Entangled in the Night: Unable to Escape Him-Chapter 200: The Truth Comes to Light
Several days later.
Prescott Group shareholders meeting.
Owen Paxton chaired the meeting to dismiss the president.
Ethan Prescott was the first to speak: "Silas has become a fool; he can no longer resume the position of president. Currently, in the Prescott family, only I meet the conditions. I am also the second largest shareholder of the group, so the position of president should logically go to me."
Owen Paxton looked calmly at the other shareholders: "Do any of the shareholders have opinions?"
"I oppose Ethan Prescott. If he were capable of this position, the old man wouldn’t have let 22-year-old Silas Prescott take over back then. Besides, his son Damien Prescott is also the instigator who framed Silas; he can’t be the president."
"I second that. Even if we let Owen Paxton continue to act as a proxy, we still disagree with Ethan Prescott taking over."
Upon hearing these words, Ethan Prescott was so angry his brow twitched fiercely.
He slammed the table hard and said, "What is Owen Paxton worth? He’s just a dog raised by the Prescott family. What qualification does he have to be the president?"
"That’s right. Although Owen Paxton is highly capable, he doesn’t have Prescott bloodline. Being an acting president is fine, but it’s difficult to win over the masses in the long run."
The two factions began a heated argument, with some supporting Owen Paxton’s rise and others supporting Ethan Prescott, causing chaos at the scene.
Just then, the door of the conference room was pushed open, and Sophie Sommers stood at the entrance in a black suit.
She held a document bag in her hand.
Seeing this scene, Ethan Prescott’s face turned pale: "Sophie Sommers, who let you come here? Get out!"
Facing his ex-wife, Ethan Prescott showed no sympathy.
Instead, his expression was cold and grim.
Seeing his demeanor, Sophie sneered, "I have 5% of the group’s shares, and during the recent turmoil at Prescott Group, I bought some from retail investors. Now, I own 10% of the shares. If we add the 3% in Owen Paxton’s hand, he becomes the second-largest shareholder in the group, and this presidency should go to him."
Ethan Prescott gritted his teeth: "Sophie Sommers, the old man gave you 5% of the group’s shares out of pity, and you dare use them to betray the Prescott family? Does your conscience not justify him?"
Sophie coldly laughed, "Conscience? Ever since I got together with you, I’ve lost that thing. Ethan Prescott, all of this is what you owe me."
"Humph, do you think mere shares can make you the president of the group? To be the president, besides shares, one must also be of Prescott bloodline, and Owen Paxton, an outsider, has no qualification."
"Oh really? See if he qualifies after you read this."
After saying that, she threw the paternity report to Ethan Prescott.
When he saw the report indicating a parent-child relationship between Owen Paxton and Ethan Prescott, Ethan was dumbfounded.
He looked at Sophie in disbelief: "Impossible, this report is fake. I never touched you before our divorce, how could there be a child?"
Sophie mocked with a laugh: "When I learned your illegitimate child was already five years old, I took your sperm from the Prescott family sperm bank. I wanted to give birth to a son to contend with you for property.
Ethan Prescott, how does it feel to be betrayed? Bad, right? I wanted you to taste what you put me through when you betrayed me years ago.
Now Owen Paxton is a Prescott descendant, his shares make him the second-largest shareholder; the presidency rightfully belongs to him."
Upon seeing these files and hearing her words, Ethan Prescott became so enraged his eyes turned red.
He could never imagine Sophie would secretly have a son to avenge him.
Not only is he unable to become president now, but even his youngest son was captured and put in jail by them.
His finger trembled as he pointed at Owen Paxton: "You approached Silas from the beginning with a motive. The old man trusted you so much, even giving you the presidential seal; little did he know you were a turncoat."
Owen Paxton didn’t refute but looked coldly at the shareholders present and asked, "I now own 13% of the group’s shares. Besides Silas, I am the largest shareholder. I am also of Prescott bloodline, with the paternity report as proof. Those who support me as president, stay. Those who don’t, I won’t make it hard for you. I will pay a high price to buy your shares, enough for you to retire comfortably."
No one expected that amidst the Prescott family brothers’ power struggle, an unremarkable assistant would end up on top.
Faced with this situation, some changed sides opportunistically.
