Ensnaring his Dark Moon-Chapter 319: Our chance
The twins glanced at Esme in astonishment.
Rory, the maid who was assigned to serve Esme looked at her in concern but she was stopped by her sister. Rose shook her head.
’’My Lady, if you need something, we will be here,’’ Rose curtsied to Esme before dragging Rory out with her.
"Why did you stop me? The lady needed help. She is bleeding,’’ Rory shrugged off her sister’s hand. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
’’Had we stayed there any longer, the ones to need help will be us,’’ Rose rolled her eyes.
The twins bickered in hushed voices as they walked away from Esme’s room, strolling in the hallway.
’’Although both of them look alike, it looks like one of you is clever than the other,’’ a voice made them halt in their tracks.
They turned around and curtsied the moment they saw Jeremiah standing behind them, ’’My Lord, forgive us for not noticing your arrival. We...’’ the twins had panic all over their faces, having been caught while talking about Esme behind her back.
Jeremiah chuckled, ’’For the past year, I have seen you both around Es.’’
’’My Lord, please forgive us. We.. We don’t mean harm to the lady. We... we were...’’ Rory was anxious.
Jeremiah shook his head, ’’Have you been serving her for the past year? I only need a few answers and you will be forgiven for your impudence.’’
Rose was the one to compose herself first, ’’We grew up around Lady Luciana and were sent to serve Lady Esmeray after her arrival in the Crystal Castle.’’
’’A few days ago, I saw you around Aleister and Cardan in the gardens. What was that about?"
Rory and Rose exchanged a glance. After a moment of hesitation, the former explained briefly, ’’They asked us to tell them about our world but in a way that to the people looking at us, it should seem like we are being intimate.’’
’’And from what I understood, it seemed like they were doing it to attract Lady Luciana’s and Lady Esme’s attention,’’ Rose continued her sister’s words, avoiding Rory’s glare.
’’Hmm, my little niece is involved in this too,’’ Jeremiah nodded, amused, ’’Which family are you both from?"
’’Finche. We are the outcasts of the Finche family,’’ Rose answered.
’’Outcasts? The Finche family is insignificant in itself and with you two being the outcasts, it makes you even more worthless,’’ Jeremiah clicked his tongue, ’’Tell me about your powers,’’ he eyed the twins, a shimmer in his gaze.
Rose lowered her head, looking ashamed. It was Rory who answered.
’’We were born without any special ability. We can transform into our mermaid forms but other than that, we are indeed worthless, my lord.’’
A hint of displeasure flickered in Jeremiah’s eyes when he heard that even though he had already expected that.
For creatures like them to give birth to twins was a rare occurrence. But once a pair twins were born, they were either born with great powers or they were born powerless.
’’No wonder they abandoned you,’’ Jeremiah did not bother to hide the disdain in his tone. Other than the King, he did not have to put up a pretense of being kind and benevolent in front of many people. At least, not now when he had nothing to lose. One day more and everything would be under his grasp.
Rose’s face paled at his words until she heard him continue.
’’But I can give you chance to prove yourself,’’ Jeremiah smiled, ’’If you do that, I will let one of you become my woman.’’
Rose’s face lit up while Rory remained unmoved.
’’And the other will be the new head of the Finche family.’’
Rory’s eyes widened.
Jeremiah was satisfied with the look on their faces and he pulled out a sachet from his robes, handing it to Rose, ’’I think you are more suitable for this task.’’
Rose hesitated for a moment before she peeked in the sachet. Her eyes widened when she saw the white powder inside it, ’’This...’’
’’My bride needs to rest and I want to soothe her nerves. Makes this easy for you, doesn’t it?" A warning flitted across his eyes as he gazed at both of them, ’’I can provide you with all that your heart desires but if you fail at this, your lives will become worse than your deaths,’’ his words were soft and so were his expressions.
With the gentleness he uttered the death threat, to an onlooker, it would look like he was offering them grace.
Once he was gone, Rory shook her head at Rose, ’’I will tell the Lady about this.’’
’’No,’’ Rose looked at her in disbelief, ’’This is our chance.’’
’’But Rose...’’
’’If we give up on this opportunity, we will die as these ordinary maids without rising in status. When we were young, we had maids serving us and now even those maids have risen in status after entangling with powerful men. What about us? What did we do to deserve this life? No one can turn the heir apparent down and you know it.’’
’’But Rose, we cannot betray the Lady. She has been kind to us. And the heir apparent is powerful...’’ Rory looked around before lowering her voice further, ’’But he is, in the end, not our King. The King is more powerful than him and our Lady is cherished by the His Majesty. She is treated like a princess. Do you know what the consequences will be if we conspire with the heir apparent to harm the Lady?"
Rose hesitated for a brief moment but she eventually straightened herself, ’’The heir apparent will have the throne in the future. If we go against him, then we will be beheaded or worse, tortured, if not now then in the future. But if we go against the King, then we will not only be safe but we will be benefited as long as the heir apparent succeeds,’’ she looked at the sachet in her hand.
She continued, ’’This is not a poison. And both of us know that this won’t harm Lady Esme. It only has sleep inducing effects and she would be in daze for the following day. Lord Jeremiah said that he is caring for his bride. So...’’
