Chapter 555: The Night Quest

Clyde could hear the footsteps long before they reached the alley. Slow and ven. Completely unhurried.

That was impossible for any normal survivor. Nobody walked like that in this city, especially not at night when the new spawns monsters prowled.

The sound stopped just outside the door. Then came three deliberate knocks.

"We have a quest for you." A smooth, composed voice followed.

Mina stiffened instantly, her hand flying to her daggers.

She crouched slightly, eyes narrowed toward the door.

Clyde glanced at her and said evenly, "Calm down. It’s alright."

Her brows furrowed. "How come it’s alright when someone knocks like that, in the middle of the night?"

"I told you we’d get a Night Quest before, remember? This is what I meant," Clyde replied, his tone steady, as if the situation was perfectly under control.

Something in his calmness bled into her. Mina exhaled slowly, the tension in her shoulders loosening.

"Alright," she murmured.

Clyde rose to his feet and gestured for her to follow.

Mina stood and moved with him to the door.

When it swung open a man stood there. Immaculately dressed in a black suit, a tie perfectly centered, dark sunglasses hiding his eyes despite the night.

His smile was polite, almost too polite.

"Good evening," the man said smoothly. "Would you like to take the Night Quest? The rewards will serve you well."

"Yes," Clyde answered without hesitation.

Mina simply gave a small nod.

The man inclined his head slightly, his smile not faltering.

And then, without any physical movement, a translucent window shimmered into existence before both Clyde and Mina’s eyes.

[Night Quest: Cull the Spawn]

Description: The Lunar Beast’s minions are growing in number. Their presence threatens the stability of the current world. You are tasked to eliminate them in significant quantities.

Objective: Defeat 50 Spawn of the Lunar Beast before dawn.

Time Limit: Until sunrise.

Rewards:

+500 Exp per 50 spawns killed,

Increased Reputation with The Night Watchers which will make them give you better Quest later.

The moment they read it, the quest details burned into their minds as if etched there.

The man in the suit gave a courteous bow. "Complete it before sunrise, and the rewards will be yours. Good hunting."

Then, as if he had never been there, he turned and vanished into the shadows of the street.

Clyde thought this was better than expected. Five hundred Exp for every fifty spawns meant that if they pushed themselves, they could stack the rewards and get more Exp before sunrise.

The more they killed, the stronger they’d get in one night.

Mina’s eyes brightened when she realized the same thing. She glanced at Clyde, a small grin tugging at her lips.

"This is just as good as you said," she said with a wide smile.

"I told you," Clyde replied with a small smile. "We should get ready. We don’t have much time. But this time, we can’t let ourselves be surrounded."

"Right." Mina nodded firmly, her grip on her daggers tightening.

They stepped out of the house and into the cold night air, the faint silver light of the moon filtering through gaps in the ruined buildings.

The streets were quieter here but the distant roars and skittering told them the spawns were never far.

Clyde led the way, keeping to the shadows and listening for the telltale scrape of claws against stone.

When he spotted a small cluster of three spawns ahead, he raised a hand to halt Mina.

They waited, letting the creatures wander just close enough before striking.

Mina dashed in first. Her daggers flashing as she cut through the first one’s throat in a single motion.

Clyde moved at the same time, spearing another through the chest before it could react.

The third spawns barely had time to snarl before Clyde’s follow up strike split its head open.

They melted back into the shadows before the sound could draw more.

The next hunt went the same way. This time four spawns near a collapsed wall.

Clyde flanked from the side while Mina darted in from the front, killing them quickly before the noise could spread.

No drawn-out fight, no reckless charges. Every kill was clean, silent, and deliberate.

It wasn’t as thrilling as carving through dozens at once but Clyde knew this was the right way to do it rather than let Mina tired herself and let something go wrong.

Every few minutes, another small group was killed, and their Exp percentage crept higher without the risk of being buried in the spawn’s claws and teeth.

From behind crumbled walls and shattered storefronts, survivors peeked out with wide eyes. Some clutched makeshift weapons and the others simply huddled in silence. Their breath misting in the cold night air.

They watched Clyde and Mina move like predators. Swift, precise, and utterly fearless.

Whispers spread among the hiding.

"They’re tearing through them like nothing."

"If we make it to morning, I’m asking them to join our group."

"Or we need to join them. Yes, we must do that so we can survive."

The pair ignored the stares. Every focus, every ounce of strength, was for the hunt.

Their kills mounted steadily. Forty-three... forty-seven... forty-nine... Then, in the shadow of a collapsed bridge, Clyde’s spear impaled through the last spawn’s neck, and the creature crumpled into dust.

A familiar presence approached. Silent footsteps, perfectly measured. It must be the man in the black suit emerged once more from the gloom, his polite smile unchanged.

"Fifty spawns before sunrise. Well done."

A soft chime rang in Clyde and Mina’s minds as the quest completion burned bright in their vision.

[+500 Exp]

[Reputation Increased: The Night Watchers]

Mina held her daggers in her hand and smiled.

"The reward is good," she murmured.

The man adjusted his tie slightly. "The Night Watchers thank you for your service."

But before he could step back into the dark, Clyde spoke.

"We’re not done. We’ll take the same quest again."

The man paused, tilting his head. "Again?"

"Yes," Clyde said firmly. "The night’s still long. We can take down more."

Mina grinned. "We will get more kills, which means more Exp."

The man studied them for a moment, then smiled faintly, as though amused. "Very well."

Another translucent window shimmered into being, the same quest glowing once more.

"Then, good hunting." He vanished into the shadows again.

Clyde glanced at Mina. "Round two. Let’s make it count."
