Book 6: Chapter 72: Obscene Materials

In the sudden silence, the monster girl holding swirling darkness within her looked at the stiff-faced captain with mild curiosity.

She made no effort to rush him for an answer. Instead, she turned around and casually ran her fingers across the sophisticated engravings on the cannon, as if deliberately giving Graybert time to come up with a convincing excuse.

Graybert gulped audibly, then wiped the cold sweat from his brow as he replied, “Of… course not.”

He forced out a smile that looked worse than a grimace.

“I’ll take you there now.”

With that, he started walking, though his pace was clearly slower than before.

The once-robust man, tempered by years of seafaring, was coughing as if he had suddenly caught a cold.

*Cough, cough cough, cough cough cough cough.*

At least the rhythm was consistent.

The corner of Lilith’s mouth curled upward in a faint arc, but her eyes held not the slightest trace of amusement.

Soon, the two arrived outside Graybert’s quarters.

“A-After you,” Graybert said as he motioned toward the door.

“Thanks.” Lilith nodded lightly before stepping inside.

Lit by the pale glow of a lumenstone, the room was revealed to be quite simple—barely different from the others on board.

It contained only a single bed, a small wooden table beside it, a wardrobe at the foot of the bed, and a large clay jar placed quietly in the corner.

The quilt lay in a heap, damp and musty. A faint moldy scent lingered in the air, and the coolness of the bedsheet suggested that no one had slept here in quite some time.

Above the bed hung a picture frame. Though the photo was faded, one could still make out the beaming face of a lively young girl, and beside her, a clean-shaven middle-aged man with an awkward, bashful smile.

On the small table, a partially completed sea chart lay spread open, crisscrossed with complex lines and scribbled calculations.

When Lilith opened the wardrobe, the musty smell grew stronger. Inside hung only a few dark outfits of the same style.

It had clearly not been opened for a while as brightly colored mushrooms had begun to sprout happily in the corners.

They were actually… thriving.

Lilith let out a quiet sigh of admiration, then shut the wardrobe as if she had seen nothing.

She turned her gaze to the one remaining object in the room that might be able to hide something.

The large clay jar.

“What’s this?” she asked curiously, walking toward it.

Even through the sealed lid, she could faintly catch the scent of something sweet.

“That’s…” Graybert scratched his head, looking sheepish. “Jam.”

“Jam?” Lilith blinked. “In a jar this big?”

Isn’t jam usually stored in small glass jars? Who the hell uses a giant clay jar for jam?

“Hehehe, it’s my kid… Mary. She heard people say jam prevents scurvy, so every time I came back, she’d make a big batch just for me. She actually bought this clay jar with her three months’ salary… said it could keep it from rotting.”

Graybert sighed helplessly. “But seriously, who can eat that much jam? I can never finish it. It kills me to throw it out, though… Honestly, this troubles me greatly.”

Lilith stared at him speechlessly.

*Troubles you? B̲u̲l̲l̲s̲h̲i̲t̲! Why do you have such a big smile on your wrinkled old face then?*

Too lazy to entertain his bragging, Lilith simply lifted the lid of the jar. A wave of sticky sweetness instantly filled the room. When she peeked inside, she found it was still two-thirds full.

*And… wait—why does it look so colorful?*

*Fruit jam… comes in that color?*

Lilith slowly turned to Graybert, horrified, but that b̲a̲s̲t̲a̲r̲d̲ was still beaming.

“Oh, that’s because Little Mary was worried I wasn’t getting enough nutrients. So she bought all kinds of fruit and mixed them into one jar. That’s why it’s so colorful!”

“I see…” Lilith calmly closed the lid. Still, even if one threw in every fruit from the entire continent, the jam shouldn’t be rainbow-colored.

*Should I tell him?*

She glanced at that grinning old mug…

*Forget it. He has eaten so much of it already. Maybe his body has long gotten used to it.*

“So… I’ve pretty much finished inspecting everything already,” she said, giving the room one last look to make sure she didn’t overlook anything.

“Uh-huh.” Graybert nodded eagerly. “Then since you’ve finished inspecting…”

“Don’t be in such a rush~” Lilith gave him a sly smile. “Isn’t there still one place left to inspect?”

“N-No…?” Graybert stiffened, but still forced a smile. “I know this ship like the back of my hand! It’s not that big. You’ve already looked through everything.”

“Is that so~? Are you sure about that?” Lilith hummed with faint amusement.

“P-positive…” Graybert dabbed cold sweat from his forehead.

“In that case… what’s this?”

“What are you talking about?”

Before Graybert could digest the question, there was sudden movement at the door.

He turned around instinctively—and his heart dropped.

Two pale-faced crew members were slowly lugging a massive crate into the room. Behind them stood another monster girl, smiling just as sweetly.

“T-That’s…”

Graybert blinked, but the second Lilith had vanished. The original Lilith now stood before the crate, studying it with interest.

“You gave the signal to have this moved, didn’t you? What’s in it that you don’t want me to see?”

She reached out and measured the crate. “At this size, surely you’re not hiding a person, are you?”

“N-no, of course not!” Graybert shook his head vigorously. “Why would I hide a person in there? What do you take me for—a murderer?”

“Then what’s inside?”

“I-It’s…” Graybert’s gaze darted. He broke into another cold sweat and couldn’t seem to form a coherent answer.

“Never mind. I’ll take a look myself.” Lilith placed a hand on the crate, but before opening it, she gave him one last chance.

“Captain Graybert, can I trust you?” she asked coldly.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but probably… yes?” he answered awkwardly.

“Well then… I hope so.”

Lilith’s expression gradually hardened. As she lifted the lid, she became the merciless monster she was.

*Come out, old friend. I know it’s you—*

The crate opened, and its contents were revealed to the world.

But it was not the Li Desheng that she had expected.

It was…

Books.

Many books.

Many… naughty books!

Lilith stared at the stack of explicit, criminally obscene material—so vile that not even censorship could spare its author from a death sentence.

Her calm facade fractured the moment she saw it.

She could barely keep the corner of her mouth from twitching as she gave Graybert a look of pure disbelief.

“This is what you were hiding from me?”

“Ahem…” Graybert’s weathered face flushed red. “Well, it’s that kind of stuff… If someone saw it, especially a young lady, well, even a thick-skinned old sailor like me, with skin thick enough to take a cannonball, would still be embarrassed.”

*…That actually makes sense. Damn it!*

*I hate that I don’t even have a comeback.*
