Chapter 256 -256: Eradicating the Enemy’s Military Fortress in the Secret Realm (1)

This was a particularly dangerous slope.

Due to the obstruction of the thick fog, the path ahead from the direction she had come was utterly obscured, and with the weather being cold, the piercing wind blew from all directions against her face, making it difficult to keep one’s eyes open. Just a moment of carelessness, a misstep, and her life could be over.

Ye Nai lay on the damp, icy grass looking downward, unable to see anything but a dense fog; the depth was unknown, only the feedback from the released spores indicated that below was filled with human and animal skeletons.

Standing up, Ye Nai returned to the vehicle’s side, took out her newly purchased mobile toilet which had an electric temperature-controlled instant water heater fitted over the regular cold-water tap; expensive at over seven hundred, but it was truly useful in the bitter cold, and could be removed when the weather was hot.

She brushed her teeth and washed her face, then went back inside the vehicle to cook a warm breakfast.

After eating her fill and tidying up, in the Space, the energy from the altar that had been absorbed was completely devoured by the fungus, leaving behind a pile of residue.

Having resolved the most challenging first step, the Sky Smoke Secret Realm action to sever the enemy’s retreat by collecting altars officially began.

She stored the RV into the Space, then used Space Teleportation to reach the second location. She released protective spores to clear the area while simultaneously releasing spores into the soil beneath her feet. Afterwards, she took out the RV, set up a computer desk, and started learning planting techniques for pastures.

About two hours later, a faint activity in the Space indicated that a second altar had arrived.

Ye Nai grinned, collected the RV, and headed to the third location.

This was far more efficient than doing the work herself.

In this manner, Ye Nai collected six or seven altars daily in the Sky Smoke Secret Realm, amassing nearly forty in five days.

On the fifth day, seeing there was still some time before nightfall, Ye Nai planned to claim another altar and spend the night there.

As soon as the Space Teleportation landed, Ye Nai was staggered by her surroundings.

She was standing on a tamped earth square, with an altar excavated from the soil beside her, surrounded by streets and rough wooden houses, and further away, the city walls were visible.

The people bustling through the streets all had the same dark yellow skin and tall builds typical of the Otherworld enemies.

Her sudden appearance also startled the city’s inhabitants. They took off their weapons and, chattering incomprehensibly, charged at Ye Nai.

“It’s this exciting?!”

“Oh my God!”

Ye Nai didn’t retreat. She quickly backed against the altar and took out a machine gun from the Space. While running circles around the altar, she sprayed gunfire at their legs to break their charge and scattered a massive amount of spores towards the oncoming enemies from all directions.

Aiming for the legs was effective; those who fell blocked those behind them, and during those crucial three to five seconds the spores had already spread, taking any person they touched into the Space.

But their yelling and the sound of gunfire attracted even more enemies. Ye Nai looked around and her scalp tingled.

There were at least a few hundred people.

Plus, given the rather complete state of the buildings, it was obvious that this was a well-established Military Fortress of the enemy.

She really did it, arriving right on target.

Ye Nai still didn’t retreat. She had the upper hand, no reason to retreat.

The enemies on the surrounding city walls drew their bows.

Seeing the dangerous situation, Ye Nai quickly threw a handful of spores into the soil beneath the altar, then immediately vanished from the spot, reappearing atop the city walls using Space Teleportation.

The volley of arrows shot by the enemies missed their target, sticking into the ground around the altar, creating a dense fence of arrows.

Ye Nai landed quietly and took advantage of the enemy still scrambling on the castle walls, searching for her below. Seizing the opportunity, she steadied her gun and swept their legs, catching them off guard, and then threw out handfuls of spores, pulling all the enemies into Space.

Within seconds, this part of the castle wall was completely emptied. Enemies on the other three walls, realizing something was amiss and unable to shoot arrows, broke into a run towards her.

Yet, the Military Fortress was quite large, and it took some time to run around the walls, which gave Ye Nai a moment to lean against the wall and catch her breath.

Damn, that was thrilling.

Ye Nai inserted a new magazine, chambered a round, and raised her gun to the sky in preparation for the possibility of someone flying over.

At both ends of the occupied wall, a copious amount of spores created a barrier. Any enemy who charged into the spore defense line vanished on the spot, becoming dead things inside Ye Nai’s Space.

While on guard, Ye Nai took the opportunity to glance into her Space. In just a short amount of time, the bodies of enemies she had collected numbered over a hundred.

But looking down at the ground, small squads of enemies kept pouring out from the fortress’s doorways on various floors beneath the castle walls, running up along the wall ramparts. Many even dressed in leather armor and arranged their weapons as they ran.

At this point, Ye Nai still hadn’t entertained the slightest notion of a temporary retreat.

Why retreat when the advantage is ours?

A sturdy spore defense line pushed forward along both ends of the wall, clearing the entire wall while securing the four corner stairwells. No matter how many enemies charged up, it was a death sentence.

Ye Nai gripped her gun tightly, constantly on high alert.

Wave after wave of enemy soldiers, who kept coming to their demise, finally caught on. Their soldiers vanished without a trace as soon as they reached the stairwells of the fortress walls. Given the limited military strength inside the fortress, they couldn’t afford to keep suffering losses. Tactics changed, and the accompanying Priest was called upon to send soldiers directly onto the castle walls.

Ye Nai, sitting with her back against the castle wall and head tucked in, sprang to her feet upon hearing intermittent singing. She positioned her gun on the battlement.

Her excellent dynamic vision allowed her to clear her enemies’ direction of gathering just as she aimed her gun. She fired, disrupting the enemy’s spellcasting, not caring whether she hit anyone, as the spores followed closely behind the bullets, taking that group of people all at once. Afterward, she swept the scene, clearing the ground of the remaining enemy forces.

With that, the offensive finally halted.

Nobody else was running out. All one could see were shadows moving in and out of the doorways on each floor.

The relentless enemies charging towards the fortress wall stairwells also turned to retreat indoors.

Ye Nai waited for this moment. She launched another massive wave of spores, following the retreating enemies into the different floors of the fortress and sealing the entry points.

Next, the spores began sweeping through the fortress.

No matter where the enemy hid or how tightly they sealed doors and windows, the spores infiltrated every room, silently whisking people away.

Ye Nai exhaled, but she didn’t fully relax. Her gun remained in hand, vigilant for any stragglers that might emerge before the spores finished their sweep.

Especially since she had been concerned about the strange singing she heard earlier. From history lessons, she knew that sometimes the enemy would have a fully tattooed “Priest” among them. These Priests could grant soldiers bizarre enhancements, increasing their combat effectiveness on the battlefield, encouraging them to charge fearlessly and fight to the death.

Ye Nai pondered whether that strange singing could be a Priest granting enhancements.

Considering the size of the Military Fortress and the number of soldiers it housed, it wouldn’t be strange to have a frail Priest in tow.

When she thought of the Military Fortress, Ye Nai suddenly sat upright.

With the earlier intense tension, she hadn’t had time to think, but now she realized what was off.

On the fortress’s side of the wall, there was no dense fog at all. Despite the cold, the visibility was clear and normal.
