Book 6: Chapter 88: True Culprit

“Gerald, the Dragon Ancestor?” The Thoughtless Deity Lord’s eyes widened in disbelief.

Why would the Dragon Ancestor himself come to a place like this?

Then again, perhaps it wasn’t so strange. This was the ancestral homeland of the dragons. What truly shocked her was that the Dragon Queen had been waiting for Gerald.

Judging by the “enthusiastic” reception, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a heartwarming reunion between the long-lost kin.

“Regalis?!” The golden dragon, still pinned by the massive hand, let out a hoarse roar. “Why are you here?!”

“Is it so strange that I am?” The Dragon Queen rose from her throne, waving her crimson sleeve.

“This is the ancestral homeland of our kind, is it not? I am the Queen of Dragons, why shouldn’t I be here? Or have you spent so long pampered in your greenhouse that you’ve gone senile?”

“Shouldn’t you be—” Gerald was about to snap back, but caught sight of the Thoughtless Deity Lord and quickly changed his tune. “Thoughtless Deity Lord! Help me! Quick!”

The Thoughtless Deity Lord frowned. She had no idea why their reunion turned out this way.

They were the last of the dragons. Even if they had parted ways nine million years ago, there was no reason to start fighting like that.

No, this wasn’t even a fight. It was one-sided domination.

Despite being the progenitor of all dragons, the origin of their bloodline, Gerald was being effortlessly suppressed by his descendant.

The Thoughtless Deity Lord couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for him. But then, she remembered her duty. She couldn’t just stand by and let Gerald be humiliated.

“Now, now, Dragon Queen,” she said, stepping between them. “Let’s not act hastily. Can we not talk this out?”

She gestured toward Gerald. “Besides, aren’t both of you related? Shouldn’t your shared bloodline count for someth…”

The Dragon Queen narrowed her eyes at the Thoughtless Deity Lord and cut her off coldly, “Oh? You’re ordering me around now?”

“…You!” The Thoughtless Deity Lord’s expression that had just softened hardened again. Anger began burning in her chest intensely again.

“I would never presume to command the mighty Dragon Queen. But Gerald has contributed greatly to the Great World. He’s a guest whom the five great powers all hold in the highest regard. If I stand by while you humiliate him, I’ll be condemned by all.”

She continued, her voice rising. “Think carefully, Dragon Queen. Because of the Dragon Eater incident, you’ve already placed yourself at odds with the Great World. If you now turn on one of our most cherished friends, the world will not hesitate to label you its enemy!”

“Guest? Friend?” The Queen of Dragons ignored the threat entirely. Instead, her interest latched onto those two particular words. “You say Gerald is your guest and a friend to Great World. May I ask why?”

“Of course it’s because Gerald once saved the Great World. His heroism is etched into our history. His deeds are celebrated across every land. His statues outnumber those of any other heroes, all raised out of admiration!” the Thoughtless Deity Lord replied.

“Do you understand his stature in the Great World? Though unaffiliated with any faction, he’s recognized and revered by all!” she added.

A heavy silence ensued.

The Dragon Queen stared at the Thoughtless Deity Lord as if trying to make sense of her words.

After long pause, she said, “Saved the world? Gerald? Him?” 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

“That’s right.”

“A hero?”

“Yes.”

“And people built statues of him?”

“They did.”

“He’s revered by all?”

“Yes.”

“…You’re not lying to me, are you?” the Dragon Queen asked skeptically.

“Of course I’m lying. I’m just so bored and thought I’d waste my time making up nonsense to amuse you!” the Thoughtless Deity Lord replied sarcastically.

Then she growled, “Reconsider your action, Dragon Queen. If you hurt him now, there’ll be no going back. There will be no reconciliation between you and the Great World!”

“…Pfft.”

To the Thoughtless Deity Lord’s astonishment, the proud and arrogant Dragon Queen suddenly burst into uncontrollable laughter.

She laughed so hard her shoulders shook, and she looked nothing like her usual dignified self.

“Haha… So Gerald is now a hero who saved the world? What a ridiculous world this is. Or am I dreaming right now?”

“What’s so funny?!”

To the Thoughtless Deity Lord, her laughter was a cruel mockery of every hero who had died fighting the Dragon Eaters. It was as if she were trampling on their sacrifices and spitting on their glory.

She barked angrily, “Gerald discovered the Dragon Eaters’ weakness! Because of him, the Great World managed to forge the supreme artifact that finally defeated those creatures. That alone makes him our savior!”

“Ohhh… so that’s the story now. I see.” The Dragon Queen wiped tears of laughter from the corners of her eyes. And in that instant, she regained her dignity and composure.

She stared the Thoughtless Deity Lord down and asked coldly, “Have you wondered how exactly did Gerald discover the Dragon Eaters’ weakness?”

“Well…” the Thoughtless Deity Lord faltered. She had indeed never thought about that before.

“But what matters is the outcome, isn’t it?”

“Yes… the outcome is important.” The Dragon Queen stepped forward, her beautiful face turned frosty. It was almost as if she could chill the very air with her presence.

“But then tell me this…

Why did so many brave heroes die without ever discovering that weakness?

Why did I fail to uncover it, even after fighting the Dragon Eaters alone?

Why did the Great World’s brightest minds, who worked day and night, uncover nothing?

And yet he—Gerald—just happened to figure it out?”

“Maybe it’s coincidence?”

The Dragon Queen scoffed. “Sure, coincidences happen. But not to someone like Gerald.”

With a sneer of contempt, she continued, “Since you’re all so foolish and pitiful enough to be deceived by that wretched man, allow me to share just a sliver of the truth.”

“Can you guess why the Dragon Eaters picked invaded the Great World and why its first target was the dragons, who didn’t even dwell anywhere near it?” she asked.

“REGALIS!!”

The golden dragon, who had been silent for so long, suddenly let out a desperate roar and thrashed with all his might.

Golden light erupted from his immense form. Like a massive star radiating boundless heat and brilliance, it surged outward, engulfing everything in a purgatory of searing flames.

The sealing array, formed by countless dead stars to contain him, shuddered violently.

Unable to withstand the intensity of the golden flames and radiant light, the stars shattered and crumbled into cosmic dust.

But then…

“That’s because…”

With that majestic voice, all that surging light and heat suddenly ceased.

It was as if an invisible hand had gently flicked off the switch of a bulb.

In the deafening stillness, only the Dragon Queen’s cold, unwavering voice echoed through the void, delivering her judgment with finality.

“Dragon Ancestor Gerald is the true culprit behind the Dragon Eaters’ invasion of the Great World!”
