman arrived.
Jan Visser came off his line. He spread his arms. He looked massive.
Jackson shot low.
Jan Visser dived. He saved it with his right hand.
The ball bounced out to Mudryk.
Mudryk smashed it.
Jan Visser was still on the floor. He kicked his leg up like a karate master.
THUD.
The ball hit his boot and flew over the bar.
The crowd erupted. It was a double save. It was a miracle.
Jan Visser stood up. He beat his chest.
"I AM NOT A GHOST!" Jan screamed. "I AM A WALL! A DUTCH WALL!"
THE INJURY BLOW
The save woke the team up. But the football gods were not done playing games.
Minute 40
Chelsea attacked again. They were relentless.
Mudryk sprinted down the wing. Benjamin Pavard was chasing him.
Pavard was a World Cup winner. He knew how to defend. He slid in to block the cross.
His boot got caught in the turf.
SNAP.
Pavard rolled over. He did not get up. He waved his hand frantically.
Michael felt his stomach drop.
"Not again," Michael whispered. "Please not again."
The physio ran on. He made the X sign with his arms.
"Change!" the physio shouted.
"Pavard is done," Arthur said sadly. "His ankle is the size of a melon."
Michael looked at the bench. He had to make a change before halftime. He had to reshuffle the deck.
"Tom," Michael said. "Get ready. You go to right back. Sergio move to the center."
SUBSTITUTION
OFF: Benjamin Pavard (Injured)
ON: Tom
Barnsley limped to the halftime whistle.
THE HALFTIME ROULETTE
In the dressing room the air was thick with frustration.
0 to 2. One injury. And zero shots on target.
Jean Luc Dubois sat on the bench. He looked angry. He was crushing a plastic cup in his hand.
"They do not cross," Jean Luc grunted. "I wait in the box. I wait for the cheese. But the cheese never comes."
"They press us too high," Leo Stone said. The young midfielder was sweating buckets. "I cannot lift my head."
Michael walked to the center.
"Listen," Michael said. "We are slow. We look like tractors racing Formula One cars."
He looked at Diego Nunez.
"Diego. Stop chasing them. You are leaving holes."
"I want to bite them," Diego said.
"No biting," Michael said. "We need chaos. Controlled chaos."
He looked at the bench. He saw Jamie Vardy.
The veteran striker was drinking a Red Bull. He looked relaxed.
"Jamie," Michael said.
"Yes Boss?"
"Finish your drink. You are coming on."
"Who for?" Arthur asked. "A defender?"
"No," Michael said. "For a midfielder. We go 4 2 4. We go reckless."
SUBSTITUTION AT HALFTIME
OFF: Leo Stone
ON: Jamie Vardy
"Jamie," Michael said. "Go annoy them. Go be a rat."
Jamie Vardy grinned. It was a mischievous grin.
"I love being a rat Boss."
THE SECOND HALF EXPLOSION
The teams walked out.
Chelsea looked comfortable. Barnsley looked desperate.
But Jamie Vardy changed the energy instantly.
Minute 48
The whistle blew. Vardy sprinted straight at Thiago Silva.
"You look old!" Vardy shouted at the Brazilian defender. "Do you need a walking stick?"
Thiago Silva ignored him but he rushed his pass.
The ball fell to Jean Luc Dubois.
The Tank controlled it. He was thirty yards out.
He did not pass. He put his head down and ran.
It was like watching a boulder roll down a hill. Nothing could stop it.
Caicedo tried to tackle him. He bounced off.
Disasi tried to pull his shirt. The shirt stretched but Jean Luc kept going.
He entered the box.
He smashed the ball.
It was not a placement shot. It was pure violence.
The ball flew past the goalkeeper before he could even blink.
GOAL.
Barnsley 1. Chelsea 2.
The Fortress roared.
Jean Luc did not celebrate. He ran into the net picked up the ball and ran back to the center circle.
"MORE CHEESE!" Jean Luc shouted.
THE CHELSEA RESPONSE
Minute 55
But Chelsea were dangerous.
They kicked off and went straight on the attack.
Cole Palmer was too clever. He drifted into the space where Leo Stone used to be.
He played a one two with Nkunku.
The Barnsley defense was too high. They were chasing the equalizer.
Nkunku broke the line.
Jan Visser came out again.
"BIG WALL!" Jan shouted.
But Nkunku squared it to Mudryk.
