Chapter 294: When it starts to suffocate you

’’That’s good.’’

Cardan smiled. Here she went around acting like she did not care about anything and there she was, being concerned by the tale of some unrelated people.

"What do we need for the spell?"

"All we need to have is a Nyxenna in its full bloom and a drop of my blood.’’

"Those flowers are very rare. It will be hard to find them because they forage on poison to grow," she frowned.

He nodded, ’’When you told me the reason we are here in Visteria, I had dispatched some of my shadow guards to look for it. The Enchantment forest has poisonous swamps so we should be able to find it.’’

’’You...’’ Luciana glanced at him in disbelief, ’’You had everything arranged but you watched me panicking over it?"

He coughed, ’’Isn’t it amusing to see you losing your calm?"

’’Say that again?" she glared at him as she strode towards him.

Cardan stepped back until the back of his knees bumped against the bed, ’’I am wrong. I am wrong.’’

’’That you are!" Luciana pressed her palms on his chest and pushed him away.

Before he fell back, he grabbed her hand and took her down with him such that both of them landed on the bed with her lying atop him.

’’Did you expect me to sit still and do nothing while you are anxious?" Cardan wrapped his arms around her waist.

Luciana remained quiet. He seemed uncaring about such things so she did not expect him to do all these.

"Maybe I owe Maverick that much for everything I did to him," Cardan added after some time.

Luciana sighed before she leaned closer to him and placed her lips on his, ’’You had your reason. We don’t have control over everything. As long as everything turns out to be fine and you know not to do it again, the past is longer important.’’

’’I do not care what people think about me, Lucy. Nor do I fear any retribution,’’ Cardan stroked her hair, ’’But I played with his love for his dead wife. I am worried someone will play with our love someday. That is the only retribution I dread.’’

Luciana’s eyes widened briefly, ’’Stop worrying unnecessarily. It is all in the past,’’ she kissed his forehead before she looked into his eyes, ’’Also, who gave you the assurance to phrase it like that? Our love? Who loves you?"

’’You do, don’t you?" his bottom lips jutted up slightly.

This adorable man.

She rolled her eyes, ’’I do not love you.’’

’’Then why are we lying here on the bed? In each other’s arms like this?" he glared.

Luciana kissed his chin as she laughed, ’’For your beauty, of course. If one day you are no longer this beautiful then I won’t spare you a second glance.’’

’’Hmph!" he grabbed the back of her neck and captured her lips.

’’One day, you will realize your true feelings for me and admit it,’’ he whispered when their lips parted.

And before she could catch her breath, he flipped her and pinned her to the bed as his fingers undid her clothes with expertise.

Soon after, the sounds of moans reverberated in the walls of the empty room.

...

Past Midnight, Enchanctmemt Forest.

’’I have heard that there are beasts inside this place,’’ the dried leaves cracked under her feet as Luciana stepped forward, ’’But I have never come across one.’’

Cardan glanced at her face before looking at the candle in her hand. He leaned closer and blew it out.

’’You...’’ Luciana glared at him. The trees were tall and dense and the moonlight barely infiltrated the forest.

Before she could complain, he raised his hand and a golden glow emerged on his palm, taking the form of a ball. The ball then ascended above their head, lightening their path.

"Am I not useful, Lucy?" Cardan held her hand, clinging to her.

Luciana released a breath, ’’You are clingy.’’

Cardan smiled victoriously, ’’Then let me cling to you.’’

She smiled helplessly.

Cardan looked at her face for another moment before he answered her question, ’’There are beasts in here but the enchantment forest has parts. The deeper you go, the more dangerous it is. The ancestors of the Daven Family set a barrier around the deeper parts of the forest which is why no one can escape outside from there. They did it to protect the people of their kingdom. We can step inside but we can’t come out.’’

’’Then how will your guards come out?"

’’They are heavenly guards. This barrier is for mortals. It can’t hold them,’’ Cardan explained.

"I have heard Aleister was sent here when he was a child,’’ Luciana frowned, ’’To think that the King would send a child to a place like this.’’

Cardan scoffed, ’’Isn’t that imbecile dead now?"

Luciana sighed as she looked at his face, ’’He loved his nephew but I can understand where he was coming from,’’ Although she did not know much about what transpired in that underground room a year ago but she more or less knew about the relations in the Daven Family. Aleister was not the King’s son, but his nephew.

’’Love is not love when it starts to suffocate you,’’ Cardan said, stirring something inside her, ’’If the young Aleister did not possess divine powers or if he failed to release his powers, do you think he would be alive today?’’

Even though she did not say anything but Luciana agreed with him. From the look on his face, she could say that he had no remorse that the King died at his hands. Not that he ever felt things like remorse over his actions but for once, she saw a hint of satisfaction in his eyes instead.

’Love is not love when it starts to suffocate you.’

What about his mother’s love? Did it suffocate him?

Luciana glanced at him quietly.

"The young Aleister was avenged by that King’s death,’’ Although Cardan was under his mother’s control when Alexander died, he had no regrets. Cardan looked ahead, his eyes gazing into the vast stretch of the forest, ’’No one deserves to be tormented by their family, by the people they love the most.’’

Luciana lowered her head. Aleister was avenged, what about you? She wanted to ask. What about the torment your mother put you through?

"Your Highness.’’

Luciana shook off Cardan’s hand and took a step away from him when they heard the voices around them.

A moment later, his guards appeared. The men dropped to their knees in front of him.

Cardan stepped towards her and clung to her again.

"_" A vein throbbed on her forehead.

’’Your Highness...’’

’’Did you find the flower?"

’’We did but...’’

’’Why are you blabbering so much unusually?" Cardan’s tone deepened.

The men did not say anything.

’’Lead the way,’’ Cardan said to them before he looked at her, ’’Stay here.’’

Luciana shook her head, ’’I am coming with you.’’

’’Aren’t you worried about getting trapped in there?"

’’You said those spells don’t work on you. I am certain you can get me out,’’ Luciana held his hand and intertwined their fingers, ’’But I need to be there with you.’’

’’Are you worried about me?"

’’You can say that,’’ she said coldly when she saw the look on his face. Did he think he was invincible? Even if the poisonous swamps and spell did not hold him back, there were uncertainties. Wasn’t he worried about something happening to him?

’’Your Highness,’’ Another batch of guards appeared and dropped to their knees.

Cardan looked at them speechlessly.

’’You brought so many with you?" Luciana questioned.

’’My brother sure is something,’’ he looked at the guards that were lined up like ants. There were at least fifty of them.
