Tadashi held his breath, not daring to move an inch.

“Boy, you don’t know yet, do you? Before I worked as an appraiser, I was a forest ranger in the western mountain wilderness. I spent ten years working in that primitive forest. But then I ran into a tight spot, cut down two trees to sell, and got caught red-handed. I was fired and jailed for two years. So you see, you’re not going to escape out here, in the middle of nowhere.”

As Wang Defa walked around, he swung the steel pipe, sweeping the grass and bushes around him.

“Aren’t you coming out yet, boy?”

After sweeping the bushes where Tadashi was hiding, the steel pipe suddenly stopped, and Wang Defa slowly turned his head. His eyes locked with Tadashi’s. A malicious grin spread across Wang Defa’s face.

“Told you I’d find you, boy.”

“Oh no!” Tadashi instinctively rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the strike of the pipe.

But Wang Defa, as though he had anticipated Tadashi’s move, swept the steel pipe violently across the ground.

The tangled vines, shrubs, bushes, and weeds barely absorbed the force. If the blow had landed directly on Tadashi, it would have incapacitated him. Knowing this, Tadashi had no choice but to curl up and attempt to defend himself with his bare left arm.

“AH!”

The pain was instant, but Tadashi couldn’t even let out a long scream. He quickly rolled on the ground, trying to create some distance.

Wang Defa wasn’t in a rush to chase. In his eyes, Tadashi was essentially a turtle caught in a jar. There was no way he could escape.

“Why run? It’s not like I’m going to kill you. In fact, if you just tell me where that woman is, I’ll let you go. Why make this unpleasant for both of us?”

Tadashi clutched his arm which was paralyzed by the pain as he struggled to get back up onto his feet. He gritted his teeth, refusing to let out the humiliating pained cries.

He glared fiercely at Wang Defa, squeezing two words from through his clenched teeth—”Dream on.”

“Haha, excellent. You’re truly a loyal kid.” Rather than getting angry, Wang Defa laughed and clapped his hands. “How touching. No wonder that idiot Chen Xing wanted to save you.”

“Uncle…”

“But you see, that so-called loyalty of yours has condemned both of us instead. Do you really think you’re doing the right thing?”

“Condemned…?” Tadashi was confused.

“That uncle you’re talking about… he’s dead. I killed him.”

“What…?” Tadashi’s mind went blank instantly. His ears were ringing. “Thou art… telling the truth?”

“You don’t believe me?” Wang Defa waved the steel pipe in his hand, clearly stained with blood. “Either way, it’s done. It doesn’t matter now.”

Wang Defa suddenly pointed at himself. “But what about me? How are you going to make it up to me? I killed someone because of you!”

“Because… of me?”

“Yes. If it weren’t for that idiot Chen Xing letting you go, I wouldn’t have had to kill him, would I? I was going to go easy on you, but now… I’ve got no choice but to be ruthless.”

Wang Defa gripped the steel pipe, lowering his center of gravity like a baseball player preparing for a swing. With a powerful motion, he swung the pipe through the air, the force of it creating a sharp whistling sound as it cut through the air.

“You leave me with no choice. Since I can’t get any information out of you, I’ll have to bash your skull in with a solid blow like I did to Chen Xing.”

“You… a̲s̲s̲h̲o̲l̲e̲!” Tadashi’s eyes reddened with rage. He grabbed a stone from the ground and threw it at Wang Defa. “Isn’t that uncle your partner?!”

“Ha!” Since the throw was weak, Wang Defa easily knocked the stone away with the steel pipe. “Oh yeah, home run! Huh? What did you say? Partner?”

Wang Defa suddenly clutched his stomach and burst out laughing. “Partner? I don’t have a partner. I never thought of that guy as one. From the start, I just wanted to use him as free labor. Once I was done with him, I planned to toss him aside. Partner, huh? You think too highly of him. That chubby weakling was nothing more than a tool to me.”

“YOU!” Tadashi was enranged, clenching his teeth so hard that he nearly broke them as he glared at Wang Defa. He couldn’t just sit back and let this scum insult that uncle who, despite crying like a child in front of him, was a real man.

“Oooooooh, you’re pissed off now, huh? What are you gonna do, stone me to death?” Wang Defa mocked, making an exaggerated face.

“Come on, come on, try it. Stone me to death, I dare you.”

Tadashi clenched his fists but didn’t waste his energy on such a futile assault. He knew that he posed no real threat to Wang Defa as long as he was unarmed. His only option now was to escape… albeit reluctantly.

Is there really nothing else I can do except hold my head in my hands and flee in disgrace? Maybe… even escaping is just wishful thinking.

“Allow me to try then.”

A voice, as crisp as a lark, suddenly broke through the air. Both Wang Defa and Tadashi were startled before turning together toward the source of the voice.

Luna stood not far away, still wearing the same ill-fitting tracksuit.

Tadashi wasn’t sure when she had arrived or if she had been there all along, but Luna was holding a small pebble in her hand, her lips curling into a mischievous smirk as she looked at Wang Defa.

“You—” Wang Defa froze for a moment, his face quickly shifting to one of gleeful ecstasy. “You actually came over by yourself?”

“What? Are you not happy that I’ve personally delivered myself to your doorstep?”

“Happy? Of course, I am!” Wang Defa’s eyes were wild as he ogled Luna, whose beautiful face and good figure were still evident despite the unflattering sportswear. He let out a lecherous chuckle. “Since you’re so eager, why don’t we have a little fun later, pretty?”

“Sure, I’m bored anyway,” Luna replied playfully.

“Lady Luna!” Tadashi, however, turned pale, his voice laced with panic as he shouted at her, “Run now, don’t trust him!”

“Shut up, brat!” Wang Defa snapped.

Luna ignored Wang Defa’s outburst and smiled at him instead. “But before we do that, don’t you think we should finish the game we were just playing?” she asked.

“Game? What game?” Wang Defa blinked in confusion.

“What a forgetful man you are.” Luna raised the pebble in her hand, her voice gentle as she spoke. “Didn’t you just tell us to… stone you to death’?”

“That’s…” Wang Defa stood frozen for a moment, then looked down at the pebble in Luna’s hand. It was no bigger than a fingernail.

He opened his arms as if welcoming her embrace, laughing loudly as he said, “Haha since the beauty wants to play, I’m happy to oblige. Come on, use all your strength. Stone me, I promise I won’t dodge.”

“Are you really sure you want me to use my full strength?” Luna asked, her expression unreadable.

“Haha, of course! Don’t worry, use all your power!”

In that moment, Wang Defa seemed to have forgotten his age, acting more like a young energetic man in his twenties. He puffed his chest out, trying to impress Luna with his bravado.

“Come on, pretty. Hit me so hard that my head bleeds!”