Mudryk had an empty net.
He tapped it in.
GOAL.
Chelsea 3. Barnsley 1.
The stadium deflated like a popped balloon.
"It is over Boss," Arthur said putting his head on his knees. "We fight but we die."
"It is never over," Michael said. "Look at Jamie."
THE VARDY PARTY
Minute 60
Jamie Vardy was not looking at the scoreboard. He was looking at the Chelsea goalkeeper Sanchez.
Sanchez had the ball at his feet. He was waiting for his defenders to move.
Vardy was lurking. He was hiding behind the referee.
Sanchez took a touch.
Vardy sprinted.
"BOO!" Vardy shouted.
Sanchez panicked. He tried to kick it long.
The ball hit Vardy on the back.
It rebounded towards the goal.
Victor Osimhen was there. The Masked Assassin.
He did not hesitate. He bicycle kicked the loose ball into the empty net.
GOAL.
Barnsley 2. Chelsea 3.
"It is a circus goal!" Arthur shouted jumping up. "But it counts! The clowns are back in town!"
Jamie Vardy ran to the Chelsea fans and cupped his ear.
"I CANNOT HEAR YOU!" Vardy screamed.
THE INJURY CURSE RETURNS
Minute 65
The momentum had swung. The crowd was going crazy.
Barnsley were attacking in waves.
Diego Nunez won the ball. He passed to Jean Luc.
Jean Luc held it up. He passed to Osimhen.
Osimhen turned.
But then... tragedy.
Enzo Silva the Pitbull was running down the left wing. He was supporting the attack.
He stopped suddenly. He grabbed his hamstring.
He fell to the ground.
"No," Michael whispered. "Not Enzo. Not the Pitbull."
The referee stopped the game.
Enzo was crying. He punched the grass.
"My leg!" Enzo shouted. "The engine is broken!"
"We have no more defenders on the bench Boss," Arthur panicked. "We used Tom. We used all the subs."
"We have Amara," Michael said. "The winger. Put him at left back."
SUBSTITUTION
OFF: Enzo Silva (Injured)
ON: Amara
"Amara!" Michael shouted. "You are a defender now! Do not let them pass!"
"I have never defended in my life Boss!" Amara shouted back looking terrified.
"Today you learn!" Michael yelled.
THE EQUALIZER
Minute 68
Barnsley had a winger at left back. A veteran striker chasing lost causes. And two giants up front.
It was a mess. But it was a beautiful mess.
Chelsea were confused. They did not know who to mark.
Amara got the ball on the left. He did not know how to defend so he just attacked.
He ran past Gusto.
He crossed the ball. A high hanging cross.
Jean Luc Dubois was at the back post.
"I AM THE TOWER!" Jean Luc roared.
He jumped. He was so high his head was level with the crossbar.
He headed it back across the goal.
Victor Osimhen was waiting.
But he could not reach it.
The ball fell into the six yard box.
It was a scramble. Mud. Legs. Panic.
Then a boot appeared.
It was Diego Nunez.
The Bull had run forward. He did not know why. He just felt the call of the chaos.
He poked the ball with his big toe.
It rolled slowly. Very slowly.
It hit the post.
It rolled along the line.
Jamie Vardy slid in. He took the ball and the post and the net with him.
GOAL.
Barnsley 3. Chelsea 3.
Minute 70
The stadium shook so hard that Arthur Milton fell off his chair.
"WE ARE ALIVE!" Arthur screamed from the floor. "WE ARE IMMORTAL!"
Jamie Vardy ran to the corner flag and snapped it in half. Again.
"Another fine," Arthur cried happy tears. "I do not care! Send the bill!"
Diego Nunez hugged Jean Luc.
"We are the Bash Brothers!" Diego shouted. "We bashed them!"
Michael Sterling stood on the touchline. His heart was racing at a million beats per minute.
He looked at the scoreboard.
BARNSLEY 3 - 3 CHELSEA
TIME: 70:00
They had come back from the dead. They had lost two defenders. They were playing a formation that did not exist in any tactical book.
But they were level.
Mauricio Pochettino looked stunned. He was staring at Jamie Vardy like he was a bad dream.
Michael looked at his watch.
Twenty minutes left.
The game was not over. In fact with this crazy team the game was never over until the lights went out.
"Push!" Michael roared to his players. "We do not settle for a draw! We go for the kill!"