Immediately, someone stood beside Owen Paxton: "I support Assistant Paxton as the president. He’s much better than Silas Prescott, who was sinister, ruthless, and unsociable. I’ve disliked him for a long time. Now heaven has eyes and made him a fool; otherwise, we’d all suffer with him."
He went on to talk about a lot of bad things about Silas Prescott, causing a few indecisive people to switch sides.
Owen Paxton calmly looked at the few people behind him.
"Are you willing to follow me?"
"Of course, we are all old subordinates of your mother. Once you rise, don’t forget to support us."
Owen Paxton glanced at Sophie: "Is what they’re saying true?"
Sophie smiled proudly: "Otherwise, do you think you can take the presidency with just your ability? I had everything set up in advance."
"Including the leak of the new smartphone design?"
"That was Silas’s own doing. Who told him to forget his laptop in the car, giving us the opportunity."
Owen Paxton nodded with a smile: "Excellent, follow me and you’ll live well."
He walked to the desk, picked up the president’s appointment letter, and was about to sign it when a cold voice sounded from outside the door.
"When did the Prescott family fall to you to speak?"
At this sound, everyone turned to look at the door.
There stood Silas Prescott in a black suit and shirt, his face stern as he walked in.
The black leather shoes hit the floor with a ’dong dong’ sound.
It was like they were stomping directly on everyone’s hearts, making them shiver.
Everyone stood hurriedly, looking at him in disbelief.
Silas Prescott glanced at everyone, then fixed his gaze on Sophie Sommers. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
A cold laughter emerged from his throat.
"Your undercover setup was hard for me to fathom."
Sophie stared at his cold sharp eyes, incredulous: "You, you’re not foolish?"
Silas sneered, bending his lips: "Are you disappointed? I must thank you for acting in this play with me; otherwise, I wouldn’t have uncovered these pests in the group linked to you. Now, I’ve removed them all."
Those who had supported Owen Paxton earlier were now trembling.
If they still couldn’t see what was happening now, they really were fools.
From start to finish, this was a plan devised by Silas Prescott, aimed at identifying the traitor among them.
A few people hurriedly bowed their heads and admitted their mistakes: "President Prescott, it was this woman who instigated us. Please give us a chance."
Silas Prescott looked at them coldly: "Didn’t you just say that following me would lead to disaster? Well, I’ll give you this chance: leave the shares behind, and leave with your person, or else I’ll leave you with nothing."
Upon hearing this, the few people didn’t dare speak anymore.
Everyone knew that Silas Prescott, despite his scholarly and elegant appearance, was actually ruthless.
He really could do something that would leave them penniless.
Silas Prescott had everyone leave temporarily.
Seeing his arrogance, Sophie Sommers sneered: "Silas Prescott, what’s the use of you coming back? Your new project gamble failed, costing the Group a lot of money. If you can’t pay, prepare to be thrown off your pedestal."
Silas Prescott raised his eyebrows slightly: "Do you really think I would bring out something I’ve been developing for years and let you leak it? I forgot to tell you, Z Group is a subsidiary I founded, and all its profits belong to Prescott Group. I didn’t lose this gamble agreement; I actually won. Ms. Sommers, aren’t you disappointed?"
Upon hearing this, all of Sophie Sommers’ confidence instantly dissolved.
The plans she had schemed for years were all broken by Silas Prescott.
She pointed at Silas and cursed: "Silas Prescott, so what if you’ve won? You’ve been an unwanted child from birth, unloved by your father and mother. Your dad, for his youngest son, went as far as to set you up. For Owen Paxton, I even wished you dead. You’re my shame. Without you, my life wouldn’t be like this, so I made sure you never felt love in your life."
Facing his own biological mother saying such things to him, Silas Prescott did not lose his temper as he used to, instead, he let out a faint smile.
He looked at Sophie indifferently: "You think you’ve been wronged in life, so you cast all your hatred for Ethan Prescott on me. Ms. Sommers, have you ever thought that you’ve always been just a pawn in someone’s game?"
After saying this, he gestured to the bodyguards behind him.
The bodyguards brought a man in.
Seeing this man, Sophie Sommers was completely stunned.
This man was her long-lost first love, Nathan Channing.
The man looked much older than his age, with many white hairs and numerous wrinkles on his face.
