Enemies Are All Nourishment for My Fungi-Chapter 311: Scavenging for Supplies in the Countryside Manor
"Great Witch, I’m the steward left in charge here, and I have all the keys on me. Let me take you," said a male servant as he took off a jangling bunch of keys from around his waist.
"Is it far?"
"We need to follow the road in front of the door, go around to the back, and pass through a small grove of trees. It’ll take a while to walk."
"Alright, I’ll take you, and everyone else can organize the stuff."
Ye Nai put the carriage and the Baroness into the Space and cast two spores at Old Guan, attempting to teleport with him without making contact.
It worked smoothly, successful on the first try.
In the blink of an eye, the two of them arrived on the other side of the small grove that the old steward had mentioned.
The first thing they saw were four huge silos.
The old steward, his hair turning grey with age, had experienced such a thrilling adventure for the first time in his life. His body swayed from one place to another and he was a bit unsteady on his feet when he landed, hurriedly steadying himself with a small tree to avoid falling over.
"Is that grain inside?"
"Yes, all grain," the old steward said, covering his wildly pounding chest and speaking a bit breathlessly.
"Is the autumn harvest over now?" Ye Nai saw his discomfort, and while making it a human experiment, she fine-tuned the remaining bit of spore energy inside him to ease his breathlessness.
"It finished before the weather got cold. What’s inside are all this year’s new grains, not yet transported away."
Superpower spores were capable of anything and always achieved Ye Nai’s wishes. The old steward’s shortness of breath settled down in an instant, and his dizziness and leg weakness disappeared. He expressed his surprise and gratitude to Ye Nai with a bow.
"Transported away? To where?"
"Each year after the autumn harvest, the Baron sends a team to take it away. Exactly where it is sent to the battlefield, I do not know."
"Okay, let’s go and get the grain."
Old Guan, carrying the keys, led Ye Nai to the silos. He unlocked each door in turn, revealing bags of grain piled from the wooden pallets on the ground up to the towering tops.
Ye Nai looked through each silo, and seeing that they were all full, she unceremoniously took everything.
Beyond the silos filled with grain, there were several large warehouses, which stored vast amounts of cloth, salt, sugar, and other strategic materials.
"All of these were accumulated in the domain this year."
"Does the Baron take away so much to the battlefield every year?"
"Yes, so much is taken away every year. If you had come a few days later, maybe the materials would already have been taken away by the Baron."
"When do they usually arrive?"
"It’s hard to say, sometimes they come while we’re still busy with the harvest, and sometimes they only arrive just before winter sets in."
"They only come to take away the materials just before winter? Don’t you find that strange? Isn’t it too late by then to make winter clothes?"
"We servants don’t concern ourselves with matters on the battlefield. The Baron’s troops come through the Transmission Platform, and my duty is to ensure they take away exactly what they have come for. What they do with it afterwards is not my concern."
"Fine, let’s go back to the old mansion to have a look; I’ll pick out some useful furniture. After I leave, you all can divide up the stuff in the house and then disperse. Don’t run into the soldiers; as you know, things can get nasty then."
"Yes, thank you for your kindness, Great Witch."
Ye Nai instantly emptied the warehouse and teleported back to the entrance of the mansion with Old Guan.
She walked into the old mansion, looked around upstairs and downstairs, and only took a liking to the dining room table and chairs.
The furniture in the house was made of good materials and craftsmanship, but after seeing the furniture in the city’s luxurious residences yesterday, Ye Nai felt that most of the furniture in the old house was made of too ordinary materials.
She took a liking to the dining table and chairs mainly because the old house was going to host a banquet. The dining room was a place to entertain guests, and to display wealth without being mocked, the same high-quality wood as in the city’s grand houses was used.
After she finished, Ye Nai disappeared from the spot, "Space Teleportation" took her back to the fork in the wilderness path.
She walked into the wilds and took out the two-story building and the portable toilet to rest on the spot.
Having driven from early morning until noon, no matter how comfortable the seat was, her back stiffened, and she needed to rest, or she wouldn’t be able to hold up in the afternoon.
Her original mission was to swallow up the Marabene Military Fortress and then return to Blue Star to see if the enemy, who had abandoned the frontline fortresses for relocation, had reached their destination.
However, after learning about the Wizard Academy and the Duke Lord City of Ackerley, she also wanted to take a look.
Calculating the time, it had been exactly one day and one night since yesterday, which would have only been 24 minutes on Blue Star. She could still stay a few more days here.
After resting for an hour, Ye Nai continued on her way by car.
She spent the whole afternoon on the road, randomly scaring travelers along the way, and there were no other novelties.
As night was about to fall, Ye Nai was thinking of stopping the car to bring out the prisoners and give them some food and water so they wouldn’t starve to death in "Space".
Then, the scouting spores in front reported back with a discovery of a military fortress.
Ye Nai immediately perked up and continued driving.
Another two hours of driving in complete darkness followed, with no light except for her car’s headlights—no stars, just dark clouds.
When she finally saw torchlight at the end of her field of vision, she had arrived at the Marabene Military Fortress.
Ignoring the brightness of the bonfires and torches, Ye Nai could clearly see the luminous spots representing transmission platforms.
There were many luminous spots, but they were not as densely distributed as in the Beigen Military Fortress, suggesting that Marabene had a larger area.
The scouting spores, having discovered the fortress, had used those two hours to lay a fungal mat that covered the entire fortress underground. All the transmission platforms were also tightly wrapped in colorless Fungal Mycelium, waiting for Ye Nai’s command.
Without reducing her car’s speed in the slightest, Ye Nai simply communicated with the fungal mat beneath the fortress and took action.
In a matter of seconds, the spores sent back feedback—all the people had been knocked out unconscious.
Ye Nai floored the accelerator and rushed up to the gates of the Marabene Military Fortress.
The firmly shut gates of the fortress at night were no obstacle for Ye Nai. She stowed her car, used "Space Teleportation" to get on top of the city wall, then took out her off-road vehicle and turned on the roof searchlight.
Beneath the city wall was a street.
The layout was similar to the military fortress from which Ye Nai had copied the two-way Transmission Platform on Blue Star.
It was not merely a fortress for garrisoning troops; it was a small city in the style of a fortress.
The street below was deserted, but on the city wall, every few feet lay two soldiers.
At this time, it was normal for the streets to be empty except for the guards on night duty.
Surveying the entire city with a glance in the night, those luminous spots scattered throughout the city representing the transmission platforms were extremely eye-catching. Now that Ye Nai had the time, she went over to have a look at each one.
She saw that each Transmission Platform had its own separate small courtyard to ensure a secure space free from disturbance and surveillance when people and materials arrived.
The thirty transmission platforms in Beigen Military Fortress were all housed together in a square plaza, likely indicative of a different use—Beigen’s were probably purely military.
Thinking of the little witch from the Baron’s House who could continuously travel through the transmission platforms of this Marabene Military Fortress to reach the Wizard Academy, it was clear that this place served both military and civilian purposes.