He was worlds apart from the elegant and handsome man Sophie remembered.
Sophie looked at him incredulously and tentatively called: "Nathan?"
Upon hearing this familiar call, Nathan Channing was overwhelmed with tears and knelt on the ground.
He grabbed Sophie’s hand and said: "I’m sorry, it was my mistake. I shouldn’t have sent you to Ethan Prescott’s bed for money, but back then I had no choice. My dad owed a lot of gambling debts, and if we didn’t repay them, they would take our family’s lives. I had no option but to send you away."
At these words, Sophie Sommers felt as if she had been struck by lightning and kept shaking her head.
"Impossible, you loved me so much, how could you bear to send me to someone else?"
Nathan Channing slapped himself several times, crying as he said: "I’m sorry, Sophie, it was my mistake. I made your life miserable. If I had a second chance, I’d rather die than sell you out."
"So back then, for money, you spiked my drink with an aphrodisiac and sent me to Ethan Prescott’s bed?"
This was the biggest misunderstanding between her and Ethan Prescott.
She believed it was Ethan who drugged her, while Ethan believed she wanted to marry him and drugged him.
No one expected that after decades, the truth would finally come out.
In her resentment towards Ethan, she distanced herself from her son, even doing things that hurt him.
It turned out, all this was orchestrated by the man she loved the most.
Her life was not ruined by Ethan Prescott, but by Nathan Channing.
Thinking about her miserable marriage, Sophie angrily raised her arm and fiercely slapped Nathan Channing.
She gritted her teeth and said: "Nathan Channing, you beast! You’ve made my whole life filled with hatred."
Seeing her like this, Ethan Prescott laughed proudly: "Sophie Sommers, you’ve created your own ruin. Wanting to seize control from the Prescott Family, how simple-minded you were."
A decade-long marriage marked by fights.
And they harmed their biological son for a decade.
But the harm was done and could never be undone.
With tears streaming down her face, Sophie Sommers looked at Silas: "Are you pleased with this result?"
Silas Prescott answered expressionlessly: "Whatever result it was has nothing to do with me. My only concern is for the people I love. Do you know why, knowing full well it was you causing trouble, I still played along with you?"
"You wanted to uncover the traitor within the Group."
"That’s only part of it. Another reason is I want to take back the five percent of the shares my grandfather gave you. That’s a Prescott Family asset, and you don’t deserve it."
Seeing him without a shred of sympathy, Sophie sneered: "But they’re in Owen’s hands, you’ll never get them."
Silas Prescott sneered in contempt: "Is that so? Do you really believe Owen Paxton is loyal to you?"
Upon hearing this, Sophie looked incredulously at Owen: "He wouldn’t betray me; I’ve instilled hatred for the Prescott Family in him since childhood. He couldn’t possibly disobey."
"If he listened to you, he wouldn’t have sent me messages to attend this board meeting, nor would he have transferred all the shares you gave him to me. Ms. Sommers, you wanted your two sons to turn against each other, but neither fulfilled your wish. Aren’t you very disappointed?"
Sophie Sommers looked at Owen, puzzled: "Is what he said true?"
Owen Paxton smiled lightly with tears in his eyes: "You always claimed to be my mom, yet I never received any love from you. Instead, from my brother, I received not only financial support but also trust. We are both your children, yet you never loved us, rather you used us as pawns. Two similarly fated children, how could they listen to you and harm one another?
I’m an adult, capable of discerning right from wrong. I know who truly cares for me. The reason I listened to you, vying for the position, was to reclaim your shares and eliminate dissent within the Group. Mom, have you never considered that two unloved children might band together for warmth?"
Sophie Sommers was completely broken.
The lover she cherished sold her to Ethan for money, the son she trusted betrayed her and sided with her most hated son.
This result was beyond her wildest dreams.
She cried wildly like a madwoman, banging her head against the wall.
Silas Prescott instructed someone to quickly take her away.
In the conference room, only Silas Prescott and Owen Paxton remained, meeting each other’s gaze, eyes filled with unspeakable bitterness.
Owen called out hoarsely: "Brother, I’m sorry."
Silas Prescott firmly patted his shoulder a few times, smiled, and said: "The Group is yours now; I have important matters to attend to."
